spoken language of these tradersand Saint Thomas was Aramaic, it isbelieved that Saint Thomas wonmany adherants to His master's Gos-pel.

St. Thomas was mar-tyred in Mylapore, near

Chennai on the southeastcoast of India. The tomb of the Apostle very quickly be-came a centre of pilgrimage

The Christian com-munity founded by St. Thomas theApostle is locally known in Malabar as the Mar Thoma Nasrani. Anequivalent, though not exact, trans-lation of this Syriac phrase to Eng-lish is Saint Thomas Christian.

The commercial, culturaland linguistic relation between an-cient Persia and India, along withthe St. Thomas connection of theChurches of Persia and India pavedthe way for close partnership in hi-erarchy and liturgy. The spice culti-vating Christians of Malabar and thespice trading Christians from Persiadeveloped a very strong bond witheach other. The rapport betweenthese two groups encouraged moreChristian traders from Persia tocome to India and with them camemany priests and bishops too. Thishelped the Church in Malabar toremain in good relation with thePersian Church.

The Christian community inMalabar eventually developed amodel of self-governance under anative leader, who was known as theArchdeacon. The Archdeacon wasthe religious, social, communal andpolitical leader of the St. ThomasChristians. All the Archdeacons we

know of were also priests. In later centuries, the community is de-scribed as a 'Christian Republic'.The bishops for the most part exer-cised the power of order only.

The native Churches of thePersian Empire and the East followthe East-Syrian liturgical rite. Theyare collectively referred to as theEast Syrian Church. The names likePersian Church, Church of the East

are also used for this Church. The East-Syrian rite devel-

oped mostly outside the influence of the Greek culture of the Roman Em-

pire. In the Persian Empire, Christi-anity was first preached among theJewish communities of Mesopota-mia (the area in and around modernIraq). The liturgical language, East-Syriac (Aramaic), and thought cate-gories, of the East-Syrian rite origi-nate from this connection to theJews of Mesopotamia. The Jewslived among Assyrians and Persian(Iranian) cultures. Therefore, theEast-Syrian rite is the product of fusion between Judeo-Christianityand the pagan cultures of the Assyr-ians and Persians. However, the pre-dominant element of this fusion wasJudeo-Christianity.

The East Syrian Church, alsoknown as the Catholic (Universal)

Church of the East gradually grewinto a multi-ethnic Church stretch-ing from ancient Mesopotamia toChina, passing through Arabia, In-dia, Tibet and Central Asia.

When traders from Portugalcame from 1498 AD onwards, therewere also Roman Catholic mission-aries accompanying them. Relation

between Mar Thoma Nasranis andPortuguese in the early years (until

AD 1550s) of their visits wefriendly since the Portuguese had tdepend on the Nasranis for reasons otrade and military help. Gradually th

power and influence of Portugal increased in India and they demande

power on the churches of Mar Thom Nasranis, thinking that they coulgain control on the spice trade. Portuguese managed to get support of thKing of Kochi as well, a Kingdomthat had supported them for severacenturies. As a result Portuguese missionaries held a meeting in 1599 ADwhich they call "Udayamperoor Sunhados". The so-called Sunhados declared the authority of Portuguesover the Church of Saint ThomaChristians and appointed a Bishop oPortuguese origin to govern the Mala

bar Church. Thus the Portuguecolonised the Church of Malabar thahas apostolic origin. Fearing the crue

inquisition chambers and lack of sup port from even local Kings, thfailed to respond to the Portuguesthreat. The unfortunate divisions andecay of the Saint Thomas Christian

began from this point onwards. Sincthen it was unfortunate events anfurther divisions among the SainThomas Christians.

By the end of sixteenth cetury the Portuguese had control of a

major ports in Persia too. The officials inharbours of Persia were given instructionsto block Bishops heading for India. Theorder was strictly executed and it was nolonger possible to get Bishops from CoE.Even after the so-called Sunhados of Udayamperoor, the Saint Thomas Chris-

tians were united under the leadership of Arkadiyaokkan. Unlike the bishops fromCoE who were only spiritual leaders, theLatin bishops began to forcefully exercisepolitical and social authority on Mar Thoma Nasranis thereby reducing the free-dom of Arkkadiyokkan and his assembly(Palli Yogam). Several Latin traditionswere imposed on the Nasranis. Celibacy of priests, introduction of statues, Latinisationof liturgy etc. are few among them.

