Alan Zweibel Making Virtual Visit to JCCComedy Writer Alan

Zweibel will be making a free virtual visit to the Louis S. Wolk JCC of Greater Rochester on Thursday, May 21st in support of his recent-ly published memoir LAUGH LINES: My Life Helping Funny People Be Funnier (Abrams Press).

Alan Zweibel start-ed his comedy career selling jokes for seven dollars apiece to the last of the Borscht Belt stand-ups. Then one night, despite bomb-ing on stage, he caught the attention of Lorne Michaels and became one of the first writers at Saturday Night Live, where he penned clas-sic material for Gilda Radner, John Belushi, and all of the original Not Ready for Prime Time Players. From SNL, he went on to have a hand in numerous landmark series, from It’s Garry Shan-dling’s Show to Curb Your En-thusiasm.

A lan Zweibel’s tender, funny memoir, LAUGH LINES, takes readers through his long career in the comedy-writ-

ing business and charts the story and changes in what made America laugh over the decades. From when the Catskil ls were a breeding ground for talented comedians through the era of vanguard

New York City comedy clubs that spawned a new wave of original voices, Zweibel covers comedy variety televi-sion, prestige cable, the Broadway stage, and the streaming world today.

Throughout the pages of LAUGH LINES Zwei-bel weaves together his own stories and inter-views with his friends and contemporaries in-cluding Larry David, Richard Lewis, Er ic Idle, Mike Birbiglia, Sarah Silverman, Judd Apatow, Susie Ess-man, Dave Barry, Rob Reiner, and more. The book also features a cha rming foreword from his friend of for-ty-five years Billy Crys-

tal, with whom he cowrote and coproduced the upcom-ing film Here Today that stars Crystal and Tiffany Haddish.

LAUGH LINES is a warm-hearted cultural memoir of American comedy. b

Is Israel Asking for Trouble With Annexation Plan?

by JONATHAN S. TOBIN(JNS) — Just how far can

Israel go to assert its rights over disputed territory with-out doing genuine harm to its vital interests? That’s a debate that has divided Israelis since June 1967 when in the course of a defensive war it came into possession of the lands of what the Kingdom of Jordan called the West Bank, and Jewish tra-dition calls Judea and Samaria.

The arguments about wheth-er Israel should have created Jewish communities in both the West Bank and the parts of Je-rusalem that were illegally oc-cupied by Jordan between 1948 and 1967 are now moot. The Jewish state’s enemies don’t recognize the historical, reli-gious and legal arguments that Israel rightly points to as allow-ing Jews to settle in the heart of its ancient homeland. But the Palestinians have repeatedly rejected such offers, including those that would have given them an independent state pro-vided that they were willing to end their century-long war on Zionism. Had they accepted any one of them over the course of the last 20 years, discussion about the settlements would not even be on the table.

So in the absence of a Pales-tinian desire to recognize the legitimacy of a Jewish state, no matter where its borders are drawn, Israel has three choices.

It can repeat Ariel Sharon’s 2005 disastrous experiment in Gaza, where he withdrew every soldier, settler and settlement, and pull back as an unsympa-thetic international communi-ty demands to the 1967 lines and let the Palestinians create whatever kind of lethal terrorist state they wanted in the West Bank and reap the bloody con-sequences of such folly.

The second option is to ac-cept the status quo and wait, as Israel has been for the last 50 years, for the Palestinians to come to their senses and negoti-ate an end to the conflict. That’s the policy that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has followed until now as he tried to manage a conflict that cannot be solved, though doing so hasn’t won him applause from his country’s critics.

The third option is for Israel to annex some, most or even all of the settlements by applying Israeli law in the territories as laid out in the Trump admin-istration’s peace plan unveiled earlier this year.

For supporters of the settle-ments, the need to act now – while the most pro-Israel ad-ministration in history is still in office – is imperative. If Is-rael waits, a possible change in power in Washington next

January will end a historical opportunity to put facts on the ground that, like every other achievement in Zionist history, will endure whether the Jewish state’s foes like it or not.

That’s a prospect that is op-posed by both those who still hold onto the failed “land for peace” formula in which the overwhelming majority of Is-raelis no longer believe because of Palestinian rejectionism and terror.

This week, however, a sig-nificant conservative voice has been added to those urging cau-tion on Israel’s government. In a surprising op-ed published by The New York Times, Dan-iel Pipes, the president of the Middle East Forum, has laid out what he considers to be six good reasons for Israel to hold off on extending its law to the areas where settlements exist.

Pipes is an eminent schol-ar and an important pro-Isra-el voice, so he cannot be ac-cused of seeking to undermine or harm the Jewish state. But though his arguments should be taken seriously, they aren’t persuasive.

The first point Pipes makes is that annexation may infuriate President Donald Trump if it’s is not done in the context of his “Peace to Prosperity” plan, which calls for such a step to be taken only as part of a negotia-tion in which a Palestinian state would be created. But as David Friedman, America’s ambassa-dor to Israel, has stated in a re-cent interview in Israel Hayom, Trump is on board with Net-anyahu’s plans, so there seems no chance of the presidential tantrum Pipes fears.

Second, Pipes says that a move on the settlements will alienate and weaken the di-minishing number of friends Israel has in the Democratic Party and Europe. There is some truth to this since both Democrats and Europeans are infuriated by the idea of Isra-el acting in such a way as to render even a theoretical two-state solution impossible. It’s also true that Israel should do what it can to strengthen those Democrats and Europeans who remain supporters.

But it’s incorrect that im-plementing this aspect of the Trump plan will make a two-state deal impossible. More-over, the idea that refraining from annexation will alter the anti-Israel drift on the left is a delusion. The Palestinians can have a state, but Trump’s scheme is right to signal to them that it cannot mean a full Israeli retreat to the suicidal 1967 lines. Those who claim to be Israel’s friends need to also acknowledge this truth.

The third argument is that annexation will end the grow-ing cooperation between Israel and Arab states that look to it as a tacit ally against Iran. Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Egypt may oppose annexation. But they didn’t like Trump’s rec-ognition of Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem and the Golan Heights either, and it didn’t stop them from pursuing policies towards Israel that benefited them. The Arab world is no longer interested in enabling Palestinian intransigence, and measures that make it clear to the Palestinian Authority and Hamas that the cost of their

refusal to negotiate for peace is going up isn’t likely to cause the Arab states to stop dealing with Israel.

Fourth, Pipes claims that an-nexation will infuriate the Pal-estinians and destabilize Jor-dan, the West Bank and Gaza, leading to carnage that will cost Israel dearly. However, the Palestinians have shown little appetite for another self-de-structive intifada that would, as in the past, cost them far more than it would Israel. More-over, the implementation of the Trump plan would, like the US gesture on Jerusalem, not affect Palestinian lives much. And neither the P.A. nor Hamas want to risk losing everything they have to gain nothing in return.

Fifth, Pipes says annexation will alienate the Israeli left, causing it to abandon Zionism and the country. The problem with this argument is that the Israeli left has been largely de-stroyed as a political force by Palestinian intransigence with few who believe in the idea that there is a viable partner for peace. The overwhelm-ing majority of Israelis have rejected more concessions to the Palestinians until they are ready to make peace. The huge majority in the new Knesset in favor of annexation would have been unimaginable 20 years ago. Most Israelis remember the fatal consequences of Oslo and the Gaza withdrawal, and have drawn appropriate conclusions.

Sixth, Pipes puts forth that extending sovereignty over the settlements will create more Arab citizens of Israeli, there-by causing more demographic

issues for the Jewish state. But the joint Israeli-American com-mittees drawing up the maps for annexation are minimiz-ing this problem. While one can argue that the borders they draw will be unmanageable, the plan will not create the problem he’s worried about.

The best argument for an-nexation is that it actually fits in with the clever theory of the conflict that Pipes and the MEF has championed in recent years. Anything that signals to the Palestinians that it’s time for them to give up their fan-tasies of destroying the Jew-ish state and acknowledging its “victory” is a good idea. Rather than a “self-indulgence that will bolster the Palestinian cause,” the move on the settle-ments will make it clear to the Palestinians that time is not on their side. Extending Israeli law into the settlements with the support of the United States tells Palestinians that their dreams of a return to the 1967 lines, like their fantasies about destroying Israel altogether, is never going to happen.

Just as the warnings about Trump’s Jerusalem move burn-ing down the Middle East were false, so, too, are predictions of post-annexation doom. Friends of Israel need to reject Pipes’s advice about joining with ill-in-tentioned Obama-administra-tion alumni and BDS supporters to try to deter Israel from act-ing to assert its rights. Instead, they should do as the Trump administration appears to be doing – listening to the Israeli people and their elected repre-sentatives, and supporting their decisions. b

Report: PA Is Eradicating A Hasmonean-Era

Fortress in Samaria

(JNS) — The Palestinian Au-thority, taking advantage of the absence of Civil Administration inspectors during the coronavi-rus shutdown, is consolidating its takeover of “Tel Aroma,” a Hasmonean fortress in Samaria, according to Israeli NGO Rega-vim.

The NGO, which according to its website aims to “ensure responsible, legal, accountable and environmentally friendly use of Israel’s national lands and the return of the rule of law to all areas and aspects of the land and its preservation,” reported that on Sunday a fleet of heavy engineering tools from the P.A. and the Beta Village Council arrived at Tel Aroma and paved a road leading to-ward the remains of the for-tress.

Situated on a commanding ridge controlling the passage between the Jordan Valley and the heart of Samaria, the Tel Aroma Fortress is the north-ernmost of eight fortresses es-tablished by the Hasmonean Kingdom to protect Israel’s east-ern border.

In recent months, the P.A. has been making concerted efforts and investing consid-erable resources to take over the site, installing generators and perimeter lighting, erecting tents alongside a huge flagpost platform, and manning them around the clock. Senior P.A. and Beta Municipality officials recently held a ceremony at which the fortress was declared a “Palestinian Heritage Site,” a claim that purportedly affords them the “right” to carry out the work, that according to Re-

gavim has caused the destruc-tion of the fortress wall and reservoirs.

This is the culmination of a year-long process of ongo-ing destruction, according to members of “Preserving the Eternal,” a non-profit project of the Regavim Movement that works in cooperation with the Shomron Regional Council’s Infrastructure Department to preserve historic and archaeo-logical sites in Judea and Sa-maria.

Samaria Regional Council head Yossi Dagan assessed the destruction of the site, saying: “Enforcement authorities must give this matter the attention it deserves; they have a responsi-bility to live up to, this is their job and we expect them to do it. This systematic destruction of Jewish heritage sites through-out Judea and Samaria can-not continue. We demand that they put an immediate stop to the ongoing destruction of Tel Aroma; we call upon the rele-vant authorities to take action without delay.”

Eitan Melet, field coordina-tor for the Preserving the Eter-nal Project, who documented the recent roadwork and de-struction at the site, called on Israeli Defense Minister Naftali Bennett to intervene immediately: “Minister of De-fense Bennett, you have left a significant imprint on the Ministry of Defense in a short period of time. Now is the time to establish the legacy of your tenure — a legacy that will prove that the State of Israel protects its eternal birthright in the Land of Israel.” b

Jewish Group, Rabbis Decry Biden’s Call To Restore US Funding to Palestinians

(JNS) — A prominent pro-Is-rael organization and a rabbini-cal group have criticized former vice president and presumptive 2020 Democratic presidential nominee and former Vice Pres-ident Joe Biden’s proposal to re-sume funding to the Palestinian Authority, arguing that it may violate U.S. law.

“Money is fungible. Biden’s stated intention to resume send-ing U.S. tax dollars to the P.A. will enable the P.A. to finance terrorism, and the murder and maiming of more innocent Jews and Americans,” stated ZOA national president Morton Klein and ZOA chair Mark Levenson.

ZOA noted that Biden’s pro-posals would be “partially il-

legal” under the Taylor Force Act, which passed in Congress in 2018 and requires the end of the Palestinian Authority’s “pay to slay” program of financially rewarding terrorists or their families.

“It is utterly immoral to fund the P.A. while it continues to incite hatred and terror; glorify Jews killers in the media; and names P.A. schools, streets, government buildings, public squares and sports teams in honor of terrorists,” said Klein and Levenson.

B iden to ld t he J ewish Telegraphic Agency last week that he would “reopen the U.S. consulate in East[ern] Jerusa-lem, find a way to reopen the

PLO’s diplomatic mission in Washington, and resume the decades-long economic and se-curity assistance efforts to the Palestinians that the Trump administration stopped.”

“Every American should be outraged,” said Rabbi Dov Fischer, Western regional vice president of the Coalition for Jewish Values, a group that claims to represent more than 1,500 traditional rabbis. “Joe Biden has just said he would break U.S. law to do something which is also, of course, mor-ally repugnant — to reinvolve the American taxpayer in in-centivizing terrorism against innocent Americans like Taylor Force and others.” b

entities in the west allows them a way of securing financial as-sistance that they could not receive any other way,” the re-port states.

In the past two years, the Shin Bet security agency has exposed a number of incidents in which Hamas took control of money belonging to aid orga-nizations that are active in the Gaza Strip, and in some cases used them for military purpos-es against Israel.

One notable example was a case of European donations that went to fund terrorists involved in the murder of Rina Schnerbin the summer of 2019. Samar Arbid, head of the cell that killed Schnerb, 17, and wounded her broth-er in an attack at the Danny Spring in Samaria, played a key role in an organization

named Addameer, which is defined as “active in human rights.”

Other member of the same cells earned a living from Eu-ropean government donations to “civil society groups.”

Last Thursday, Israel repri-manded Emmanuel Joffre, head of an EU delegation to Israel, for the announcement that the funding would continue.

R ina Schnerb’s father, Eitan, is now joining the calls to block EU funding from reaching terrorists. In a pub-lic appeal to the Europeans, Schnerb wrote, “I was amazed to discover that Arbid was a member of the ‘human rights group’ Addameer. How can it be that people who sancti-fy death are active in human rights groups? How can it be that for years, they have been

receiving millions of Euros in aid from European nations?”

