Structural Analysis: Inflections: -s, -es

Look at these words and listen to me read them out loud: robot/robots lunch/lunches fox/foxes

mess/messes wish/wishes mystery/mysteries

Notice for each pair of the above words:•The endings –s and –es are added to many words to create the plural form.•The ending –es is added to words that end in sh, ch, ss, s, x, or z to make a plural. The ending –es forms its own syllable when it follows a consonant.•In words that end in consonant + y, the y changes to i when adding –es. Although the spelling changes, the vowel sound stays the same.

Look back through “The Case of the Too-Hot Apple Cider” and “Sequoyah’s Talking Leaves” and find 6 singular

nouns. Write these in your journal. Then make each noun a plural noun by adding –s or –es. Be ready to read each

plural noun that you wrote.