Fifty years after the Sunhados of Udayamperoor, Nasranis revolted againstthe Portuguese in 1653 AD. This is an im-portant event in the history of Nasranis. However, the events after the revolt werenot positive; Nasranis split into two fac-tions and in the later centuries into manymore denominations. At present they aredivided into seven denominations.

The attempts of the Latin mission-aries to dominate and latinise the ApostolicNasrani community of Malabar eventuallyresulted in numerous divisions and gradualdecay of the Nasrani's ancient way of lifeand their liturgical practices (East Syriacrite).

The Syro-Malabar Church is thelargest denomination of the Nasrani com-munity. This Church is struggling againstLatinisation while desperately clinging onto whatever is remaining of the ancientEast Syriac rite that was once common toall Mar Thoma Nasranis. They did not con-tinue the historical position of Arkadiyok-kan, the title that once reflected their prideand independence of Nasranis. The Syro-

Malabar Church is in communion with theLatin Church of Rome. The Latin hierarchyprevents the Church from establishing newdioceses or even provide pastoral care to itsmigrants outside the proper territory whichis mostly limited to Kerala. This is the fateof a Church with Apostolic origins andwhose Metropolitans and Archdeaconsonce had the Titles of 'Director of the Seeof Saint Thomas' and 'Archdeacon of AllIndia' respectively!

is regrettable that the ancient and abiding roles of thePatriarchs of the Eastern Patriarchal Churches does notappear to have been acknowledged or included in the pro-

posed constitution of this council of cardinals. It is not suf-ficient that a patriarch be offered the cardinalate so as to haveaccess to the Bishop of Rome when he wishes to express con-cerns for his own Patriarchal Church. The patriarchs share aspecial bond with the Bishop of Rome whose ministries of witnessing and building unity for all the Churches is exercisedas a supreme authority under Peter according to the canons of the Eastern and Western codes. Patriarchal Churches and their synodal governments are ancient while the vigilance exercised

by a permanent council of cardinals cannot be said to be so,nor historically intended. The Universal Church is after allconstituted East and West. The Latin Church alone is not theUniversal Church so why the omission of patriarchs? Collegi-ality is nowhere more historically evident and supremely rele-vant than in relation to the Eastern Churches Catholic and Or-thodox.

Collegiality is of the constitutional nature of the Uni-versal Church. The Eastern Catholic Churches should func-tion within an authentic autonomy, unhindered and un-mediated in their relationship to the Bishop of Rome in hisexercise of the Petrine ministry. Patriarchs, eparchs and syn-ods legitimately exercise their pastoral care as shepherds of the flock entrusted to them by Christ. This exercise of the tri-munera by patriarchs and eparchs should not be exercised or understood as a concession under the vigilance of a Romandicastery. They exercise catholic and apostolic ministry estab-lished and willed by Christ.

The acknowledgement of the importance of Patriar-chal Churches is long overdue in the Universal Church andmay hold the possibility to re-invigorate ancient customs andcanons of the Eastern Churches. Were the importance and ex-ercise of Patriarchal Churches to be restored within the Uni-versal Church in relation to the Bishop of Rome as SupremePontiff new legislation could be drafted and inserted into the

codes of canon law of the East and West. Such a restorationmay hold great ecumenical opportunities for the EasternCatholic Churches in their relations to the OrthodoxChurches. In a decade that has seen savage attacks upon an-cient Patriarchal Churches who have witnessed to Christ for centuries by their rich and diverse theological traditions aclearer and stronger voice would be welcome. There is a richtheology of marriage and its pastoral care that could also givenuance to our own Western practices. It is to be hoped that theconciliar teaching contained in Orientalium ecclesiarum will

be re-examined in this Year of Faith so that the theologicaland liturgical treasury of all the Churches may be rediscov-ered.