“I have no doubt that Euro-pean countries do not support terrorism and the murder of innocent people. However, they certainly understand that the links between Palestinian civil groups and terrorist organi-zations is a reality that must be condemned. I urge you: Do not turn a blind eye. Do not allow yourselves to be duped. Do not lend a hand, a platform, or funding to these organiza-tions,” Schnerb wrote.

Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan added that “The EU has given in to the Pales-tinian steamroller of pressure. Millions of Euros that went to Addameer show the real threat posed by the EU decision. This is a dangerous precedent.” b

Ambassador Slams ‘New York Times’ For ‘Libel’ Against the Jewish State

by YONI HERSCHIsraeli Ambassador

to the United States Ron Dermer leveled scathing cr it ic ism at The New York Times on Friday over an article pointing out that the Israel Defense Forces’ re-search and develop-ment efforts, which have proven crucial i n I s rae l’s bat t le against the corona-virus, are predomi-nately dedicated to devising ways to counter the Jewish state’s enemies.

The article, “Israeli Army’s Idea Lab Aims at a New Target: Saving Lives,” which was pub-lished on Thursday, states that “The Israeli Defense Ministry’s research-and-development arm is best known for pioneering cutting-edge ways to kill peo-ple and blow things up, with

stealth tanks and sniper drones among its more lethal recent projects.”

Ambassador Ron Dermer slammed the newspaper, tweeting, “The New York Times, which buried the Holocaust, Is best known for pioneering ways to libel and demonize the Jewish State. Now it is doing the same.”

The article also out-raged some pro-Israel advocates, the Forward reported.

A me r i c a n Je w-ish Committee CEO David Harris called the phrasing “vile,” saying it “should read: Israeli Defense Minis-try’s research-and-de-velopment arm is best known for pioneering cutting-edge ways to defend Israel since 1948 from annihila-tion by state/non-state

actors.” Almog Elijis, the spokeswom-

an for Israel’s consulate in New York, called out the New York Times “for their shameful twist-ing of reality.”

tract with Israeli cable-televi-sion company HOT, giving it the ability to preach gospel to more than 700,000 Israeli households. The deal has caused an uproar in Israel, with many calling for the terms of the deal to be in-vestigated and for the channel to be taken off the air.

While this is not the first at-tempt or even the first Chris-tian evangelical station that is broadcast on cable TV in Israel — Daystar and Middle East TV both broadcast in Israel — it rep-resents the first missionizing pro-gram in Hebrew on cable TV. The Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Council said it was conducting an investigation to determine whether “Shelanu” had violated the terms of its license, which prohibits any programming that wields “undue influence” on viewers. This would include proselytizing.

Avi Bell, a member of the Fac-ulty of Law at Bar-Ilan University in Ramat Gan and the University of San Diego School of Law, as well as a senior fellow at the Ko-helet Policy Forum, told JNS that while it is legal to missionize in Israel, “it is not legal to offer ma-terial benefits in order to induce someone to convert.”

According to an article in Is-raeli daily Haaretz, Asher Biton, chairman of the Cable and Sat-ellite Broadcasting Council that regulates cable providers, includ-ing HOT, said, “According to our regulations, it is fine to broadcast religious programming, but it is forbidden to broadcast content that has the potential to influence viewers in an undue fashion, and most certainly young and impres-sionable viewers.”

So while it’s legal to missionize in Israel (though not to minors), it is possible that G–D TV is vio-lating the terms of its broadcast-ing license.

Communications Minister Dudi Amsalem was approached about this issue and he said he would “not allow any missionary channel to operate in the State of Israel at any time and in any situation.”

“As soon as I heard about the incident, I asked the council’s chairman to launch a compre-hensive investigation to deter-mine that no channel is violating the terms of its license, and if indeed this channel is engaged in missionary activities, it will be taken down immediately,”

he said.In a video message announc-

ing the launch on his organiza-tion’s website, G–D TV CEO Ward Simpson said, “G–D TV has been given government permission to broadcast the gospel of Jesus Christ — Yeshua the Messiah — in Israel on cable TV in the Hebrew language. Never before, as far as we know in the history of the world, has this ever been done.”

‘Aggressive, In-Your-Face Marketing’

One of the main beliefs of Christian thought for centuries has been the concept of “Re-placement Theology” or “Su-persessionism,” which says that G–d’s blessing to Abraham was transferred from the Jews to the Christians. Adherents of replace-ment theology believe that the Jews are no longer G–d’s chosen people, and that G–d has now chosen the church.

The other belief held by Chris-tians is that the Jews are respon-sible for the death of Jesus. It is this belief that tragically led to so many pogroms and Jewish deaths over the centuries.

Laurie Cardoza-Moore, founder of Proclaiming Justice to the Na-tions and host of the award-win-ning evangelical Christian televi-sion program “Focus on Israel,” has called on the Israeli govern-ment to ban G–D TV from broad-casting programs focused on con-verting Jews to Christianity.

“It is interesting that G–D TV is doing this at this time because we are witnessing a rise in global anti-Semitism,” she told JNS. “In-stead of trying to convert Jews to Christianity, G–D TV should be using its platform to teach Chris-tians about their biblical respon-sibility to stand with Israel and with our Jewish brethren against this insidious lie.”

Bell said he suspects that the statements G–D TV made in the paperwork “are inconsistent with the statements they are making in the U.S. to their donors. If that is the case, not only should their license be revoked, I think there are grounds for criminal action on grounds of fraud.”

“It’s not just missionizing and preaching, but rather doing so fairly aggressively,” he added. “They have these clips they show their donors about the so-called Messianic Jews who harass indi-viduals in the streets of Jerusa-

lem to believe in Jesus. It’s not meant to be merely persuasive. It’s meant to be aggressive, in-your-face marketing.”

‘Missionizing Is in the DNA of Christianity and Islam’

Jeffrey Woolf, of Bar-Ilan Uni-versity’s Naftal-Yaffe Department of Talmud, told JNS that for at least the past 100 years in Israel there was “a large amount of Christian missionary work being carried out in Jewish communi-ties.”

But can a TV program such as “Shelanu” really succeed in pull-ing Jews away from the fold and into the Christian world?

Woolf expressed a strong be-lief that this could be the case. “Given the very serious degree of lack of knowledge in the Jewish community about this subject, there is what to be concerned about,” he said.

For Woolf, the main problem with the missionizing “Shelanu” channel is that it “takes advan-tage of the failure of the Israeli educational system in terms of instilling fundamental Jewish knowledge and historical aware-ness.”

Woolf blames, at least partially, that system for failing to educate Jewish youth and allowing them to become vulnerable to outside influence.

“Missionizing is in the DNA of Christianity and Islam,” he added. “They believe they have the only way to salvation. But from the Jewish point of view, it goes into our part of DNA that for 1,500 years has been subject to missionary pressure to try to get Jews to abandon Judaism.”

“The Jewish historical expe-rience for centuries has been rivers of blood after Christians attacked Jewish communities,” he pointed out. “Anyone with Jewish historical awareness will take umbrage at this attempt to preach to Israelis.”

Cardoza-Moore called Simp-son’s response to critics that he has no intention of converting Jews “misleading.”

“Unfortunately, Christian his-tory is replete with examples of Christians forcing their doctrinal views on Jews; either through torture or with a disingenuous smile,” she said.

What G–D TV is doing, she said, “is disingenuous, disrespect-ful, and it is unacceptable.” b

Iranian Top Official Lambastes US Government, as Currency Plunges Further

(JNS) — Not for the first time, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani criticized the United States on Wednesday for the assassination of Iranian general Quds Force Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani back in January and also took the opportunity to call America a “terrorist” country.

“The worst and most evil gov-ernment is now ruling the U.S.

Which government do you know that assassinates our military commander while on a mission,” said Rouhani during a cabinet meeting, Iran’s Fars News Agen-cy reported.

“The U.S. has always been terrorist, but to this extent is unprecedented,” he said, going on to claim that Washington was blocking medicine to the coun-

try as part of its ongoing sanc-tions on oil and other commod-ities. Iran is one of the worst-hit countries by the coronavirus.

Separately, the Iranian rial — now toman — hit its lowest rate against the dollar since 2018 on the unofficial market on Tuesday as U.S. sanctions have badly damaged the economy, accord-ing to a Reuters report. b

EFRAT, Israel — “And you shall count for yourselves seven cycles of Sabbatical years, seven years, seven times… forty-nine years… you shall sanctify the fif-tieth year and proclaim freedom throughout the land for all its inhabitants; it shall be the Jubi-lee year for you.” (Lev. 25:8-10)

This commandment to count seven cycles of Sabbatical years leading up to the 50th Jubilee year of proclaiming freedom throughout the land, is clear-ly reminiscent of the biblical commands we read last week (Parshat Emor): “Count for yourselves [from the day of your bringing the barley ‘omer wave offering] seven complete weeks… you shall count fifty days...” from the day after our exodus from Egypt until the Festival of the first fruits (bik-kurim), the festival commem-orating the Revelation of G–d’s Torah at Sinai (Lev. 23:15-17).

What is the significance of this striking parallelism be-tween the counting of the seven weeks between Passover and Shavuot and the counting of the seven sabbatical years leading up to the Jubilee year? What is the true message behind the daily count of sefirat ha’omer, the period which we are current-ly marking?

There are three words which express the concept of freedom: hofesh, dror and herut. Hofesh appears in the Book of Exodus

(21:2) in the context of the He-brew slave leaving the home-stead of his owner; at the end of his sixth year of employ he becomes (hofshi hinam), “com-pletely free,” without any obli-gation whatsoever to his former master.

The second word, dror, has just been cited in our present reading of Behar, in which “free-dom” (dror) is to be proclaimed throughout the land on the ad-vent of the Jubilee year.

But the Festival of Passover, which celebrates our exodus from Egyptian servitude, is re-ferred to by our Sages as zman herutenu, the time of our herut — a non-biblical word with Ar-amaic roots that connotes free-dom. Why do our Sages pass over the two biblical Hebrew words hofesh and dror in de-scribing our Festival of Freedom in favor of herut?

In his i l luminating study Escape from Freedom, the phi-losopher and political theorist Erich Fromm (1900-1980) dis-tinguishes between freedom from something and freedom for something. The former — the mere ridding oneself of duties and obligations — will, at best, produce a monotonous existence of boredom, aimlessness, and sometimes even depression; at worst, it will lead to alcohol and drug addiction, wild licentious-ness and even criminal acts of depravity. Many societies would

rather succumb to a totalitarian regime of enslavement rather than risk the challenges of the responsibility of freedom.

It is from this vantage point that Viktor Frankl (1905-1997), author of From Death-Camp to Existentialism and founder of the branch of psychoanalysis which he calls “logotherapy,” insists that the most essential human drive is not a search for pleasure, as Freud would maintain, or a search for power, as Adler and Jung suggest. Rather, it is the search for meaning, the human need to carve out a life of signif-icance and worthwhile purpose. Freedom from enslavement must be linked indelibly with the be-lief of the individual that he/she is empowered to forge for him/herself a life dedicated to an im-portant goal and purpose.

Hence, our Bible begins with the creation of the world, positing that every human being is creat-ed “in the image of G–d,” with a portion of the Lord on High with-in the very essence of his/her being,” so that he/she becomes commanded (and thereby em-powered) to “develop the earth and preserve it,” to “perfect our imperfect world in the Kingship of the Divine” (Gen. 1:27; 2:7, 15 and the Aleinu prayer).

By reliving G–d’s primordi-al week of creation during our human weekly cycle of “work-ing the world” for six days and resting in G–d’s presence on the

seventh, we hopefully rekindle our task to perfect the world as G–d’s partners every single week! And hofesh in this context is our freedom of choice not to do whatever we wish but rather to choose good over evil, G–d over Satan, creation over de-struction, eternal life in the gen-erations we fostered, dedicated to G–dliness over instant death after an existence spent in futile pursuit of vanity and emptiness.

The word dror is used to ex-press the period of human per-fection, redemption (ge’ula), de-scribed in our Jubilee year, when all slaves will be freed, when everyone’s land will provide suf-ficient produce for all, when all debts will be rescinded, when everyone will be returned to their ancestral homestead, when all the needy of the world will be sustained by their communities. Dror is the purpose for which Is-rael and humanity was created; the society and world which Is-rael and humanity must recreate in G–d’s loving partners.

And do our Sages refer to the time of our liberation from Egyp-tian enslavement as herut, which derives from the Hebrew ahra-yut, responsibility: the path-way toward the final accomplishment of universal dror, the responsi-bility of freedom for, the respon-sibility of accepting the formi-dable task of partnership with the Divine, the responsibility of protecting our siblings (ahim)

unfrt Hof,, the responsibility of protecting every stranger (aher) who is also our sibling under G–d, the responsibility of going first and saying “aharai” (after me), and the responsibility of bringing the world to its aharit hayamim, the final stage of re-demption, the Messianic Age.

And so, as soon as we became free, we started to count; only for a free person does every day count, only for a free person is every day fraught with in-finite possibilities of productivity and meaning. We count until we receive our Torah, which is our blueprint for the creation of a perfected world. And you will note that although the Bible commands that we count 50 days — we stop at 49. That is also why the Festival is called Shavuot — because we are still a work-in-progress, we have not yet reached the goal of the Mes-sianic Age, we still await the Messiah, we are still in the Pro-cess, not yet in the Attainment, the era of Redemption. And per-haps that is what it means to be human, to be constantly striving — and growing, and improving. A great Sage once said, “Pity the man who has achieved his ideal; he has no reason to continue living!” And so in the teachings of the Sacred Zohar, the fiftieth rung of the ladder is where the loving Lord is to be found, Alone in Glorious Splendor. b

Shabbat Shalom

Shabbat Shalom …

Parshat Behar-BechukotaiLeviticus 25:1-27:34 BY RABBI SHLOMO RISKIN

Chief Rabbi of the City of Efrat, and Dean of Ohr Torah Institutions of Israel

back Israel than Democrats, the overall figures demonstrate that a biased national media has seemingly had no impact on the views of most Americans.

