LED states for V1.x Small Cell devices

Overview

This topic describes the LED states on the V1.x Small Cell devices.

LED interpretation table when using the Iuh interface

The following table describes the possible states for each LED when the Small Cell is

using the Iuh interface to communicate with the Small Cell Gateway, that is,

BSR.enableIuh is set to true.

When BSR.enableIuh is set to true, the WAN LED follows a 2 step WAN connection

procedure and the WAN OK state is not used.

For Small Cells 2.4 onwards, backhaul congestion may be detected while the SCTP

association is established, and may occur during system auto-configuration. If this

happens, the system auto-configuration indication takes precedence.

Scenarios for Scenario descriptions

Phone/device: phone

has maximum

number of users

active

1. A 4-user Small Cell has three active RABs, and the Phone LED is

ON. A new user makes a call and a fourth RAB becomes active:

Phone LED BLINKS as long as four RABs are active.

2. A home user with 4-user Small Cell sees Phone LED is BLINKING

and attempts a call. The home user may or may not be given

service, depending on which features are activated, how they are

configured, and whether or not a local macro cell is available. If

they are not given service, they may infer that this is due to

capacity issues on the Small Cell.

Backhaul congestion1. Small Cell has detected backhaul impairments that may impact user

service : Phone LED BLINKS and System LED BLINKS.

2. A home user may infer that impairments affecting calls during this

indication may be due to congestion in the backhaul. Possible call

impairments include dropped calls and poor voice quality It may be

possible for the user to request other users of the local network to

reduce network usage whilst a call is made.

The backhaul congestion may potentially be detected whilst the

System is Initializing, in which case the System initializing LED

indication takes precedence.

The Phone LED provides no indication of number of active users

during backhaul congestion. The Small Cell ensures that the Phone

LED indication is correct when the backhaul congestion state

changes to uncongested.

Small Cell remote troubleshooting procedure

Purpose

This procedure describes how to troubleshoot Small Cells from the HDM.

Before you begin

• Wait at least 15 minutes after powering on the Small Cell.

• Ensure that a W-CDMA 2100 Mhz capable mobile device is available.

• Check that a DSL router (not a DSL modem) is installed.

• Check that the DSL line is working properly.

• Check that the Small Cell gateways are working properly.

• Check the Small Cell is activated on the HDM.

• Check the BSR.Lcell.operationalState state to determine whether the radio is

broadcasting. To do this, perform the following steps:

1. Click Manage from the Devices tab of the HDM GUI to manage the required

device

2. From the Queue Function tab, select Get Parameter Values, then find the

BSR.Lcell.operationalState

(Device.Services.BSR.1.Lcell.1.operationalState) parameter and

queue the function.

3. From the Device Data tab, check the value. Determine whether the value is

enabled.

• Check the parameters relating to location lock and/or national location lock. To do

this, perform the following steps:

1. Click Manage from the Devices tab of the HDM GUI to manage the required

device.

2. From the Queue Function tab, select Get Parameter Values, then find the

BSR.lmcMFail (Device.Services.BSR.1.lmcMFail) parameter and queue

the function.

3. From the Device Data tab, check the value. If the value returned is true, the

Small Cell radio is failing because of the location checks of the Small Cell.

BSR.administrativeState

(Device.Services.BSR.1.administrativeState) parameters and queue the

function.

3. Check the value from Device Data tab.

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

2

If Then Else

The Small Cell parameter

values are as follows:

State is enabled

• BSR.administra-

tiveState is

unlocked.

Continue. Go to “Steps to manage Small

Cell status from the HDM”

(p. 2-4).

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

3 Trigger a diagnostic test on the whole Small Cell equipment by setting

SetParameterValues (“diagnose=true”).

Get the result of the diagnostic in the diagnoseBSRAdditionalText variable, by

entering the following command: GetParameterValues(“diagnoseB-

SRAdditionalText”).

If Then Else

The diagnostic result shows

errors.

Follow up the Small Cell

diagnostic using the “Small

Small Cell diagnostic

Diagnostic result summary

After the end of the Small Cell diagnostics, the parameter BSR::diagnoseBSRAddi-

tionalText contains the result of the check.

You can read the result summary from the HDM via the following TR-069 command:

GetParameterValues(“diagnoseBSRAdditionalText”)

The diagnoseAdditionalText field is populated for a diagnose action as follows:

• executing <timestamp>

• pass <timestamp>

• fail <cause> <timestamp>

If <cause> has one of the following values:

• Diagnostic test incomplete to timeout of the diagnose action

• BSR not operational

• LCell not operational

Then send a technician to the site.

If <cause> has one of the following values:

• BSR Gateway not operational

• Voice gateway not operational

• Packet gateway not operational

• SCTP not operational

Then continue the troubleshooting procedure on the Small Cell gateways of the cluster.

BSR diagnostic data

The Small Cell also provides diagnostic data for the following processes and activities in

the Diagnostics Results file.

• Stack dumps of recent core files (/var/crash/)

• Log/trace data and call failure report information

• System event history data (/var/log/)

• CPU/memory error log (/var/log/)

• Detection of Small Cell tampering

Diagnostic results file

The diagnostic results are in a text file. This file is in a zipped file located on the Small

Cell in the folder: /var/log/diagnostics. It can be retrieved by using SFTP from the SCMS.
