President’s Report As we go thru uncharted and strange times, it’s reassuring and healthy to have some familiarity in our lives. opportunity) this is not a Columbus Fire organi-zation, it is a CENTRAL OHIO RETIRED FIREFIGHTERS organization. Our board is ded-icated to reaching out to all of our fire depart-ments to help us grow. But we need all of our voices to welcome everyone. So, if you know a retired FF who either doesn’t attend or does not feel welcome, please reach out to them, or reach out and I will contact them. We are a great team, but think how much greater it could be if each of us reach out and welcome all of our 4u Brothers and Sisters. I want to thank our members for giving me the opportunity and responsibility to lead this great team. Feel free to call me or e-mail or text me with anything. Chances are I won’t have the an-swers (lol) but I’ll find the person who does. That’s called teamwork. Please stay safe, enjoy retirement and I’ll see you at the next 4 Unit meeting. David Williamson President 4 Unit

Hello, I hope everyone is well and your families are flourishing. Our August meeting was held on the 5th at L-67 and considering everything, attend-ance was good. New rosters that will be in effect for 2 years should be going to the printers any day now. We voted on surviving spouses becom-ing lifetime members, was approved. The Muse-um is open and received little vandalism during the recent protests downtown. Bill Balthaser has resigned as V.P. as he wants to step away and enjoy his time. The Executive board discussed and voted to CANCEL the picnic at Buckeye Lake in September which includes a 4U meeting in September due to the resurgence of the Coro-na virus. Dave Roggencamp was nominated for the V.P. and was unanimously accepted as such. Congratulations! Continue visiting our website for further updates and info as we move forward. Respectfully, David Williamson

NOTE: The Firefighters Memorial Sunday to be held on October 4, 2020 has been cancelled.

GOOD AND WELFARE—August 2020 Sick List Cliff Sharpe Gerald Walker Bill Mason - Home Terry Foor Gary Littleton Tom Green - Hospice at Home

Job 29:1–6 (NRSV) — 1 Job again took up his discourse and said: 2 “O that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me; 3 when his lamp shone over my head, and by his light I walked through darkness; 4 when I was in my prime, when the friendship of God was upon my tent; 5 when the Almighty was still with me, when my children were around me; 6 when my steps were washed with milk, and the rock poured out for me streams of oil! Wow! Sounds like what many are saying now. We are hearing that getting back to “normal” (months of old, as Job says) will not happen soon and may not happen at all. Old, retired firefighters already lament the loss of the “good old days” and now even in retirement we grieve more. Our last couple of meetings were scarce in numbers. We disdain masks. It takes effort to not shake hands. Alas, times are differ-ent. Yet in the midst of all this God is still God. God is the great “I AM”. We, self includ-ed, need to be reminded and to remind others that God is with us even now. The one certainty we can cling to is that God is always in the midst of whatever we find ourselves involved with. We look back as we look forward. From crea-tion to the day of resurrection God is the under-lying sovereignty of history. Take heart, have faith, and this too shall pass. We will persist and yes, it is OK to lament, grovel and grouse about the present – God hears our cries. Peace be upon you. Chaplain Baker

RESCUE AND FIREHOUSE MEMORIES

The book talks about how the fire department was ran; different fires and rescues; training; his-tory of fires, past and present; and the danger of the job, along with a lot of funny stories in and around the fire department. CAPTAIN LEE CURRY had more than thirty-five years in the fire service. He has made nu-merous rescues and saved a lot of lives. He served on one of the busiest rescues and was on the bomb squad for twenty-five years. He has done about every job in the fire department. Captin Curry started as a crash rescue crew member in the USAF. After discharge, he was a firefighter on the Newark and Columbus (Ohio) Fire Departments. When he started in the old fire department, the equipment was a lot different than it is today and has now moved on to a more modern depart-ment.

We sang “My Favorite Things” from Sound of Music to a 99 year lady at a party at our con-do. Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting, Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings. Bundles of magazines tied up in string. These are a few of my favorite things. Cadillacs and cataracts and hearing aids and glasses, Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses, pacemakers, gold carts and porches with swings, These are a few of my favorite things. REFRAIN: When pipes leak, When the bones creak, When the knees go bad, I simply re-member my favorite things, and then I don’t feel so bad. Hot tea and crumpets, and corn pads for bunions, No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions, Bathrobes and heat pads and hot meals they bring, These are a few of my favor-ite things. Back pains, confused brains and no fear of sinnin’, Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinning’, And we won’t mention our short shrunken frames, When we remember our fa-vorite things. REFRAIN: When the joints ache, when the hips break, When the eyes grow dim, Then I remember the great life I’ve had, and then I don’t feel so bad. Hope you enjoyed this as much as we did!

When I was a kid, I wanted to be old-er… This stuff now is not what I ex-pected it to be!!!

CONFUSERS? Is it good if a vacuum really sucks? Why is the third hand on a watch called a second hand? If a word is misspelled in the dictionary, how would you ever know? If Webster wrote the first dictionary, where did he find the words? Why do we say somethings out of whack? What is whack? Why does “slow down” and “slow up” mean the same thing? Why does “fat chance” and “slim chance” mean the same thing? Why do “tug” boats push barges? Why do we sing “Take me out to the ball game when we are already there? Why are they called “stands” when they are made for sitting? Why is it called “after dark” when it really is after light? Why are a “wise man” and a “wise guy” opposites? Why is “phonics” not spelled the way it sounds? Why do you press harder on the buttons of the remote control when you know the bat-teries are dead? Why do we wash bath towels when we are clean when we use them?