If that is so, why then should anyone care about media bias?

This came into focus again this week due to two outrageous ex-amples from The New York Times. In a piece that first appeared on-line on May 7, a story about the way the way the Israeli defense establishment has devoted its resources to fighting the corona-virus pandemic began with the following: “The Israeli Defense Ministry’s research-and-devel-opment arm is best known for pioneering cutting-edge ways to kill people and blow things up, with stealth tanks and snip-er drones among its more lethal recent projects. But its latest mis-sion is lifesaving.”

As Ron Dermer, Israel’s am-bassador to the United States, tweeted back: “The @nytimes, which buried the Holocaust, is best known for pioneering ways to libel and demonizing the Jew-ish state. Now it is doing the same.”

The diplomat wasn’t the only person complaining. David Har-ris, CEO of the liberal-leaning

American Jewish Committee, called the Times’s phrasing “vile.” As numerous others re-sponded, the goal of the Isra-el Defense Forces has actually always been to save lives by protecting Israeli citizens from terrorists and foes that sought to extinguish the sole Jewish state on the planet.

Nor was this an isolated ex-ample. Two days later, the paper published an article about the re-fusal of the Palestinian Authority to cease its “pay for slay” policies in which it provides terrorists who assault, wound or kill Israe-lis with salaries and pensions for their families. The story focused on an attempt to stop Palestinian banks in the West Bank from processing the payments.

The headline for the Times’s story though, put it this way: “Israel Cracks Down on Banks Over Payments to Palestinian Inmates.” A subhead further de-scribes the issue as one about “payments the Palestinian Au-thority distributes to the families of Palestinians who have spent time in Israeli jails.”

Phrased that way, it makes the effort sound like a way to punish poor souls who have had the bad luck to fall under the power of

the Israeli military and whose families are being prevented from getting the help they need from a benevolent Palestinian Authority. The text of the arti-cle, which vastly overestimated the number of Palestinians who have been imprisoned by Israel over the last half-century, ad-opted the frame of reference of those who regard the terrorists as freedom fighters and “mar-tyrs,” and depicted those benefit-ing from “pay to slay” as victims of injustice. Nor did it detail the sliding scale of compensation offered by the P.A. in which the murderers of Jews get more money than those who merely wound or unsuccessfully attack their victims.

If media bias like this doesn’t impact American public opinion about Israel, should anyone both-er protesting it?

In the first place, it is vital that a newspaper like the Times, which calls itself the nation’s “paper of record” and which does devote more resources to report-ing foreign news than any other outlet, not get away with biased coverage.

Straight news reporting with-out a heaping serving of bias is a thing of the past at the Times.

Their animus against the Trump administration has, whether or not you agree with them about the president, led the paper and other mainstream outlets to dis-card even the pretense of objec-tive reporting with editorializing in headlines and in the text of articles becoming so routine as to be hardly worth protesting anymore.

Still, that doesn’t absolve those of us who still care about ethics in journalism from the duty to point out such egregious prac-tices.

It’s true that most Ameri-cans couldn’t care less what the Times, CNN or other lega-cy media outfits say about any topic. But when it comes to one particular group, what the media, and in particular, The New York Times, says about Is-rael, matters a great deal.

While support for Israel among Americans in general has risen in the past decades, it has declined among Jews with a growing split between their views and those of Israelis. There are a number of reasons for this, including assim-ilation and the resultant shifting demography. Some of it also has to do with politics, as many in a group that overwhelmingly votes

Democratic has followed the rest of their party on this issue.

But there’s more at play here than just that.

We know that praise for Is-rael’s underdog victories in its struggles for survival and posi-tive events like the 1976 Entebbe rescue made Jews everywhere feel better about themselves and more connected to Israel.

The opposite is also true. While some Jews are outraged

by biased coverage that unfairly depicts Israel as a villain, others internalize the calumnies and distance themselves from the Jewish state. An average consum-er of news may not be influenced by the Times. But a not insignif-icant portion of American Jewry still regards the newspaper with the sort of veneration that obser-vant Jews have for religious texts. The Times has been assaulting the Jewish community with the prejudices of its publishers, edi-tors and reporters since the days when, as Dermer rightly notes, it “buried” the story of the Ho-locaust.

Media bias may not have turned Americans against Isra-el, but it has been doing a bang up job of turning Jews against each other for decades. b

state for the purposes of trans-ferring criminal jurisdiction over its territory to The Hague, which sets in motion an inves-tigation into alleged war crimes committed by Israel in the “Oc-cupied Palestinian Territory,” or the West Bank, Gaza Strip and eastern Jerusalem.

Eugene Kontorovich, director of International Law at the Je-rusalem-based Kohelet Policy Forum and director of the Center for International Law in the Mid-dle East at George Mason Uni-versity in Washington, D.C., told JNS that Bensouda “has come to the absurd decision that a non-country can sue a non-mem-ber of the ICC for a non-crime that nobody has ever been pros-ecuted for, in which the ICC prosecutor herself has said does not exist when it comes to Rus-sia and Crimea or Turkey and Cyprus.”

As an initial signatory to the Rome Statue in 2000, which es-tablished the International Crim-inal Court, the country hoped that the court would act in good faith, yet just two years later, Israel it no longer intended to become a party to the statute over concerns that the ICC, sub-jected to political pressures and its impartiality compromised, would invent new crimes and treat Israel unfairly.

Now that Bensouda has de-clared that the ICC has jurisdic-tion to rule on Israeli “crimes” in “Palestine,” one issue she is looking at are “war crimes” Israel allegedly committed “by facilitating the transfer of Israeli civilians into the West Bank since June 13, 2014.”

The other issue she is inves-tigating is “whether efforts by Israeli authorities, beginning in 2018, to disperse demonstrations along the Gaza border fence con-stitute a disproportionate use of force that rises to the threshold of an international crime.”

In response to a number of dif-ficulties raised as to the court’s jurisdiction to decide on matters related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Bensouda said she be-lieves that “Palestine is a state; it is a party to the Rome Statute; and its territory, in which the ICC may exercise jurisdiction, is the West Bank, including East

Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.”In December 2019, Israel’s At-

torney General Avichai Mandel-blit released a detailed memo-randum to explain why the ICC has no jurisdiction over Pales-tine, arguing that “Palestine” has failed to meet the necessary precondition of possessing crim-inal jurisdiction over its territory since a sovereign Palestinian state does not exist at this time.

Five years ago, Bensouda ini-tiated a preliminary investiga-tion into alleged Israeli crimes against Palestinians. Then, in December 2019, she announced her conclusion that the court has jurisdiction over events in “Palestine” since June 13, 2014, and that the other necessary preconditions for investigation have been met.

Following the announcement, the pre-trial chamber — com-prised of three-judges Péter Kovács of Hungary, Marc Perrin de Brichambaut of France and Reine Adélaïde Sophie Alapi-ni-Gansou of Benin — will need to rule on the matter.

Experts Question the Legitimacy of the ICC to Judge Israel

According to Palestinian Media Watch, Bensouda’s impartiali-ty is questionable as there have been contacts at the highest level between the ICC and the Pales-tinian Authority in what can be deemed apparent collusion to charge Israel with crimes.

Indeed, a recent study pub-lished by the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs highlights the ICC’s collaboration with and re-liance on four radical NGOs: Al-Haq, Al-Dameer, Al-Mezan and

the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, some of which are affili-ated with terror organizations, to promote complaints against the United States and Israel at the ICC.

Additionally, in a recent article in The Jerusalem Post, PMW head of legal strategies Maurice Hirsch accused the ICC of colluding with the P.A. to hide payments to ter-rorists to avoid breaking rules on donor funding.

PMW also revealed an import-ant article on the Jordanian Jafra News website suggesting that this entire pre-trial legal pro-cess to determine if the court has jurisdiction is actually “a mere charade with the puppeteer pulling the strings of deception” being none other than Bensouda herself.

According to PMW, “this report by Jafra News suggests that the ICC prosecutor is biased, lacks in-tegrity, and therefore is incapable of conducting a fair proceeding concerning Israel.”

According to Hirsch and Greg-ory Rose in an article written for the Australian Institute of Inter-national Affairs, the ICC’s “brand is tarnished: it is a U.N. body political in essence, defective in execution and undermining the very tenets of law it was set up to protect.”

Hirsch and Rose point to a number of glaring issues in the ICC’s intention to investigate Is-raeli “crimes.”

According to them, ICC judges are “susceptible to self-interest among political considerations”; Bensouda’s personal history “is questionable and casts doubt over her suitability to serve as prosecutor at the ICC,” and that she demonstrates “bias and close ties to Palestinian officials, some of whom should be tried for real war crimes themselves.”

They also note other problems, including the fact that the ICC is “launching investigations of Israeli leaders even before the chamber’s decision as to wheth-er the ICC has jurisdiction to prosecute Israel; the prosecu-tion’s inadequate responses to participants; ample evidence of prosecutorial bias; the citation of anti-Zionist academics while conspicuously omitting author-itative pro-Zionist academic lit-

erature; use of politically biased terms; [and] no mention of Arab terrorism or Gaza rocket attacks against Israelis as context for

Israeli defense activities.”Kontorovich asserted “this

isn’t international law; it’s politics.” b

Report: Israel to Begin Mass Testing for Virus Antibodies(JNS) — I s rae l i

healthcare providers plan to start testing the populat ion for coronavirus antibod-ies this week in an at-tempt to discover how many Israelis have developed immunity to the virus, Israe-li media reported on Sunday.

Depending on the results, la rge seg-ments of the popula-tion could potential-ly not have to worry

about being quaran-tined or isolated and could fly or rejoin the workforce without any restrictions, according to Ynet.

Last week it was re-ported that Israel was planning to conduct 100,000 serological tests for COVID-19 as part of its efforts to determine just how widespread the disease was. Israel has pur-chased 2.4 million test kits to this end, and

once the Health Ministry deems the tests effective, the first to get tested, on a voluntary basis, will be at-risk populations, including medical staff and the elderly, according to the report.

Meanwhile, the government is expanding the aid program to deal with the coronavirus crisis from NIS 80 billion ($22.8 billion) to NIS 100 billion ($28.5 billion), the Israeli Finance Ministry announced on Friday.

To accomplish this the gov-ernment will have to amend the country’s Basic Law: The State Economy, which requires

a Knesset majority, according to a report on Sunday by the Israeli business daily Globes. To finance the program, Israel’s fiscal deficit will have to exceed 10.2 percent of GDP, which it was already expected to reach by the end of the year.

The new funds will go to increasing employment and to at-risk businesses. In addition, funds will be used for infra-structure projects, including the digitization of public services, online health services, and as-sistance for small businesses, according to the report. b

Israeli Researchers Unveil Architecture Secrets of ‘World’s Oldest Temple’

by ROSSELLA TERCATINFor the last quarter of a centu-

ry, the Neolithic site of Göbekli Tepe in southeast Turkey has been intriguing researchers for the size and complexity of its structure, which dates back about 11,500 years, and has been called the “world's oldest temple.” Two archaeologists from Tel Aviv University, PhD candidate Gil Haklay and his supervisor, Prof. Avi Gopher, have now unveiled new secrets of its sophisticated architec-ture, highlighting an intricate geometrical pattern that was conceived before humans had even discovered agriculture or pottery.

“It might be surprising but architectural planning started to develop already 15,000 years ago,” Haklay told The Jerusalem Post. “In the early Neolithic they were already able to plan and accurately build very large and complex projects.”

Göbekli Tepe, however, is dif-ferent and unparalleled com-pared to any other site of the period because of its colossal size, he highlighted.

“We actually have another example of a large scale con-struction from this period and it is located in Jericho where a large tower is preserved in its full height with an internal staircase, but is not as mon-umental as Göbekli Tepe and required much less effort,” the archaeologist pointed out.

Discovered for the first time in the 1960s, forgotten and rediscovered in the 1990s, Göbekli Tepe features dozens of monolithic pillars four to five meters tall placed along at least 20 concentric rings, which archaeologists refer to as “en-

closures." The pillars are dec-orated with remarkable reliefs depicting animals including gazelles, jaguars, Asiatic wild donkeys and wild sheep. It was a place of worship where many people, likely belonging to dif-ferent communities, would con-vene and perform rituals.

The structure and size of the site also help to shed light about the life of those who built it and used it.

“We are talking about hunt-er-gatherers, but at the same time we see signs of a very complex social structure,” Hak-lay said, adding that it is not clear how long its construction took but it might have been centuries if not more, with dif-ferent people initiating it and adding to it. “The findings that we have suggest that the con-

struction started at some point in the PPNA, Pre-Pottery-Neo-lithic-A, about 11,500 years ago, but a second layer dates back to Pre-Pottery-Neolithic-B which probably lasted until 9,000 years ago,” he explained. “However, we are talking about the very initial phase of the planning and the construction. From there, there is a very long history of enclosures that con-tinued to develop and change through time.”

As explained in a paper re-cently published by the Cam-bridge Archaeological Journal, the Israeli researchers manage to unveil a specific geometrical pattern between several enclo-

sures.“We found that there is a

center point in each enclosure, which we identified not only in the three in the main exca-vation area, but also in others located outside it," Haklay ex-plained. "We also found out that the center of these enclo-sures was always located be-tween the two large central pil-lars aligned with the front side. These pillars also presented an anthropomorphic structure and they have a front side. In each enclosure based on the surrounding peripheral pillars was found an alignment with the narrow front side. This was our first observation: an ab-

stract design rule.“We later noticed that the

role of those center points ex-tended beyond an individual enclosure, because the three center points of enclosures B, C and D form an almost perfect equilateral triangle,” he added.

