Les Hommes... maintenant! (Men, now!)

Arfi's large ensemble excentric theater-concertThe most recent creation from “La Marmite Infernale” (ARFI’s grand orchestra), with the collaboration of stage director Jean-Paul Delore, C. Laval (wardrobe designer) and F. Besson (lighting). An ARFI / Th. Renaissance co-production.

They advance, they halt, they move around the stage. These are men. Sometimes they talk amongst themselves. These are the men from ARFI. Their characters are portrayed by their costumes. They are knights of their instruments. An eccentric army of ten thousand pins. They march, they come and go, moving back and forth and in all directions. As they enter they seize the spotlight, juggling their music amongst them. They’re kind, funny, unified, cruel, jealous, naive… they are Les Hommes… maintenant. A series of living pictures, sketches of a most musical life. Musicians that are so very human, musicians so very alive.

“ La Marmite’s music is just as beautiful here as anywhere else, skilfully mixing its sources through the original expression of precision in freedom, rhythms and sounds which are theirs alone and which today make them one of the most exciting big bands there is.” M. Gillot

Le Workshop de Lyon> « Half century tour - 2017» new project + guestsJ. Aussanaire (sax), J-P. Autin (sax, bass clarinet), J. Bolcato (bass, voice), C. Rollet (drums)

Since its foundation in 1967, the Workshop de Lyon has sung, invented, revisited, scrambled, thundered, destroyed, reconstructed, de-boned, innovated, explored... and improvised their mu-sic. Dozens of songs, hundreds of concerts, tours in all corners of the globe, musical encounters, long-lasting or episodic projects and records.

In 2017 - let’s bellow it from the rooftops as loud as we can - the Workshop de Lyon will buy us a round, with its founding members, occasional members, replacements, newcomers or guests and all potential participants to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this extraordinary group.

Segundo de Chomón’s Phantasmagorias.(Segundo de Chomón’s Phantasmagorias) Cine-concert

G. Villerd (sax, laptop, voix), J. Bolcato (b, perc, voice).

Everybody get ready for a trip back in time! Rediscover a forgotten craftsman of the fabulous adventure of cinematography… Rediscover the litt-le gems filmed by the Spanish director Segundo de Chomón. The soundtrack is created live by our two musicians who are both minstrels and singers. The phantasmagorical films of Segundo de Chomón lend themselves perfectly to the creation of a fresh, joyful and unbridled new soundtrack. This cine-concert is aimed at a broad audience (from age 5 upwards). Children can also be invited to participate, singing along with the musicians on four songs in the show.

Max, naufragé des rêves (Max, the shipwreck of dreams)Music and puppetryConception : D. Indeau, E. Brochard, J. Aussanaire. Mu-sic : J. Aussanaire and É. Brochard. Puppets : D. Indeau. Lights : C. Bertheau. Constructor : D. Perraud. Advisors : N. Durand et P. Henniquau.

Marionnettes puppeteered by their creator in plain sight… The story of this show is told through its shapes and forms. On stage, musi-cians use an original collection of instruments (cello and saxophone, but also spring reverbs and a metallophone…) They paint airs, translate emotions. After having met in 2013 at the Wang-fô show, the musicians from Arfi join forces with the Cie des Anges (Company of Angels) to create a totally hybrid show that lies somewhere between concert and puppet theatre.

Actuel Remix#02 : Heiner Goebbels RemixActuel Remix : X. Garcia, G. Villerd (laptops). B. Voarick (live video)

The duo Actuel Remix revisit contemporary music by remixing it with numbers from today’s biggest names in electronic music. After their first opus « #01 Metropolis » (for which the group remixed Iannis Xenakis’ music with that of Richie Hawtin over the film by Fritz Lang), today the band has launched into a remix of Heiner Goebbels’ music with that of Sven Vath, Ricardo Villalobos and others… For creation #02, the duo has teamed up with video maker Benoit Vaorick, with whom Arfi has already collaborated on projects blending live music and video.

Les Passants (The passers-by) Street TheatreA. Spirli, J-M François (actors, objects) The public is led on a meandering, musical walk by two experienced street-thespians, a stroll of rediscovery of the places we live in. The walks are organised in co-operation with the organisers of public events (festivals, parties…) and can take place in a variety of landscapes: suburbs, towns, in nature… These walks are eccentric, curious, flavoursome and musical! Participants are followed by an assistant with a cart full of unex-pected, recycled items, sonorous objects, whistles, blowers, operated one by one by our two performers and the spectators.

Dark PoeAn extraordinary story, a sensory experience.

G. Grenard (Trumpet & slide trumpet), C. Gibert (Saxophone, clarinet & bass clarinet), X. Garcia (Sampler, traitements, laptop), J-M. François (comedie), G. Keller (voice, pipe), N. Pellier (drum, percussion)

Plunged into total blackness, the public takes part in a musical reading of one of Poe’s short stories (Ligeia, 1838.) The very darkness of the text naturally implies a darkened atmosphere, but the goal here isn’t only to send a shiver down your spine. Without vision our other senses are heightened. The show comprises three sound sources: the reading of the text, roaming music and an electro-acoustic piece. The sounds may emerge from anywhere in the concert hall. During the show, an actor threads their way through the public, a mobile troublemaker that plays on the senses of hearing, touch and smell.

