Unit 4 Review Activity Honors Biology

Explain how ATP/ADP store and release energy. Draw a diagram and indicate where the energy is stored/lost from.

Complete the following table comparing and contrasting ATP and glucose as sources of chemical energy.

ATP Both Glucose

Discuss how both of the above types of chemical energy are involved in photosynthesis and cellular respiration.

Cellular respiration

● ATP

● Glucose

Photosynthesis

● ATP

● Glucose

Unit 4 Review Activity Honors Biology

Draw the energy diagram for photosynthesis and cellular respiration. For each, discuss what kind of reaction is being described in terms of the energy levels of the reactants and products.

Explain how the above energy diagrams relate to the diagram below and how the two reactions relate to one another.

Unit 4 Review Activity Honors Biology

● The electron transport chain in cellular respiration

occurs in the inner membrane of the mitochondria and the light dependent reactions occur in the thylakoid (extensions of the inner membrane) of the chloroplast. Compare and contrast these two reactions in terms of their reactants, products and overall purposes.

● The Krebs cycle takes place in the matrix of the mitochondrion while the Calvin cycle takes place

in the stroma of the chloroplast. Compare and contrast these two reactions in terms of their reactants, products and overall purposes.

Unit 4 Review Activity Honors Biology

Summarize the data that is being displayed by the graph below.

Identify the wavelength of light that would maximize the rate of photosynthesis for a plant (assuming all three pigments were present). Support your answer with evidence from the graph and explain your reasoning in terms of the reactions of photosynthesis.

● 420 nm

● 470 nm

● 550 nm

● 690 nm

Explain why is is an advantage for a plant to have carotenoid pigments in its leaves even though they are not as numerous as chlorophyll a and b.

Unit 4 Review Activity Honors Biology

Predict what would occur to the rate of glucose formation in each of the following scenarios. For each prediction, explain your reasoning in terms of the reactions of photosynthesis.

● A plant shuts it stomata on a hot, dry day to avoid losing water.

● An early frost occurs and damages leaf tissue.

● You place a plant that is adapted to shade in a location that received direct sun all day.

● A toxic chemical is sprayed on the plant that inhibits NADP+ from picking up electrons

during the light dependent reactions.

Unit 4 Review Activity Honors Biology

Evaluate the above diagram.

● What important molecules are not represented?

● Where and how might you add these molecules to the diagram to improve the diagram?

● Explain the relevance of these reactants in the overall process.

Use the diagram above to explain each of the following scenarios.

● Shivering on a cold day helps increase your body temperature.

● You take an hour-long jog, maintaining a consistent pace.

● Maintaining a wall-sit becomes increasingly painful the longer you hold the position.

Unit 4 Review Activity Honors Biology

For each of the following scenarios, predict what you would need to do to manipulate the above process.

● You want to make bread that is dense and flat, rather than light and fluffy.

● You are producing an alcoholic beverage that needs to be carbonated.

Calculate the rate that each hand was able to open and close. Compare the rates and explain the results of the below graph in terms of lactic acid fermentation.

● Dominant hand → SQUARE

● Non-dominant hand → DIAMOND