Haklay highlighted that they went on to verify whether the geometric pattern was con-firmed by further observations, for example the orientation of the central pillars. They found many other elements support-ing it. Among others, the main access to the structure was lo-cated between the only two pil-lars carrying anthropomorphic as opposed to animal reliefs.

This discovery also overcame a previous theory common among researchers that the en-closures were conceived and built in unrelated stages.

But how could such a com-plex design be envisioned by people who did not even know how to create a simple pottery vessel?

The archaeologist explained that while hundreds of people contributed to the building of Göbekli Tepe, the planning was probably carried out by a single person or a small group.

“In order to do it, they had to conceptualize architectur-al planning tools like the for-mulation of a floor plan, basic geometry and measurements,” he concluded. These measure-ments were not standardized but allowed them to build the exact form that they had previ-ously planned. b

rate data breaches started with a phishing email.

Check Point researchers iden-tified recent malicious emails posing as the WHO, from a “who.int” domain, with the email subject: “Urgent let-ter from WHO: First human COVID-19 vaccine test/result update.” Seeking to take advan-tage of increased curiosity in the outbreak, the emails con-tained a dangerous attachment containing AgentTesla malware.

A further two examples of extortion emails purportedly from the WHO and the United Nations were also identified, requesting that recipients send donations to several known compromised bitcoin wallets.

Researchers also warned that cyber-criminals have also used fake Zoom domains for phish-ing activity. During the past three weeks, nearly 2,500 new Zoom-related websites have been registered. Some 1.5 per-cent of domains were identified as malicious and another 13 percent as suspicious. Mali-

cious URLs related to Microsoft Teams and Google Meet have also been identified in recent weeks as criminals seek to lure victims and encourage them to download malware.

An average of 192,000 week-ly coronavirus-related attacks have been identified during the past three weeks, representing a 30 percent increase compared to previous weeks, researchers said.

Coronavirus-related attacks were defined as those involv-ing websites with “corona” or “covid” in their domain name, files with coronavirus-related file names and files distributed in emails with coronavirus-re-lated subject lines.

As the pandemic and mea-sures to contain it develop, so too has the registration of coro-navirus-related domains world-wide. Domains related to live maps and symptoms were very common at the beginning of the outbreak, before mirroring the roll-out of relief packages and stimulus payments at the end of

March. Recently, the registration of domains related to post-coro-navirus life and a possible sec-ond wave has increased.

During the past three weeks, almost 20,000 new coronavi-rus-related domains were reg-istered. About 2 percent were identified as malicious and an-other 15 percent were consid-ered suspicious.

To avoid being tricked by attempted phishing attacks, Check Point researchers sug-gest being suspicious of emails or communications from well-known brands or organizations requesting that users click on a link or open an attached doc-ument.

Users should also beware of look-alike domains and unfa-miliar email senders; be cau-tious with files received via email from unknown senders; only order goods from authentic sources; be cautious regarding “special offers”; and not reuse passwords for different applica-tions and accounts. b

Palestinians Say Israel Targeting Prisoners’ Bank Accounts

by MOHAMMED DARAGHMEHRAMALLAH, West Bank (AP)

— Palestinian officials said Fri-day that Israel is forcing banks in the occupied West Bank to close accounts held by the fami-lies of prisoners in Israeli jails to prevent the Palestinian Authority from providing stipends to them.

Israel has long objected to the Palestinian Authority’s payments to the families of prisoners and those killed in the conflict, in-cluding militants, saying it re-wards terrorism. The Palestinians view the payments as a social safety net for those living under decades of military occupation.

The apparent move to target banks comes as the Palestin-ians face a potentially severe economic crisis after weeks of lockdown to combat the corona-virus pandemic. It also comes as Israel vows to annex large parts of the West Bank in line with President Donald Trump’s Middle East plan.

Protesters shattered the win-dows of several bank branch-es and set fires outside some of them late Thursday and early Friday as word of the new regu-lations spread.

Qadora Fares, head of the Pal-estinian prisoners’ association, said relatives of current and for-mer prisoners have told him they were forced to close their ac-counts because of a new Israeli law penalizing banks for facili-tating the payments.

The father of one prisoner told The Associated Press he tried to use an ATM on Thursday but the request was declined. He says the bank told him to withdraw his funds and close the account because of the new Israeli reg-ulations. He spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear Israel would target his assets.

A bank manager said COGAT, the Israeli military body that oversees civilian affairs in the Palestinian territories, warned

banks of the move months ago, saying it would go into effect Sunday. He said the banks are complying because they fear legal action or Israeli raids. He spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing retaliation from angry clients. Other bank managers de-clined to comment, citing similar concerns.

The Israeli Defense Ministry and COGAT did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Fares said the families of around 12,000 current and for-mer prisoners receive monthly allowances from the Palestinian Authority. Prisoners who have served more than five years get around $700 a month until they find employment, and families receive aid according to how many children they have, he said.

He said the new regulation was a “blatant violation’’ of Palestin-ian sovereignty, since the banks are located in areas governed by the Palestinian Authority. The Israeli military regularly carries out arrest raids and other opera-

tions in those areas.Palestinian Prime Minister

Mohammad Shtayyeh issued a statement saying he has formed a committee to “to study the Israeli threats against banks that provide services to families of prisoners and martyrs.’’

Hussein al-Sheikh, an aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, rejected the closing of the accounts, calling it an affront to the “dignity of every Palestinian’’ and a “submission to the will of the occupation.’’

“We hope to create a Palestin-ian national consensus in pro-tecting our families & their rights & preserving their dignity,’’ he tweeted.

The payments are dispensed by the so-called Martyrs’ Fund, which also provides aid to the families of suicide bombers and other militants. Abbas has con-sistently rejected violence in favor of peace talks with Israel, but the negotiations stalled out more than a decade ago. He has repeatedly vowed to continue the payments despite Israeli pressure.

Over the last two years, Israel has deducted the amount of the payments from tax revenues it collects on behalf of the Pales-tinian Authority. Last year, the Palestinian Authority rejected all the tax transfers in protest, but it relented months later.

The Palestinian Authority im-posed heavy coronavirus restric-tions in mid-March, closing non-essential businesses in the parts of the West Bank where it enjoys limited autonomy and banning most travel between towns and villages.

Those measures appear to have succeeded in containing the out-break, with Palestinian authori-ties reporting around 540 cases and only two fatalities. But the lockdown is expected to impose heavy economic costs on the ter-ritory and the cash-strapped Pal-estinian Authority. b

mined to take action against anything that threatened it.

In a short video, Netanyahu warned Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah that Israel had “operated with determination and responsibility. We protected the safety of our citizens and the lives of our soldiers. The man in the bunker in Beirut knows ex-actly why he’s in a bunker.”

“We will continue to do what we need to do to protect Israel’s security — at sea, on land, and in the air, and we will also continue to take action against the threat of precision-guided missiles,” Ne-tanyahu added.

Nasrallah himself was ex-pected to speak about Sunday’s events in an address Monday evening. Earlier Monday, Leba-nese media outlets reported that

Hezbollah was claiming it had footage that disproved Israel’s reports that no Israeli soldiers or civilians had been wounded in the missile attack.

The Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Manar television station report-ed that a Hezbollah official had informed them that the footage would be made public “at the appropriate time.”

Reports in Israel said that as part of Sunday’s clash on the bor-der, the IDF had staged an evac-uation to make Hezbollah think that soldiers had been wounded. On Monday, an Israeli security official said that deceptive tactics were part of warfare, and that it was impossible for Israel to keep reports of wounded secret in events when they occur. b

Report: Iran Used US Servers in Cyberattack

On Israeli Water Facilitiesby ALEX WINSTON

Iran was responsible for a widespread cyberattack on Israe-li water and sewage facilities last month, Fox News reported on Thursday. According to the re-port, Iran used American servers to hack into the facilities.

Foreign correspondent for Fox News Trey Yingst wrote on Twit-ter that, “A senior official at the US Department of Energy de-clined to comment on any specif-ics related to an ‘ongoing investi-gation.’ The official reiterated that the DOE routinely gathers and shares info with private sector partners to protect the US and it’s allies from cyberattacks.”

The attack took place at the end of April and affected several Israeli Water Authority facilities.

The head of the Water Author-ity’s security department, Daniel

Lacker, told head of the cyber department Avi Azar that, “We have received a number of re-ports regarding a cyberattack on the... systems. No damage was reported during the incident,” Ynet reported.

Iran is often accused of cyber-attacks against Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Ne-tanyahu addressed the issue at last year’s CyberTech conference in Tel Aviv, saying that “Iran is attacking Israel on a daily basis. We monitor it and prevent it every day.”

He added: “They are threat-ening in other ways. What is important is that every country can be attacked and each country needs the combination of defense and attack capabilities — and Israel has such ability.” b

Hadar Susskind, Veteran Jewish Professional, To Lead Americans for Peace Now

by RON KAMPEASWASHINGTON (JTA) —

Americans for Peace Now, an in-fluential group on the Jewish left that was among the first to ad-vocate for the two-state solution, is naming as its president Hadar Susskind, a veteran senior official of an array of Jewish groups.

The announcement comes as liberal pro-Israel groups mount a pressure campaign to influ-ence Washington politicians to speak out against plans in Israel to annex parts of the West Bank.

Susskind, 47, over the past two decades has worked in senior positions in such groups as the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, the Jewish public policy umbrel-la; J Street, the liberal Jewish Middle East policy group; and Bend the Arc, a social justice ac-

tivist group. This year he led the bid to increase the representation of a progressive list, Hatikvah, in elections for the World Zionist Congress.

Americans for Peace Now took two years to replace Debra DeLee, who helmed the organi-

zation for 21 years.Susskind “joins us as we face

the most challenging threat posed to date to the two-state solution: annexation,” the group’s chairman, James Klutznick, said Wednesday in a statement. “The resolution of the Israeli/Pales-tinian conflict on the basis of two sovereign and independent states, for two peoples, living side by side in peace and security, is in grave jeopardy.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benja-min Netanyahu has set a dead-line of July 1 to annex parts of the West Bank.

The organization, a constitu-ent member of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, works to influence legislators and policy-makers in Washington.. b

ZOA Doubles Down on Opposition to Lob As Next Conference of Presidents Chair

by JACKSON RICHMAN(JNS) — The Zionist Organi-

zation of America hosted a we-binar on Monday evening about the recent controversy over the new chair of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.

Featured were ZOA nation-al president Mort Klein and chairman Mark Levenson, who talked in detail about concerns regarding former HIAS chair Dianne Lob, who was elected on April 28 as the chair-elect of the 53-member umbrella orga-nization with the support of 31 member organizations.

During the webinar, Klein doubled down on objections to Lob and alleged that, in re-prisal, a number of member

organizations have called for the ZOA’s ouster from the big-tent group.

Ahead of the webinar, Klein told JNS that “some organiza-tions are so upset about our campaign against HIAS and the nomination of HIAS chair Dianne Lob as the new chair of the Conference that they are now calling for ZOA’s ouster from the Conference.”

Klein specifically pointed to the Anti-Defamation League, a member organization, of being behind the push. (The ADL did not respond to multiple re-quests for comment.) He did not mention which other members supported the move.

JNS reached out to some of these organizations. A few,

such as the American Zionist Movement and Americans for Peace Now, stated that they are not calling for ZOA’s oust-er; others, including Workers Circle said that the issue be-tween the ZOA and Conference of Presidents should be handled internally.

AIPAC and Hillel Interna-tional each stated that nei-ther is involved in the dispute. B’nai B’rith International and United Synagogue of Conser-vative Judaism, declined to comment.

Lob served as HIAS chair between 2016 and 2019. Her nominat ion and ult imate appointment was met with significant objections from longtime Conference mem-bers and financial supporters uncomfortable with political positions by HIAS, which have specifically clashed with the Trump administration over U.S. immigration policies. At the same time, with the de-cline of Jewish refugees, some see HIAS as no longer integral or even attached to its Jewish origins, with HIAS now focus-ing on assisting refugees from Muslim and other countries.

HIAS has also signed a let-ter in support of anti-Semitic Women’s March leader Linda Sarsour, who held a fundrais-er for HIAS in October 2018, stating “[We] publicly state our commitment to working along-side her [Sarsour] for a more just and equal society.”

It has also been accused of collaborating with Islamic groups that allegedly have links to Hamas and terrorist activi-

ties, as well as anti-Israel orga-nizations including IfNotNow and Jewish Voice for Peace.

At the same time, questions have been raised over concerns regarding the nomination pro-cess and possibly bylaw vio-lations behind Lob’s selection. In a widely distributed letter, 17 individuals associated with member organizations of the Conference accused the um-brella group of a “pattern of failures to comply with the basic procedures set forth in the Conference’s governing doc-ument.”

Current Conference chair Arthur Stark will remain in his position for another year until Lob takes over in 2021. She works as head of global business development for the investment management firm AllianceBernstein.

Ahead of the webinar, the ZOA and the Conference feuded via email about the webinar itself, according to emails ob-tained by JNS.

On May 4, Stark sent an email addressed to Klein and Leven-

son, telling them that member organizations have complained about the proposed webinar and demanded that ZOA can-cel it.

“Stark told me to ‘cease and desist, and cancel the webinar,’ ” Klein told JNS.

In an email to Stark, Leven-son replied that ZOA’s concerns have not been heard or consid-ered within the umbrella orga-nization. (Stark did not respond to a request for comment.)

In response to a JNS question during Monday’s webinar about whether ZOA might leave the Conference and attempt to form its own entity, Klein said that while there have been people have suggested forming an al-ternative group of pro-Israel Jewish voices, “we have not considered leaving the confer-ence.”