PSOE. Brochard (electric bass, laptop), X. Garcia (laptop), L. Guénin (drums, percussions, vocals)“ Whilst working on the “Meeting” series with Xavier Garcia for fifteen or so years, I wanted to collaborate with the drummer/singer/writer Loïc Guénin and return to a simple, non-artificial form of music, in the vein of Loïc’s texts. PSO’s music will promote sound and raw matter whilst advocating text and the meaning of words, it will surely be written, surely be improvised, leaving the freedom and space to go wherever the words might take us.” - Eric Brochard

Arfolia LibraA meeting between an Arfi quartet and a Renaissance music quartet.

Arfi: J. Aussanaire (sax), J-P. Autin (sax, bass clarinet), C. Gibert (sax, clarinet), X. Garcia (laptop). Aperto Libro: A. Ramage, L. Perret, T. Simas Freire, M. Bertaud (renaissance recorders, flutes, crumhorn, dulcian, cornet, bombard, bagpipes). Coproduction Arfi / CCR d’Ambronay.

“Here we find all the combined practical experience of the members of ARFI, able to combine their voices with those of the Consort Aperto Libro in a perfectly mastered balancing act which explores a dreamlike space, outside of time, outside the worlds and fashions of music. Precious, joyous, playful and fascinating music.” Thierry GIARD - Culture Jazz

MetropolisElectro movie concert (Full restored version, Fritz Lang, 1927)Actuel Remix : X. Garcia, G. Villerd (laptops).Actuel Remix worked with the sounds of Richie Hawtin, a key figure of the techno scene, and with the work of Iannis Xenakis, one of the musical pioneers of the 20th century. The rich modernity and the raw power of the ‘Xenakis material’ admirably serves the expressionist style of the film. The rhythmically pulsating and pure world of Richie Hawtin is the ‘motor’, the vital pulse and musical framework of this concert film.

Les Incendiaires (The Arsonists)

O. Bost (tb), E. Vagnon (sax), G. Grenard (trump).

“Expressive soloists, jubilant polyphony, conta-gious warmth and madness, you’ll find it all here. Although jazz (in the Mingus-Carla Bley style and more) has clearly played an influential role in the development of this band, their music also looks elsewhere, above and beyond, farther afield, down musical convergence lines that one could follow eternally if only one could see that far.” X. Prévost (Dernière Nouvelles du Jazz)

Les Raisins de la déraison (The Grapes of nonsense)Cine-concert on a docu-drama about French vineyards. J. Aussanaire (sax), E. Brochard (bass), C. Gibert (sax, clarinet).

Jacques Arnould, president of the “Amis du vin” (Friends of Wine) club welcomes Saül Crockett, president of the “Ligue du régime sec” (The league of teetotallers). After a meal, with wine for some and water for others, they undertake a voyage through the French vineyards.

ChangFilm of M.C. Cooper & E. B. Schoedsack (1927).Baron Samedi Percussion : M. Boiton, C. Rollet (percs), guest :J-L Peilhon (clarinet, harmonica).Between gripping adventure film and great documentary,“Chang” was shot through a 3 year long journey in the Thai jungle. In this natural state, every day is a struggle for life, a deep violence meets an extreme fragility.

Cinérir’ArfiWorkshop de Lyon with shorts films of Keaton, Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy. J. Aussanaire (sax), J-P. Autin (sax, bass clarinet), J. Bolcato (bass, voice), C. Rollet (drums)This time, Arfi’s choice has fallen on some famous shorts films from the Golden Age of burlesque. With its colourful palette, the Workshop de Lyon illustrates an hour-long CineFun-concert.

M. Méliès & Géo SmileVideo-concert with the films of G. MélièsO. Bost (tb), E. Vagnon (sax), G. Grenard (trump), D. Grange (actor, lights), J. Lopez (live video).Coming from a background in show business and magic, Méliès created the first special effects in the history of cinema. This video-concert is a presentation of his magical, sometimes naive world. The music created here cannot be reduced to a simple act of diffusion. It is, in addition to the screening of his films, an interactive and staged form which thus brings new life to the works of the director.

Musicians in collectifProfessional musicians Association since its foundation in 1977, Arfi is one of the eldest French collective, maybe European, of jazz and improvised music. Its longevity can be explained by the musicians character, all composers and improvisers, and most of all by the quality of their relationship, based on a common passion:

Research, constantly boosted, for new energies to build music (modelling sounds, shapes, overcoming chance…), to open their mind to other arts (cinema, dance, theatre, literature, visual arts, cuisine, photography…), and other fields of music: traditional (South Africa, Brazil, Ukraine…), popular (brass bands, film music…), contemporary (European improvi-sers and composers, electronica…)

… for an Imaginary Folklore. They state, despite a so-called compulsory modernity, that they defend « popular » music (at least those that let imagine something), a difficult yet passionate goal. They rely on diversity and cohesion, anar-chy and discipline, doubt and confidence. Many contradictions that one can’t sew up without a strong sense of collective.
