4 Tips to Become a Better Programmer
Mahatma Ghandi once said, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow.
Learn as if you were to live forever.”
No one can ever claim perfection of their craft. There is always
something to learn.
If you think you’ve hit your plateau, then you have nowhere to go
but down from there. And down you will travel because no one
can stay stagnant.
You’ll be astounded at how other people pass you up on the hill
next to yours though. They’ll reach incredible heights; don’t you want to be a part of that?
There is Always More Here are a few ideas to help you through those moments when you think you’ve learned everything
there is to know about programming. There’s always a way to improve.
First, take on a tutor position. Sometimes the best way to get new ideas is to help someone that still has
a fresh approach to programming.
They may not have the know-how that you do, but they still have creative solutions that you may not
have thought of. You can often learn more from the people you tutor than they will ever learn from you.
Take on a student or two to help you overcome the rut you will likely find yourself in at one point or
another. You’ll feel great about what you’re doing too.
A Second Language Second, learn another programming language. Find a language so different from the ones you know that
you actually have to work to remember how to use it.
Different languages offer different approaches to
problems that you may have never thought of before.
By embracing the new program, you embrace a whole
new way of thinking about the world.
That new perspective will help you to grow in the
languages you know best. On top of that you instantly
become more marketable because of your ability to
work in another language.
Invite a Mentor In Third, seek out the tutelage of a coach or expert in the field. The world is too big for you to be the very
best at what you do.
There’s always someone better than you. Josh
Groban still takes vocal lessons.
LeBron James still takes advice and help from
other pros, past and present. It’s only natural to
seek out the help of a more experienced
individual.
You’ll be surprised at how many people are
willing to tutor a willing mind and capable
person. Start networking immediately to get
yourself in a position to ask for one-on-one
tutelage.
Just Have Fun Fourth, create a program for fun. When was the last time you made a program to solve a need you had?
When was the last time you remember really enjoying the challenge of creating something from
nothing? Get an idea of what to do, and create something for yourself that helps your life.
You’ll run into a number of unique challenges that will help you grow. On top of that, you might even be
able to sell the product you make.
These are just four suggestions to help you get out that rut and improve your abilities. Explore other
options and educational options to help you never stop improving.