Nonetheless, Klein noted that if J Street, which was reject-ed from the Conference in 2014, were to be admitted, the ZOA would “have to think very se-riously whether we want to sit” with it. b

Central Council of Jews in Germany Launches ‘Meet a Jew’ Project

by JOE BAUR(JTA) — The Central Coun-

cil of Jews in Germany has launched a “Meet a Jew” project designed to increase contact be-tween Germans and the coun-try’s Jews, who make up 0.2 percent of the population.

One of the project’s over 300 Jewish volunteers from different denominational backgrounds are paired with Germans to talk about their lives, usually in a classroom setting. The topics can range from discussions of school life to whether or not they observe the Sabbath, and they often touch on personal experi-ences with anti-Semitism.

“We realized a lot of people in Germany don’t know Jewish people in person,” project coor-dinator Mascha Schmerling said. “The knowledge that they have about Jews comes from histo-ry books, from school, or it’s connected to the Shoah or cur-rent anti-Semitism or sometimes through the policies of Israel.”

The project is supported by the German Ministry of Family Af-fairs and Women. It’s not affili-ated with the “Meet a Jew, Make a Friend” project that debuted in New York earlier this year.

“Our idea is really to introduce modern-day Jewish life, and to give Jewish people a face and a voice,” Schmerling said.

Lina Roisenwasser, 30, is a doctor in gynecology and obstet-rics based in Berlin. She joined

an earlier version of the proj-ect, called “Rent A Jew,” while studying in Mainz.

“I just think it’s important that we talk to each other and that they’re not just talking about us as victims in histo-ry bookings, like we’re just a chapter in German history,” she said. “I think it’s important that we show that we belong to the country now. We are part of society. We are living.” b

Israel Isolates Coronavirus Antibody in ‘Significant Breakthrough’: Minister

(Reuters) — Israel has isolat-ed a key coronavirus antibody at its main biological research laboratory, the Israeli defence minister sa id on Monday, calling the step a “significant breakthrough” toward a possi-ble treatment for the COVID-19 pandemic.

The “monoclonal neutralis-ing antibody” developed at the Israel Institute for Biological Research (IIBR) “can neutralise it (the disease-causing corona-virus) inside carriers’ bodies,” Defence Minister Naftali Ben-nett said in a statement.

The statement added that Bennett visited the IIBR on Monday where he was briefed “on a significant breakthrough in finding an antidote for the coronavirus”.

It quoted I IBR Di rec tor Shmuel Shapira as saying that the antibody formula was being patented, after which an inter-national manufacturer would be sought to mass-produce it.

The IIBR has been leading Israeli efforts to develop a treat-ment and vaccine for the coro-navirus, including the testing of blood from those who re-covered from COVID-19, the

respiratory disease caused by the virus.

Antibodies in such samples — immune-system proteins that are residues of successful-ly overcoming the coronavirus — are widely seen as a key to developing a possible cure.

The antibody reported as having been isolated at the IIBR is monoclonal, meaning it was derived from a single recovered cell and is thus potentially of more potent value in yielding a treatment.

Elsewhere, there have been coronavirus treatments devel-oped from antibodies that are polyclonal, or derived from two or more cells of differ-ent ancestry, the magazine Science Direct reported in its May issue.

Israel was one of the first countries to close its borders and impose increasingly strin-gent restrictions on movement to hamper the domestic corona-virus outbreak. It has reported 16,246 cases and 235 deaths from the illness.

Israel Demands Major Changes in UN Peacekeeping in Lebanon

by EDITH M. LEDERERUNITED NATIONS (AP) —

Israel’s U.N. ambassador said Wednesday that his government is demanding major changes in

the way the U.N. peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon operates on the ground and has support from the United States.

Ambassador Danny Danon told a video press briefing that Israel will insist that peace-keepers have access to all sites, that they have freedom of movement and that any time they are being blocked the U.N. Security Council must be im-mediately informed.

The peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, was originally created to oversee the withdrawal of Israeli troops after a 1978 inva-sion. The mission was expand-ed after a 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah militants so that peacekeepers could de-ploy along the Lebanon-Israel border to help Lebanese troops extend their authority into their country’s south for the first time in decades.

Israel has repeatedly accused Iranian-backed Hezbollah mil-itants of impeding the peace-keepers from carrying out their mandate.

“We have seen that slowly there is less places that the troops in the peacekeeping operation can actually travel in southern Lebanon,” Danon said. “So we want them to have full freedom of movement.”

“I have discussed it with the commander of the force and we tell them, ‘You are there, you cannot move and you can’t in-

spect, so why you are there?,”’ he said. “‘You have to be more active, you have to move freely and you have to inspect all sites.”’

UNIFIL includes more than 9,400 ground troops and over 850 naval personnel in a Mari-time Task Force. Its budget from July 2018-June 2019 was $474 million.

Danon said Israel knows that on many occasions UNI-FIL troops haven’t been able to enter suspicious sites, “and we proved in the past that Hezbol-lah are digging tunnels, they are bringing weapons to the border, and only in the last few weeks we have had a few inci-dents on the border.”

Danon said Israel will con-tinue pushing for reforms be-fore the mandate for UNIFIL is renewed during the summer and will be explaining Israel’s position to council members. He said Israel is grateful for U.S. Ambassador Kelly Craft’s strong support.

He said the United States is raising the issue of the budget “and saying very clearly if they are not effective, why are we spending so much money on the troops?”

“We are not calling to shut down the mission tomorrow morning, but we are saying if they cannot change, if they cannot function, why you are spending so much money?” Danon said. “We don’t want to

send the troops back to their countries, but we want them to become more efficient.”

On Monday, the U.N. Security Council met to discuss imple-mentation of a 2004 resolution that called for the Lebanese government to extend its au-thority throughout the country and all Lebanese and non-Leb-anese militias to disband.

U.N. Secretary-General Anto-nio Guterres’ latest report said Lebanon’s government contin-ued with those efforts but Leba-nese and non-Lebanese militias continue to operate outside gov-ernment control in violation of the resolution and the Taif Ac-cords that ended the country’s 1975-90 civil war.

“Several groups across the political spectrum in Lebanon possess weapons outside gov-ernment control,” the U.N. chief said, adding that “Hezbollah is the most heavily armed militia in the country.”

Guterres said he continues to urge Lebanon’s government and armed forces “to take all measures necessary to prohib-it Hezbollah and other armed groups from acquiring weap-ons and building paramilitary capacity outside the authority of the state.”

He also urged countries with close ties to Hezbollah “to en-courage the transformation of the group into a solely civilian political party, as well as its disarmament.” b

Moscow’s Jewish Museum Uploads Previously Unseen Photos of Berlin’s Soviet Occupiers

by CNAAN LIPHSHIZ(JTA) — Moscow’s Jewish mu-

seum is showing previously un-seen photographs from the Red Army’s invasion of Berlin during World War II in an exhibit that has been moved online.

The exhibition debuted on Saturday, May 9 — the 75th an-niversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany.

Most Soviet photographs from that period were carefully staged, edited and even manip-ulated for propaganda purposes. Other photos were destroyed or kept under wraps for decades because of the dangers of dis-

seminating information that did not fit the authorities’ purposes during the Soviet Union.

But the 80-odd works curated by the Moscow Jewish Muse-um and Tolerance Center, which Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited multiple times since it opened in 2012, include snapshots of battle-hardened soldiers, some with overgrown hair, enjoying the summer sun against the dramatic background of bombed-out Berlin.

The exhibit features works by the likes of prominent Soviet artists such as Ilya Arons and Valery Ginzburg, who were both

exhibition ahead of May 9 — a major national holiday in Rus-sia and across the Soviet Union — was made long before the COVID-19 crisis hit, said Liya Chechik, a senior research fel-low at the museum, during a videoconference Thursday of the Association of European Jewish Museums.

But the screen-friendly format greatly facilitated the switch on-line, she said.

“Luckily this is something that can easily be made virtual,” she said. b

Poll: Most Eastern Jerusalem Residents Prefer Palestinian Citizenship to Israeliby NADAV SHRAGAI

(Israel Hayom) — According to a new study by the Washing-ton Institute for Near East Pol-icy, there has been a dramatic shift in the political preferences of eastern Jerusalem residents over the past few years.

According to the survey, which was carried out in con-junction with Palestinian poll-sters, only about 15 percent of respondents in a recent poll said they prefer Israeli citizen-ship over Palestinian citizen-ship, compared to 52 percent who said they would rather be “Israeli” and not “Palestinian” when questioned on the mat-ter in polls conducted between 2010 and 2015.

The survey was carried out under the directorship and su-pervision of Dr. David Pollock throughout 2018-2019 and in

the first two months of 2020, and the results were presented during an online event spon-sored by the Jerusalem Insti-tute for Policy Research, which helped Pollock during his time and work in Israel. Pollock has surveyed the views of eastern Jerusalem Arabs since 2010.

Over the weekend, Pollock explained that between 2010 and 2015, many residents of eastern Jerusalem preferred Israeli citizenship for prac-tical reasons, irrespective of self-identity or ideology.

“They wanted more comfort-able access to work, education, health-care, welfare and social services,” said Pollock, “and even to the sea.”

However, he said, “in the past five years, there has been a dra-matic change, which I, as a vet-eran pollster, have never seen

anything like. All of a sudden support dropped [to] 15 percent [from] 52 percent, and only a small minority of east Jerusalem residents now say in polls that if they had the choice, they would choose Israeli citizenship.”

When asked to explain the reason for this, Pollock said there were several answers, “which the Palestinians them-selves provide.”

The first answer, he said, was the so-called “knife intifada” that began in October 2015 and persisted for a year-and-a-half. “The harsh Israeli response was experienced by the Palestinians from a nationalistic perspec-tive,” said Pollock.

The second answer, he said, was the tensions surround-ing the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount. “Many Pales-tinians in east Jerusalem and

in the West Bank believe Israel indeed poses a threat to Al-Aq-sa,” he said.

The third factor, according to Pollock, is the “increased anti-Israel activity in east Jeru-salem on the part of the Pales-tinian Authority, the northern branch of the Islamic Move-ment, Turkey and other ele-ments. The fact that 150,000 residents of east Jerusalem cur-rently live ‘beyond the security barrier’ — impeding their ac-cess to Israeli services — also influences the sharp change in their positions.”

Most Palestinians still believe Israel is an illegitimate state and yearn for control over all of “‘historic Palestine,” said Pol-lock, but “are realistic enough to tell pollsters this is ‘a dream’ and that ‘Israel is here to stay.’”

The polls conducted by the

Washington Institute over the past decade in eastern Jerusa-lem, the West Bank and Gaza have garnered considerable in-terest from the Palestinians, Americans and Israelis, who have all consulted with Pollock about their findings.

Pollock also asked Palestin-ians why, based on their views of Israel, they aren’t pursuing another intifada. Their answers made it clear that they fear a tough Israeli response, and also lack confidence in their leaders to secure anything of benefit for them as an outcome.

“For now they care more about their day-to-day lives — income, health, education, family,” said Pollock, who believes future solutions pertaining to eastern Jerusalem must also account for the views, feelings and sensitiv-ities of its residents. b

“He Really is Jewish” — Little Richard’s Lifelong Love Affair with Judaism

by BENJAMIN IVRYLittle Richard, the rock and roll pi-

oneer who died on May 9 at age 87, brought a galvanic charge to live perfor-mances of such songs as “Tutti Frutti,” “Heebie Jeebies” and “Lucille,” drawing sustained inspiration from what he con-sidered to be a Jewish identity.

This self-definition went beyond what some writers have identified as emo-tional parallels between Little Richard’s music and Jewish culture. Music histo-rian Steven Lee Beeber described Little Richard’s “Heebie Jeebies” as identical to the agitated feeling of pins-and-needles known in Yiddish as shpilkes. Little Richard’s explosive stage shows were an extended restless leg syndrome, like a Pavlovian response to electric current. The singer himself repeatedly avowed that Jewishness played a part in this expression of energy.

In a 1972 BBC-TV interview to publi-cize The London Rock and Roll Show, a concert held at Wembley Stadium in August 1972, he described how other talents were inspired by him: “All of them came from me, po’ little bitty me, a lil’ Jewish boy, black bottom, from Geor-gia.” The BBC interviewer Francis Fuchs, clearly nonplussed by this unsolicited remark, exhaled with an embarrassed giggle and changed the subject.

Little Richard’s personal identities were wide-ranging, to put it mildly, and Judaism was more than a transitory interest. The American Jewish director Paul Mazursky, who cast Little Richard in his films “Down and Out in Beverly Hills” (1986) and “The Pickle” (1993) noted in his memoirs that when the actor refused to shoot the former film on a Friday evening, Mazursky “figured it was a scam,” but asked Little Rich-ard’s manager, who “responded with a straight face, ‘He really is Jewish…”

In October 1985, shortly after the movie was completed, Little Richard was involved in a car crash. He told United Press International: “All I remembered when I awakened was I was in a Jewish hospital, and I said ‘Thank God.’”

He was treated at Cedars-Sinai Medi-cal Center in Los Angeles, by Dr. Edwin Gromis of the Young Israel of North Beverly Hills an orthopaedist who is still practicing. Dr. Gromis, along with an unnamed brother, also a physician, were taking care of the singer according to press reports, which may explain why he understood that it was a “Jewish hospital.”

As Little Richard recovered, one of his bedside visitors was Bob Dylan, who in the 1980s was displaying inter-est in a return to Judaism. In December 1986, Florida’s “Sun-Sentinel” reported under the headline LITTLE RICHARD HIGH ON JUDAISM that the singer “an-nounced that he has converted to Ju-daism. Saying that he celebrated Rosh

Hashanah while on tour in England this fall, he added, ‘I’ve only missed going to synagogue one Saturday for the past year.’ One supporter of his recent conversion was none other than Bob Dylan who, Richard said, ‘spent seven hours at my bedside, talking about the importance of keeping the Sabbath’ when Richard was in the hos-pital last year after being injured in a car wreck.”

