40 ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT For battery carriers see section 34; for magneto and dynamo sprockets see section 14.

Lucas used a comprehensive numbering system, which can be a bit unwieldy at first, but it is worth getting to grips

with. Each type of item (e.g. dynamo) that they produced had a model designation (e.g. E3LM), which can be decoded

and is explained under each section. The 1936-57 Lucas catalogue lists 18 models of dynamos. For most models of

dynamo there are several variants, each of which have their own ordering number even though the difference might be

only one part, this results in 72 different dynamos from those 18 models. The model designation and the ordering

number are invariably stamped onto a major part of the component as well as the month and year of manufacture.

Needless to say, this information is very useful to restorers.

MAGNETO AND DYNAMO REPAIRS We prefer to repair your old unit rather than exchanging it for a reconditioned item as you are only charged for the

necessary work whereas an exchange item will cost the maximum amount. The cost varies considerably depending

upon the parts required but it is rare for the armature to not require replacement. Labour costs, at 1999 prices are £40 to

£60. We strip, clean, reassemble and test the unit before preparing an estimate for the work. After repair, the unit is run

for an hour on our test rig. When overhauling dynamos we prefer to have your control box as well as each control box

should be 'tuned' to the dynamo that it is going to control. Tell us whether you are using negative or positive earth.

Damaged castings and armatures, missing parts and other broken items are replaced if available. All overhauls are

carried out to a high standard and are fully guaranteed.

The direction of rotation of a component is always as viewed from the drive end.

We also become fed up with replacing duff ones. They can be fitted inside an old regulator box but it is a tight fit. Complete with instructions.

TAIL LAMPS The MT110, MT211 and 480 tail lamps did not originally have a stop lamp incorporated, but ours do. The 480

type uses a special stop/tail bulb which is not readily available and as far as we are aware we are the only retailer (or

wholesaler for that matter) that has bothered to find any.

HEADLAMPS 8" diameter headlamps were used up to the war when they were changed to a more economical 6" (with

blackout masks it did not really matter what was under the hood). 7" units were introduced after the war, as supplies became

available. All headlamps up to 1949 have a main bulb holder that is adjustable so that the bulb may be focused, after this date

the 'British Pre-Focus' or BPF bulb was introduced. The earlier bulb we refer to as the 'pre-pre-focus'! The sizes of headlamp

listed below are those given by Lucas and are as measured across the opening in the shell, the 7 1/2" one is more commonly

known as 8".

HORNS AND HORN BUTTONS

1935-48 the horn was centrally mounted on a bracket astride the front engine plates but some photographs around 1946-48

show the horn mounted to the right hand engine plate or sometimes on the right hand saddle spring stud, particularly on twin

port models and SQ4s. There is a bracket listed for the 1948 only KH that fits to the right hand engine plate. From 1949

onwards the horn is hung from a special stud through the left hand saddle spring lug on plunger and rigid models (see section

30). On the swinging arm models the horn was fixed to the bottom tool box bracket. All models used the familiar Alttette

horn up to 1955 when the rather dour HF 1441 was fitted, although the SQ 4 probably continued with the Alttette.

the parts books and are rarely shown on factory pictures it is difficult to be accurate about the applications. For details

see the excellent series of articles written by Jerry Mortimore in the Cheval de Fer (Ariel club magazine) between

September 1993 and February 1994.

COLOUR EQUIVALENTS. These paint colours are close to the original, some have been recommended to us by customers. Remember that the colour would vary from week to week and tank lining could be very different not just from tank to tank but on each side of the same tank! You may be lucky to find original unfaded paint behind a knee grip or inside engine plates. Black was always an option. 1932-49 Red Hunter Red – Vauxhall Monza Red (1968-71) may be a bit dark. 1938-51 Green, usually found as an option on export deluxe models – BMC Reseda Green, very good. 1950-53 Deep Crimson – British Leyland Damask Red, spot on. 1953 Wedgewood Blue, used on VHA, KHA, MK II – 1980 Ford Nordic Blue. (Glasurit FD 358) 1954-58 Deep Claret – use Leyland Hunter Maroon B. 1956-58 Cherokee Red used on HS and with black as ‘export finish’ – 1968 Vauxhall Monza Red.

ENAMEL SIGNS – Not to be confused with inferior screen printed aluminium things, these are the real McCoy. Made from thick,

heavy gauge steel which has been dished (the BSA piled arms one weighs almost 5lbs and it’s not the biggest)! The design

applied using vitreous enamel, which is the process used to make the originals, which now fetch astronomic prices, where

coloured glass is melted onto the surface in a furnace. Some even have the design embossed into the surface, for instance the

‘Shell’ one is not only in the shape of a shell but is ribbed like one as well! They are not small or cheap but you will not be

disappointed, check out the dimensions given in inches. These are masterpieces that should last a lifetime and are ideal for

decorating the workshop or house wall. Visit our web site at draganfly.co.uk for colour pictures. Portrait means rectangular with

long side vertical; landscape means rectangular with the long side horizontal.

42 STANDARD NUTS, WASHERS ETC.

Most fine threads on Ariel four strokes are to standards laid down by the Cycle Engineers Institute (CEI),

usually known as 'cycle thread', which is usually 26 threads per inch (TPI) for all sizes but some manufacturers, like

Ariel, used 20 TPI for 1/2" threads and above. The other popular fine thread is BSF or British Standard Fine, which is

not so fine as cycle except for 1/4" when it is the same. BSF was used by Ariel in a few locations e.g. 1953 onwards

side stand pivot bolt and for some strange reason VB and MK II SQ 4 head bolts. BSW (British Standard Whitworth) or

Whit is the coarse thread usually only found in aluminium alloy. Ariel switched to UNF (Unified Fine) and UNC

(Unified Coarse) for the Leader and Arrow but that as they say is another story, or catalogue. Unified fastenings are the

ones that use Imperial AF spanners; AF by the way stands for 'Across Flats' so metric spanners are also AF. All cycle

nuts supplied by us are 'machine nuts' instead of being forged. This method both produces a more original item as well

as a stronger one. We offer a discount of 10% on purchases of 50, or 20% for a purchase of 100 or more of one type of

nut or washer.

43 SCREWS, STUDS, BOLTS AND TIE STUDS Most of the items listed below have many applications, most, but not all of which are listed on the

preceding pages. Other uses will be found in your parts book. All dimensions are in fractions of an inch. CEI as

explained in section 42 is Cycle Engineers Institute thread. WHIT stands for British Standard Whitworth, which is the

coarse thread usually, used where a fastening threads into aluminium and for some strange reason, petrol tanks. BA is

British Association thread commonly found on electrical fittings and carburetters. The list is arranged in order of

diameter then length so that if you require a fastening of a known dimension its part number can be readily ascertained.
