Library morning tea well supported Before you even get into the main part of Harvey Library, there is a range of resources in the foyer that are available for anyone to use. Hundreds of romance paperbacks are available for free swapping, and a table of good quality second hand books are available for purchase for a small donation. Jigsaws can be borrowed from a shelf full of dozens of interesting pictures including scenery, animals and even ‘puzzle’ jigsaw puzzles. And an ever- changing display of pamphlets about topics ranging from organ donation to teenagers to digital TV is supplemented by notices on the board about local activities and information. Inside the library the bulk of library stock is extended by a Quick Pick trolley of easy reads, a selection of new popular magazines, displays of fiction and non-fiction recently received at the library, and DVDs, audio books, toys and games. If you can’t find what you want on the shelves, there are more books in the library store out the back, or books can be ordered in from the state wide stock of 2 million items through the free inter-library loan system. Residents who haven’t visited the library recently are invited to come along to investigate what is available, including resources (as above), activities (Computers for absolute beginners, storytime and rhyme time etc) and services (including photocopying, faxing, laminating and wifi.) Ruth Campbell-Hicks Principal Librarian About 50 people attended the Biggest Morning Tea at the Harvey Library last Thursday that raised more than $400 for the Cancer Council. Local residents enjoyed the social side of the fundraiser and mixed with Harvey Shire Council staff who turned out in numbers to support the worthy cause. Principal Librarian Ruth Campbell-Hicks had held the event for some years and was grateful for local businesses Parton’s IGA, Super IGA, Eureka Bakery, Stirling Cottage, Panetta’s Fruit Market and Westpac Bank who donated slices, cakes and fruit for a delicious morning tea. A highlight of the morning was the auction of a stylish handbag that caused much laughter and friendly banter between the guests before Gwen Palmer stepped up the bidding and made the deal. People thoroughly enjoyed themselves and many Library users, who could not attend, generously dropped their donations at the Library throughout the week. • Harvey Shire Environmental Health Officer Juliet Madzvimbo, Administration Officer Carmella Ingrilli, Trainee Building Surveyor Evan Dilley, Town Planner Corey Smith and Community Development Officer Gemma Boucher supported the good cause. • Library Officer Glenda Grieve showed off the handbag for auction to Tony Fantasia, Sue McGrath, Meg Sowden and Marg Hill. Three of the winners were presented with a booklet containing all the poems contributed at a ceremony in the Harvey Library last Thursday. Harvey Shire has a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan and during Disability Awareness Week last December the Council launched a poetry competition aimed at raising awareness of people with disabilities. There were 48 entries and some amazing poems. Winners were: Adult section – Ruth Hancock (runner- up Elizabeth Narkle and people’s choice Michael Roneburg). 8 Years and under – My Best Friend - also people’s choice (runner-up Naomi Tupaea). 9-11 Years – Kashlyn Sullivan (runner-up and people’s choice Teagan Scaffidi) 12-14 Years – Matthew Germs (runner- up Jasmine Sullivan and people’s choice Kaitlyn Rae). 15-17 Years – Sabrina Davies (runner-up and people’s choice Aliesha Sharp). The poems are on view at the Shire libraries. Poetry competition winners announced CAT STERILISATION VOUCHERS A reminder that the Harvey Shire is once again offering a cat sterilisation subsidy programme which is available to all residents of the Shire of Harvey who are interested in having their cat sterilised. The programme has been operating successfully since 2001. A maximum of 2 Cat Sterilisation Vouchers, are available per household. Vouchers and further information can be obtained during normal office hours of 9.00am to 4.00pm (Monday – Friday) at either; Harvey Administration Office, 102 Uduc Road, Harvey, Phone: 9729 0300.