The following year, Playboy Maga-zine sent the film director John Waters to interview Little Richard. In response to the question “Are you Jewish now?” he said:

“There’s something I prefer not say-ing. I will say this. I’m a believer in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I believe the seventh-day Sabbath is God’s way. I believe we should eat kosher. I was invited to a party night before last. Rod Stewart’s. I didn’t go, because I open the Sabbath on Friday.”

Persisting with the subject, Waters

inquired if Bob Dylan had converted him to Judaism after the car accident. To which Little Richard only spoke of his closeness to his “blood brother” Dylan. Indeed, in his 1959 Hibbing High School yearbook in Minnesota, then-Robert Zimmerman had listed as his life’s am-bition “To join Little Richard,” as if the singer were an evangelical movement.

Little Richard continually made this adherence a part of his stage routine, joking with a Ravinia Festival audience in 1998, according to the “Chicago Tri-bune” of January 2000,

“I’m the only Jewish guy in the busi-ness with a suntan.”

More seriously, when the English art critic Waldemar Januszczak interviewed him, Little Richard inquired, “You’re a Jew boy, ain’t you?” Januszczak replied that he was of Polish origin, whereupon Little Richard insisted, as if his interloc-utor were ashamed of his true origins, “Ain’t nuttin’ wrong with being Jewish!”

As fans familiar his life story know, Little Richard, born in Macon, Georgia, was imbued in evangelical worship in Baptist, African Methodist Episcopal (AME) and Pentecostal churches.

In 1957, he enrolled at Oakwood Col-lege in Alabama, a black Seventh-day Adventist institution. He was ordained a minister in 1970 and was evangelizing again by 1977. His preaching underlined the importance of racial harmony, ide-alizing a peaceable kingdom in which beings of all origins could live together.

So Little Richard saw Judaism as not contradicting his other beliefs. During a June 2000 New York appearance at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill, he reminded the crowd that he was Jewish, specifying he “never works on Fridays,” not even at high profile gigs such as Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Before singing the song

‘For Israel to Give Up its Heartland is Like The U.S. Giving Up the Statue of Liberty’

by ARIEL KAHANA(Israel Hayom) — The interview with

U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Fried-man was not held at the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem, despite the fact that he recently inducted a stunning new office in the embassy complex. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the meeting took place in the car park of the ambassa-dor’s home in Herzliya, among security gates and diplomatic vehicles — a rather unusual background for an interview marking two years to the historic relo-cation of the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

It is also safe to say that Friedman’s ambassadorship will be equally his-toric. His first year in office, 2017, was dedicated to pushing U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. In 2018, he followed that with efforts to see the United States recognize Israeli sover-eignty over the Golan Heights, and 2019-2020 have been dedicated to pushing the Trump administration’s “Peace to Prosperity” vision.

Many minds had to be put at ease along the way, and many myths and prejudices had to be debunked, but at the end of the day, he has done every-thing he can. The ball is now in Israel’s court.

Presumptive Democratic presiden-tial nominee former vice president Joe Biden, I remind him, said this week that if elected, he would not reverse the embassy’s relocation to Jerusalem. Does that mean it will stay there forever? Friedman said he hopes so, but added that “in my view of Jewish history, noth-ing can be taken for granted.”

In any case, said Friedman, he derives great satisfaction from people’s reactions to the move, especially those of Holo-caust survivors.

“One thing that I really get satisfac-tion from is the reaction from ordinary people that cared about this for so many years, and never thought it would hap-pen. Especially, what really has given me a great sense of achievement is when I talk to Holocaust survivors. They look at this and say this is such an act of kindness, loyalty, and support and [they] are so glad we lived to see it.”

Q: Looking back over the past two years, what did the U.S. gain from mov-ing the embassy to Jerusalem?

A: First, we don’t look at things that way. We don’t think everything in life is transactional, we tend to do things be-cause they’re the right thing — because you agreed to do it, you promised to do it. When you keep your promise, I think those are all benefits in and of them-selves. I think that in addition to those things, the move of the embassy [to Jerusalem] established President Trump as being someone who keeps promis-es, someone who doesn’t flinch from standing with his allies, who doesn’t fear enemies, who doesn’t fear negative commentary: He’s prepared to do what he thinks is right. I think that image of the president has been helpful to the president and the country in terms of moving forward with our foreign policy in other places as well.

Q: After two years of the U.S. Embassy being in Jerusalem, only Guatemala has a full-fledged embassy in Jerusalem.

Aren’t you disappointed that other coun-tries haven’t followed suit?

A: Well, what I’ve learned is a couple of things: Number one, Israel doesn’t have a friend like the U.S. Second, I think there are other countries that do make calculations about what they’ll gain and what they’ll lose, and I think that process is taking some time. The hearts of many countries I’ve spoken with support moving. Frankly, there are a lot of countries in the eastern part of Europe that would have moved forward on this if it weren’t for the discipline that’s imposed from within the E.U., which makes it harder for people to pursue independent foreign policies. But I do think that will eventually come to fruition. And I think you’ll see more as well, perhaps in South America, Asia. There are lots of conversations still going on, it’s just that it takes a little bit of time.

Q: Has it been decided where in Je-rusalem the new embassy will stand? There is a proposal to keep the current location, but there is also a plan to erect a new building in Hebron Road in the city.

A: I don’t think so, it’s still being con-sidered. Right now the embassy is in a beautiful location. It’s on I think over 70 dunams [17 acres] of land, with beauti-ful views. We have a beautiful facility — we put some work into it over the past year, my office as you know was ex-panded, the other office was expanded, and that in conjunction with what we have on Agron Street gives us enough space to have a significant operation there. Beyond that, we are still thinking of perhaps consolidating everything in one location.

Q: Let’s move on to President Trump’s peace plan, and the issue of applying Is-raeli sovereignty to Judea and Samaria: Does Israel have the green light to apply sovereignty in six weeks?

A: [Right now] we have a conceptual map — it’s conceptual; it’s impossible to declare sovereignty from something that was so lacking in details. What we [the Trump administration] said was, when the mapping is done and when the government of Israel agrees that they will freeze the part of construction in Area C [of Judea and Samaria] that’s not set for sovereignty — make it available for four years — and when the prime

minister agrees that he will negotiate with the Palestinians on the bases of the Trump peace plan — which he’s already agreed to, he agreed to it on the first day — when that happens, we will recognize sovereignty, Israel sovereignty over the area that the plan contemplates as part of Israel.

So, there’s really three things left that have to get done: The mapping has to get done, the [Israeli] government has to agree to the freeze on half of Area C, and most importantly, the government of Israel has to declare sovereignty. We are not declaring sovereignty — the government of Israel has to declare sovereignty. And then we’re prepared to recognize it along those lines. As the secretary of state said, it’s Israel’s decision in the first place. So, you have to go first.

Q: When does the four-year count-down begin?

A: On the day that Israel begins to assert its sovereignty and declares the construction freeze in the areas agreed upon in Area C.

Q: Are there any additional terms or steps?

A: No.Q: Not from you? Not from others in

the administration?A: The administration speaks in one

voice. The terms written in the vision of peace are the conditions that are bind-ing, and nobody has any intention of changing what is written.

Q: There are other reports suggesting that there is the new condition of an Israeli commitment to agree to the es-

tablishment of a Palestinian state.A: On that issue, the condition is that

the prime minister will agree to nego-tiate with the Palestinians and invite the Palestinians to meet, to engage in discussions and keep those discussions open, and pursue them in good faith, for four years.

Q: He has actually already done so.A: And he has to continue that. Right

now, the Palestinians are not willing to come to the table, but if two years from now they come back and say, ‘Wait, we made a mistake and are willing to negotiate,’ he must be willing to sit and have those discussions. But it’s a finite amount of time, we want to keep that option [open] for four years. That’s the idea.

Q: Should it be a government decision, or is the prime minister’s statement sufficient?

A: From our perspective, the arrange-ment is with the State of Israel — the government of Israel — and not with anybody in particular. [However, re-garding negotiations] there’s nothing to approve right now because the Palestin-ians haven’t agreed to any of the terms.

Q: Will a fourth election affect the sovereignty moves or are those two separate issues?

A: No one on my side has approached or confronted that issue, so the answer is I don’t know. Obviously, the docu-ment itself does not have any link [to a fourth election], it would not be altered by a fourth election based on what the document says.

Q: Regarding the construction freeze you mentioned — are there any local-ities that cannot develop during these four years? Because, as far as I can see, the freeze doesn’t apply to the existing localities, only to open areas.

A: Yes, you’re mostly correct. There are three categories of territory in Area C. There’s the area that is populated by Jewish communities, and sovereignty allows these communities to grow sig-nificantly. That’s the majority — let’s call that 97 percent of the population — and in those areas there’s no restriction on growth. For example, Ariel will be the same as Tel Aviv [there will be no restriction]. So that’s category number one.

Category No. 2 is the half of Area C that will be reserved for the Palestinians [to be reserved for a Palestinian state for the allotted four years], and there will

be no building there — from either side — Israelis or Pales-tinians.

Then there’s a third catego-ry, called the “enclaves” or the “bubbles.” This is three per-cent, the Jewish communities that are remote. And so, what happens to them is, Israel de-clares sovereignty over those communities, but they don’t expand — they can expand up but they can’t expand out. So as to the vast vast majority of set-tlements, the rules would be the same as [inside] the Green Line.

Q: What can you say about the mapping committee’s work?

A: The primary task belongs to the Israeli side because they’re the ones that have to come up with what’s best for the State of Israel. The overrid-ing requirement [is] that the Israeli portion of Area C will not exceed 50 percent of Area C [which], 30 percent of the West Bank. We’re talking and listen-

ing, and everyone understands that come July, certainly people on the Israeli side want to be ready to go July 1.

‘World nations praise Trump’s peace plan’

Q: What do you say to those who claim that the president’s peace plan “kills peace”?

A: We don’t agree with that at all. We’ve created a geographic footprint for the Palestinians, which is double [areas] A and B right now. We’ve created the prospect for contiguity between Gaza and the West Bank, which Israel has no obligation to do — I mean it’s over Israeli sovereign territory. That’s a significant accomplishment to the extent that there is ever going to be a unified Palestinian people.

We’ve created the beginnings of an infrastructure fund that would grow dramatically if the Palestinians would come to the table and engage on this. We’ve identified the changes

that would have to occur within Palestinian society and govern-ment in order for this to work — we are not ignoring the fact that Palestinians continue to pay terrorists or continue to incite violence. That’s further than anybody has gone before, by a mile.

This is an enormous oppor-tunity that they shouldn’t give up, and I think most countries in the world recognize that. The ones that are clinging to the old way are doing so, to my view, for matters of perhaps pride, or maybe they own the old process… but the old pro-cess failed. It failed miserably. Most of the nations of the world did not condemn this at all, we had some excellent responses from many countries, including countries in the region.

Q: You are probably aware of the criticism from the Israeli right over the fact that Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu

and you are setting up a Pales-tinian state.

A: I’ve had conversations with lots of people on the right. I have great respect for them and I understand their point of view very well, it’s a point of view that I share in many respects. But here are the facts that never go away: First is that nobody wants to establish sovereignty of the entirety of Judea and Samaria and provide citizenship to the millions of Palestinians that are there.

Second, there is no way in the modern world that a country, especially a country as great as Israel, could possibly have… two classes of citizens, where one votes and the other doesn’t. It can’t be done.

[People on the right] say they can’t agree to a Palestinian state, because the Palestinian state will be a terrorist state [that] will continue to threaten Israel, will continue to incite, pay terrorists, we can’t live with them.

I understand them, but [we are saying] you don’t have to live with that Palestinian state, you have to live with the Pal-estinian state when the Pal-estinians become Canadians. And when the Palestinians be-come Canadians all your issues should go away. We are not going for the approach — and we’re serious — [that] adminis-trations in the past [have, when they] were willing to overlook the risks of living side by side with the Palestinians.

The difference between us and everybody else is we don’t give anybody a pass. If they can’t achieve those milestones in the plan, we will be the last ones to encourage Israel. We have no interest in recognizing any state that doesn’t reach those milestones anywhere around the world. [We will not recognize a state] that’s going to be a terrorist state or a the-ocracy or one that glorifies ter-rorism, we don’t want it for us, let alone Israel.

And Hebron, Shiloh, Beit El, Ariel — I mean these are not places people were talking about. Even people that were talking about the Gush and Ma’aleh Adumim, which you could get even some Democrat-ic administration to talk about the possibility, but nobody ever talked about the biblical heart-

land of Israel. And part of it was because we didn’t understand how important it is, to Israel. It’s unreasonable to ask Israel to give it up. It’s like asking the U.S. to give up the Statue of Liberty. It’s a small little thing, but we’re not giving it up, it’s very important to us. Or [the] Lincoln Memorial — at any price! Because it’s our national DNA. And [the same goes for] the Jewish people.

‘The concern: China depen-dence’

Q: The coronavirus crisis has increased the tension between the U.S. and China.

A: The one lesson we learned in America is to be more self-re-liant. On essential materials, products and chemicals. If you go back to President Trump in 2016, [he] said before the elec-tion that the U.S. has export-ed way too much of its man-ufacturing offshore to China. We became seduced by cheap labor, and we gave all the man-ufacturing jobs away, and we hurt the country, we hurt the American worker. And that turned out to be pretty prophet-ic when you look where we are today. I don’t think he’s getting enough credit for that.

Q: So how do you recommend that Israel act in relation to China?

A: We have discussions with the Israeli government all the time; there was a recognition now about the dangers of be-coming too reliant on China or allowing China to be a major player in strategic assets of the State of Israel. This applies to any other country as well.

Q: There are all kinds of re-ports of the so-called “Russian collusion story” attributed to President Trump in the 2016 election. Where do things stand now?

A: Trump has been fully exonerated. We are learning things now that are very dis-turbing about the way in which, in the early days of the ad-ministration, the president was treated by the FBI.

Q: Do you think President Trump is going to win the 2020 elections?

A: I certainly hope so. I think his record has been outstanding and I think that record merits another four years, and I hope that’s recognized by the U.S. electorate. b

“Old Time Rock and Roll,” he asked for “two Jewish people” to join him onstage, followed by two Italians, Mexicans, Indians, and “two people who don’t know what they are.” This group of dancers drawn from the public clearly represented some form of essential human kinship at the heart of his world view.

He told “Rolling Stone” in May 1970, “You understand, we are all God’s bouquet, we all

need each other the same as the birds need air. If a man is hun-gry, I don’t care if he’s black, white, Jewish or Mexican, you don’t need to go out and talk to him about his hunger. Feed that man; then talk to him about eating again and how to keep eating. I think we need to learn to live together because unity is going to make things happen, and where there’s unity there is strength.”

All the black churches that Little Richard was affiliated with advocated ecumenical out-reach, especially after World War II, even if this was some-times done in a proselytizing spirit. He was acutely aware of mortality due to his own brushes with death in acci-dents and the tragic demises of early friends and influences among African American musi-cians, including Esquerita, Billy

Wright, and Larry Williams. One record he enjoyed citing, of the spiritual “Strange Things Happening Every Day” by Sister Rosetta Tharpe implied that for the faithful, odd occurrences were as habitual as they were in Little Richard’s life and ca-reer. Yet with strength drawn in part from Jewish observance, he reconciled and integrated them into his artistry.

An AME educational website

praises Mordecai in the Book of Esther for advancing Jewish well-being, concluding: “We’re blessed not to be served, but to bless others who are looking for signs of hope.” Insofar as Little Richard, throughout his long career, represented hope for oppressed racial, sexual, and religious minorities, he might be considered a Mordecai of American popular music. b©Forward. Stylish Garage Doorsby RICHARD JOHNSTON

Having an affordable and easy to use garage doors effectively helps maximizing the value of your home. A nice and appeal-ing garage door is easily dis-tinguished from the rest in the neighborhood. Garage doors are somehow a must to have at your home. Further, if you wish to add a wow element to the overall look of your house, custom-made doors are a great option; they have all the fea-tures as needed and laid to your specifications.

Gone are the days of manu-ally operating doors. The doors in recent times are controlled by a remote. This has helped in producing better usable garage space. Selecting the best door for the garage depends upon many factors such as style of house, material preferred, how cozy one needs the garage to be and others. The material used in making the garage doors in Bristol may be wood, fiberglass or steel. Therefore, while installation of the door it is important to know the type and preferred material or if you

wish to have a window options or heated garages. It is essen-tial to create the preference list beforehand.

Wood garage doors make much affordable and durable option. Solid cedar is mainly used in the manufacturing of durable doors. It lasts for years and looks extremely classy. On the other hand, steel doors don’t crack or fall apart; no matter what weather conditions prevail. The best part with steel is that it needs no paint or re-finishing at any point and is

capable of standing firm with low maintenance. Moreover, steel looks so stylish as well. Steel sheets are today available in many different shades and style. It is possible that one gets the same look as wooden doors but in much durable and better material. No problems of related to rust and they are so strong; this is something add o with steel garage doors in Bath.

Hence, you as a garage owner need to decide for the look of the door and the exact type required. H –Artipot

Questions to Answer When Considering a New Deck

When planning a deck project, choosing the right material is key to the enjoyment and value you’ll get from your outdoor living space. Today, there are more choices in decking mate-rials than ever before, including high-performance composites, which are increasingly replacing wood in backyards across the country.

As you weigh your options, here are answers to some of the most commonly asked ques-tions about composite decking:

What are the key benefits of composite decking? Unlike wood, high-performance composite decking resists fading, scratch-ing and mold — and won’t rot, warp, crack or splinter. Wood decking does not age gracefully, even with regular maintenance

— including washing, staining and sealing that can take sev-eral days and a considerable number of materials and tools. Composites require minimal up-keep. You never need to worry about painful splinters or the laborious sanding, staining or painting — just an occasional soap-and-water cleaning will do the trick.

Does composite decking look natural?

The aesthetics of composite decking have evolved consid-erably over the years. Today’s offerings feature high-definition wood-grain patterns that are nearly indistinguishable from real wood textures. Additionally, composite decking comes in a wider variety of color options to complement the exterior of any home. Ranging from rich browns and warm umbers to spicy reds and pristine grays, composites are more natural than ever before and boast a vi-

brancy that remains unchanged without having to stain and re-stain year after year.

How do composite costs com-pare with wood?

Initially, composite decking costs more, board for board, than pressure-treated lumber. But rather than deteriorating over time, composite decking delivers more long-term value due to its minimal maintenance requirements. When you con-sider the cumulative costs of power washing, sanding, stain-ing and painting a wood deck

Gorgeous Garden Walkway Ideas for Your Home

by DALE HARRIS This summer, don’t leave

your flowerbeds looking ho-hum. Check out these 5 gor-geous garden walkway ideas.

Take the First StepStepping stone walkways are

always in style. They appeal to everyone – especially children. They love using them for their summertime chalk art!

Stones come in a variety of colors. You can choose what suits your style best.

Comprised of large stones placed in a bed of gravel, these walkways allow you more cre-ativity and flexibility in your yard design. You can place the gravel in any shape you like.

You can also decide whether your walkway will be single-file, or if it will accommodate two people side by side for a leisure-ly stroll. Single file paths are usually used for access around the side of a house, or to a shed, for example.

Lead the WayGarden pathways aren’t about

getting from point A to point B. They’re about enjoying the journey.

Meandering paths through scenic gardens are healthy for you. They help your brain relax. Create peace in your home gar-den by using a curved pathway.

Curving walkways create a sense of calm. They can also help small yards feel larger be-cause they elongate the walking

space. These informal pathways work best when surrounded by lush vegetation. Plants that stand about 6 inches to 1 foot high are a good fit.

Try large, fluffy plants like lavender or mondo grass to help flesh out your serene garden space.

Stay on the Straight and NarrowStraight walkways give off

a more formal vibe. They pair well with colonial style homes and larger yards, though they can work well with any space.

Lean toward plants that you can trim and arrange. Box hedg-es and sculpted topiaries all pair well with the crisp and clean lines of a straight walkway.

To add interest, consider a trellis covered in colorful blooms. Those with larger yards might invest in a water feature or small pond.

Small yard? Setting pavers on a diagonal will elongate the space. You can even grow moss between them for a refined feel.

Choose Your PaletteWhether you decide to cre-

ate a zen garden or a garden inspired by Versailles, it’s im-portant to choose materials that mesh with your theme.

Different shapes, textures, and colors of stone can each give off a different feel. For a cozy sensation, add lots of tex-ture, asymmetrical shapes, and deep, rich color.

Going formal? Try angular,

flat pavers in a neutral shade.Mix It UpSome of the best gardens are

a blend of styles. Try breaking the rules. Mix textures and col-ors (like smooth slate and red brick) for a surprising satisfying pop of color.

Did you know that gravel comes in colors? Pair bright, unconventional colors and pat-terns to amp up your creativity.

By adding a few pavers for walkway, you can transform a garden into a wow-worthy space. There’s no better time than right now to start creating the garden of your dreams.

Well, are you feeling in-spired? No matter the space you have, you can create some-thing awesome! H – ArticleCity

Be The Coolest, Most Energy-Efficient Home

This summer, homeowners don’t have to choose between being cool and eco-conscious. Today’s innovations make it

“no sweat” to enjoy both with smart home climate control technologies and advanced air-conditioning systems creat-ed to achieve maximum ener-gy efficiency and comfort.

Many might be surprised that home cooling accounts for nearly half of home energy use and is responsible for near-ly100 million tons of carbon di-oxide emissions every year. It’s no wonder optimal energy ef-ficiency is a home buyer’s top

“Green Preference,” with nearly half of home buyers willing to invest between $1,000 and $9,999 for a $1,000 annual sav-ings on their utility bills, and 37 percent are willing to spend upward of $10,000, according to the National Association of Home Builders 2019 “What Home Buyers Really Want” Re-port.

With air conditioner energy expenses costing homeowners more than $11 billion a year, a little knowledge can go a long way.

Get “Smart” About Home Climate

When it comes to smart home temperature control, there are Smart HVAC Systems and Smart Thermostats. Smart HVAC sys-tems have built-in Internet ca-pability and can be controlled directly without additional equipment. Smart Home Ther-mostats create “smart” systems by enabling remote tempera-ture control via a mobile or

Internet-connected device or voice-operated home automa-tion system. Several leading manufacturers, including Fujit-su General America, offer Smart Systems as well as a Thermo-stat Converter, which can con-trol their single and multizone Halcyon and Airstage heating and cooling systems using a third-party thermostat.

Amp Up Energy Efficiency, Lower Bills Up to 25 Percent

A system upgrade and a smart home thermostat equals energy savings. The most en-ergy-efficient heating and cool-ing products on the market, ductless mini-split systems, can save as much as 25 per-cent on your utility bill. An efficiently controlled thermo-stat could save an additional 10 percent a year. And profes-sional expertise is key because a system can lose 20 to 40 percent of its energy efficiency from poor installation.

How do mini-splits work? Thin copper tubing is used to pump refrigerant from an out-door compressor directly into an indoor air-handling unit, where the air is quietly distrib-uted to the interior space. This eliminates the need for base-ment or attic evaporators and bulky, expensive ductwork. Mini-splits are easy to install and usually require only a 3- to 4-inch hole through a wall or ceiling to connect the indoor and outdoor units.

Heighten Customization and Convenience

Take individualized com-

fort to new levels. Most HVAC manufacturers offer apps that enable systems to be controlled from anywhere using a mobile device. Now, voice-control capability uses digital assistants to verbal-ly dictate home temperatures

— “Alexa, set the living room temperature to 70 degrees.” For instance, Fujitsu offers a free FGLair app that enables Web-activated control via mo-bile devices and now voice-ac-tivated control via Amazon Alexa and Google Home.

Built for optimal custom-ization, ductless mini-split systems let you control the individual temperature in each room, so you don’t waste money cooling unused spac-es such as guest bedrooms, bonus rooms, sunrooms and basements. Ductless systems operate at much higher ef-ficiency levels than central forced-air systems and win-dow units, as duct losses in a central AC system can account for more than 30 percent of your energy consumption.

Whether you take a “stayca-tion” or kick back at your va-cation home, following some practical tips will help you bask in ultimate comfort while lowering utility bills and re-specting the environment.

Many Fujitsu systems with the Energy Star rating are more than twice as efficient as the minimum standard set by the government. To learn more or find a contractor, call (888) 888-3424 or visit www.constantcomfort.com or www.fujitsugeneral.com. H –NAPSI

For Healthier Eating, Grill More

Planning to follow a trendy diet like keto or simply want to eat right? There’s good news

— grilling can be a great op-tion for you to kickstart eating healthier. Indeed, the Ameri-can Heart Association recom-mends it. “Grilling is a year-round way

of life, bringing together family and friends,” says Jeff Thies-sen, president of Pit Boss Grills.

“Luckily, those watching their

diets can still get healthy foods with the fun and flavor of a backyard barbecue.”

Use these tips to make health-ier meals prepared on the grill:

Let your spices do the heavy lifting: You can add exciting and bold flavor to any recipe using seasoning mixtures. Spice up foods like veggies or lean meats with seasoned rubs or marinades for amazing flavor without all the calories.

Eat fresher: Round out reci-pes by including fresh vegetables. For the best flavor and highest nutritional value, look for local-ly-grown produce. Vegetables make an excellent addition to any meal as grilled kabobs.

Be versatile: A healthy diet is a versatile diet. Look for a grill offering multiple cooking op-tions, including baking, roasting and smoking, such as Pit Boss Grills. Their 8-in-1 versatile

grills allow you to do it all with one-of-a-kind hardwood flavor.

By following the keys to healthy grilling, you can create guilt-free meals. H –StatePoint

Five Swimming Pool Myths That Are All Wet

It’s got all the hallmarks of a great home improvement — adds value, enhances livability and beauty, and creates a per-fect gathering spot for family and friends. So why wouldn’t you add a swimming pool to your outdoor living space?

From the belief that it costs too much to operate a pool to the misconception it will go unused, myths about pool own-ership abound — and they likely dissuade some homeowners from making this valuable home improvement. If you’ve been considering adding a swimming pool to your outdoor environ-ment, here are five common myths that simply don’t hold water:

Myth: Pools are too costly to install.

Reality: A swimming pool is a

significant home improvement investment, there’s no denying it. However, the cost of a pool will depend on many factors, including the size of your yard, the dimensions of the pool and the materials you choose. When compared to other significant discretionary expenditures such as a family vacation — which costs the average family near-ly $4,800 for one week of fun each year — a pool can be a high-value investment that pays for itself in just a few years. Of course, finding the right install-er is key to a positive, cost-ef-fective purchase. The Associa-tion of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) offers an online member locator to help consumers find an APSP Certified Professional in their area.

Myth: It’s difficult and costly

to maintain a pool.Reality: Long gone are the

days when operating a pool pump could cost almost as much as running your central air conditioning during the sum-mer. Pool pumps and filtration systems are more energy effi-cient than ever, saving money on electricity costs. Plus, im-provements in filtration system and purification chemicals mean you’ll need less product to keep a pool sparkling throughout the summer. In fact, when it comes to pool maintenance, 63 percent of pool owners say maintaining correct water chemistry is no trouble at all, according to an APSP survey.

Myth: Pools are not energy efficient.

Reality: Modern pool pumps require much less electricity to operate than you might think. Energy-efficient pumps can use up to 30 percent less power to operate. When compared to other household sources of elec-tricity consumption, swimming pools are a small percentage of a home’s overall energy use. What’s more, these systems can be even more cost effective when solar powered. Accesso-ries can help conserve energy, too. For example, using a solar cover on an in-ground pool when it’s not in use can help the water retain heat and keep debris out of the pool, which

means less work for the filtra-tion system — and you.

Myth: A pool won’t enhance my home’s value.

Reality: Buyers like homes that have swimming pools: Among people who purchased a home with an existing swim-ming pool, an eye-opening 78 percent said the presence of the pool contributed to their deci-sion to buy the house, according to the APSP survey. Depending on where you live, a pool may enhance your home’s appeal to prospective buyers even more

— especially if you live in a re-gion with very hot summers or a year-round temperate climate.

Myth: If we get a pool, we’ll never use it.

Reality: People who own pools say they spend a lot of time in them, and it’s quality time. Seventy-six percent of pool owners say they are ex-tremely or very satisfied with their pools. They also consid-er it a great place for gather-ings, and believe that having a pool entices their family to spend more time together in their own backyards. Owners say they use their pools for relaxation, entertainment, cel-ebrations and exercise, and 96 percent say they are satisfied with their pools. H –BPT

Interior Design Trends On the Horizon

Thinking about refreshing the look of your home? “Cozy” and

“warm” are trending keywords for interior design, according to experts, with luxurious tex-tiles, inviting color palettes, and warm mixed metals found across all design styles.

While a maximalism approach is on the horizon, clean and modern design schemes contin-ue to reign.“Use a minimalist approach,

allowing patterned décor to add pops of color,” advises Eliza Alkire, trend expert and product designer for Progress Lighting.

“Accent this with hanging plant-ers and potted greenery to en-hance the character of any room with an organic look.”

To make the most of your space, consider this design ad-vice from Alkire and the experts at Progress Lighting:

Materials, Shapes and Finishes

While neutral color schemes are tried-and-true, now is the time to turn to an updated pal-ette consisting of warm, earthen undertones. Choose lighting fin-ished in mixed metals to accent the neutral scheme and add visual interest and depth.

Recent years have seen light-ing combine black chrome and

gold finishes. Now, warm tones of natural brass, bronze and copper mixed with silver and black will be found across light-ing designs, cabinet pulls and plumbing hardware. Move over, stainless steel! Just remember to keep the look uncluttered by not mixing more than two or three metals in one space.

Geometric shapes are dominat-ing design trends. Adding light-ing in triangle, diamond, hexago-nal or combination of geometric shapes is one of the easiest ways to transform a space and add wow factor. Make sure to bal-ance statement-making lighting with clean, classic patterns and colors on furnishings and acces-sories.

Create warmth with tactile elements. Luxurious, richly-tex-tured fabrics like velvet, suede and leather work nicely with clean, contemporary interiors as well as rustic farmhouse spaces. Try vibrantly-colored velvets furnishings, pillows and throws. Wallpaper is making a come-back: use it in small areas like powder room walls, or make a splash with a floral accent wall.

Style EvolutionOverall design trends are

evolving. Homes that were previously traditional are now

termed “new traditional” as they take on fun, youthful el-ements that keep the design fresh. Lighting fixtures have mixed metal finishes or are de-signed in new takes on classic silhouettes, such as large lan-terns and chandeliers done in linear shapes.

Mountain style goes beyond a rustic, cabin look to take on a modern form with clean lines, neutral color palettes and un-cluttered interiors. With open layouts and tall ceilings, sweep-ing views command attention. Lighting is oversized, with airy, open designs meant to cast light without obstructing views from the plentiful windows in the space.

For fans of farmhouse style, this look has taken a delightful turn, with fewer rustic details and more modern charm. Sub-tle hues go beyond a white and gray palette into the realm of soft greens and blush pinks. Lighting is inspired by histor-ical design with industrial de-tails like working pulleys, but is combined with clean lines for a relaxed, casual vibe.

To stay on-trend, think cozy, warm and inviting. H –StatePoint

It’s Time to Clean Your FireplaceAfter a long season of use, fireplaces need

to be cleaned. Many homeowners think this is a job that can be put off until the fall, but spring is an ideal season to have the chimney and flue cleaned and inspected. One reason to include scrubbing the chimney as part of spring cleaning is to cut down on odor. After using a fireplace, a buildup of creosote forms in the chimney. As the weather gets warmer, creosote

deposits can start to smell sour and that odor will seep into the home. In addition, moisture can mix with the creosote and start to degrade the flue liner, necessitating costly repairs. The sooner a chimney and flue are cleaned the bet-ter. A chimney sweep can do a thorough job of scrubbing down the chimney and fireplace and ensuring that everything will be in working order come next season. H

Give Your Kitchen a New Look With a Lighting Update

A simple, inexpensive lighting update can completely trans-form your kitchen from dull to dynamite.

According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), good lighting design makes kitchens more functional, as well as more enjoyable, relaxing and suitable for entertaining.“Good lighting is vitally im-

portant in kitchens,” says Jeff Dross, corporate director for education and industry trends for Kichler Lighting. “Perhaps more work in the home is done in the kitchen area than any other room, and having improp-er lighting would be tantamount to candles in a warehouse or flashlights on a factory floor.“Food preparation is a vital,

though sometimes tedious, task performed virtually every day,” Dross continues. “Cooking in a poorly illuminated space only increases the drudgery and the danger. Good lighting adds to the overall space, and increases

the pleasure in using said space.”The very fact that kitchens are

spaces where people spend a lot of time makes them valuable areas when reselling a home, as well. For this reason, many experts agree kitchen renova-tions are among the best ways to boost the value of your home. Along with bathrooms, kitchens are an integral part of the home to virtually everyone.

Unfortunately, when it comes time to updating kitch-ens with a new look, lighting does not always get the atten-tion it deserves. According to Dross, this is to the detriment of home design.“Lighting is as important a de-

sign element as wall coverings, flooring and countertops,” says Dross. “It can make an average kitchen look great and elevate a fabulous design to perfection. Need to increase the visual size of a room without tearing down a wall? Add lighting above the cabinets and at the toe-kick space.

“The importance of good, high lumen output for task (un-der-cabinet) lighting cannot be over emphasized,” Dross adds.

“Wall-mounted cabinets create shadows on countertop work surfaces. The only way to alle-viate those shadows (and the accompanying dark spots on the cutting board) is with un-der-cabinet lighting.”

Another factor to keep in mind relates to energy usage, and by extension, your power bill. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that American consumers use electricity for lighting the kitchen more than any other room in the house. So, to save electricity costs, invest in energy-efficient lighting in the kitchen.

To see the most up-to-date fixtures and shades, and to consult with a professionally trained lighting expert, visit your local ALA-member retail-er, or go online to american-lightingassoc.com. H –NewsUSA

every season, composite deck-ing proves a much better value over time. According to Ho-meAdvisor.com, maintenance for a wood deck costs an aver-age of $540 to $1,050 per year compared with just $15 to $20 for a composite deck.“Today’s homeowners want to

spend their time enjoying their outdoor living spaces — rather than maintaining them,” says Leslie Adkins, vice president of marketing for residential prod-ucts at Trex Company, manu-facturer of composite decking.

“High-performance composite decking stands up to decades of weather and day-to-day usage without the burdensome sand-ing and staining required to

maintain wood decks.”Are composite materials envi-

ronmentally friendly? Wood might be a natural ma-

terial, but the chemical coatings used to protect the wood from rot and mold are not. Compos-ite decking, on the other hand, uses few chemicals in its man-ufacturing and the upkeep is simple — just soap and water. Additionally, Trex decking is made from 95 percent recycled materials, including plastic film recycled from a variety of items, such as grocery bags and news-paper sleeves. The company repurposes more than 400 mil-lion pounds of plastic and wood particles annually that would otherwise end up in landfills.

What’s the difference between “capped” and “uncapped” com-posites?

Early generations of compos-ite decking were “uncapped,” leaving them vulnerable to staining, fading, mold and mil-dew. The leading composite products available today are

“capped” with a protective outer layer that is bonded to the core during the manufacturing pro-cess. This “shell” contains UV inhibitors and other ingredi-ents to ensure the deck boards retain their aesthetics and du-rability. In addition to resist-ing fading, staining and mold, they won’t rot crack or splinter like wood and require minimal maintenance. H –BPT

Upgrade Your Outdoor Living Space

Home improvement projects aren’t limited to indoors. In fact, not only can upgrades to areas outside the house ex-pand your livable space, they can also increase your home’s value.

Outdoor living projects account for almost one-third of renovation projects, according to a survey conducted by the National Association of the Remodel-ing Industry. The findings echo trends reported by the National Kitchen and Bath Association, which found 43% of respondents said they designed outdoor kitchens in the past year and 41% ex-pected an increase in outdoor projects in the coming year. “Our clients are asking for entertaining

areas, which can be anything from a fully engineered cabana or a new paver patio with a pergola,” said Dave Garcia, owner of DPG Pavers and Design. “We love being creative with materials in our designs and installations. One of my personal favorites is an outdoor kitchen we wrapped in hardwood with a gran-ite countertop. It has clean lines and a unique custom look.”

Custom-built and prefabricated kitch-ens are also in high demand, Garcia said, along with recreation features like putting greens, bocce ball and basket-ball courts. Hardscape features that add function and ambiance top many home-owners’ lists, as well. Examples include fire pits and fire tables, as well as water features like fountains, waterfalls, basalt columns and bubbling urns.

Understanding Landscaping Elements

Creating the ideal outdoor living space requires thoughtful planning and a holis-tic approach to landscaping. Typically, when people consider landscaping, they

think of plants and flowers. However, landscaping includes a wide range of elements in an outdoor design that can generally be grouped into two main cat-egories: hardscape and softscape.

Understanding the components and options within each category can help you create a cohesive design for maxi-mum enjoyment.

The hardscape encompasses the man-made elements that bring function and aesthetic appeal to the design. Examples include concrete pavers, natural stone features, seating and retaining walls, wood and composite decks, pergolas, fencing and synthetic lawns.

Softscape elements are the living com-ponents that add beauty and character to your outdoor space. These include the grass, shrubs, trees, flowers and plants. Your softscape may also include en-hancements like mulch and an irrigation system to help care for the vegetation.

Although the hardscape and softscape elements are distinct, an effective land-scape design integrates both to create the look and feel you want for your outdoor living space.

Getting StartedOnce you’ve considered the landscaping

features necessary to bring your vision to life, it’s time to get your project in motion. Set a budget and consider whether you will need professional support to make your design ideas a reality. A remodeling expert can guide you on how to achieve the look you desire with your home’s unique char-acteristics in mind, while helping manage your timeline and expenses.

Zing Up Your Menus With a Tasty Summer

Garnish GardenAs people are spending more time at

home, many are learning new activities and finding simple joy in doing the things they love, such as cultivating their own gardens.

Now is the perfect time to start plan-ning a summer garden that can add fresh flavors to your kitchen all year long. One growing trend is to create delicious and bountiful garnish gardens filled with herbs and produce to serve as the final touch for different food and beverage options. Even experienced gardeners often choose to focus on a few simple, high-in-flavor items that will elevate summer meals and cocktails such as juicy berries, savory herbs and other seasonal produce.

As a bonus, gardening can provide stress relief and a sense of accomplish-ment in a fast-paced and challenging world. According to a 2020 study con-ducted by Fiskars, 46% of people in the U.S. say gardening is beneficial to their overall happiness. In that spirit, here are several tips from Fiskars to prepare and plant a summer garnish garden that will provide all kinds of delicious options for your at-home summer recipes.

Plot Your Growing AreaEvaluate the growing season in your

area and consider which of your outdoor spaces may provide enough sunlight for a viable garden. Depending on your ambition and commitment level, your garden could be as vast as your entire backyard or as simple as a few large pots on your patio or balcony. If you go big, be sure to allot extra time for cultivating, weeding and watering. For your first ven-ture, you may want to start small with a few plants that are easy to shelter, grow and harvest.

Assemble Effective ToolsHaving the right tools on hand is the

best way to prepare to garden, especially if this is your first time putting a garden together. In fact, those who have gar-dened before know just how important this is — according to the same study, 77% of gardeners in the U.S. say having the right tools increases their happiness when gardening. This year, trade in

your old tools for newer, ergonomically designed products that are not only more comfortable but also highly effective. For example, The Fiskars Xact Cultivator is made with deep, curved tines to efficient-ly loosen and aerate soil and a weighted handle for advanced comfort and control. The Xact Trowel can be comfortably gripped from multiple angles to pry through tough turf and dirt clots, and The Xact Hand Edger offers precision control when removing weeds, moss and debris from harder-to-reach places. All are equipped with SoftGrip handles and are perfect for planting herbs and fresh produce.

Choose versatile VarietiesConsider which herbs, fruits and veg-

gies will best contribute to the meals and beverages you like to prepare. For ex-ample, cucumbers or tomatoes can add a refreshing zing to salads and drinks, while rosemary and basil complement a range of both sweet and savory flavors in cocktails, grilled meats, vegetables, soups and salads. Other popular and easy-to-grow herbs include thyme, pars-ley, dill, cilantro and chives. Berry choic-es may include strawberries, raspberries and blackberries — just make sure you have enough room to let these bushy plants grow!

Optimize Your HarvestThere’s nothing as refreshing as the

taste of fresh produce, and being able to incorporate it into meals and tasty treats is one of the best perks of summer. Consider creative presentation ideas, too

— try adding sprigs of rosemary sprinkled into ice cube trays, colorful berries atop summer cocktails or cutting cucumbers or strawberries into multi-petaled roses. You can also set aside ingredients for later; berries can be frozen, tomatoes can be canned and herbs can be dried to season meals throughout the colder months. Saving some of your hard-earned harvest will be sure to remind you of the simple pleasures derived from your own backyard.
