2.1. NEWS WRITINGNinoy Aquino’s 7 acts of defianceBy Joker P. Arroyo

Six acts of defiance, one of which ended in the death of a man, sparked a seventh, which started the rebirth of a democracy. In 1972, when the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos contemptuously padlocked Congress and the media, placed the entire country under martial rule and ordered the arrest of opposition leaders and journalists, it would have been most expedient for Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. to simply collaborate with the dictator.

First actMarcos was just waiting for that. But Ninoy, the most prominent among the

arrested oppositionists, flatly refused. So Marcos ordered him tried on false charges of rebellion, murder and illegal possession of firearms by a military commission, under the rules and procedures that govern court-martial proceedings for officers and soldiers.

That started Ninoy’s defiance of Marcos and a war of attrition between the tormentor and the tormented. It was a battle of wills all the way.

In his first act of defiance, Ninoy challenged the jurisdiction and independence of Military Commission No. 2, composed of generals and colonels appointed by Marcos.

2.2. SPORTS WRITINGEagles repeat over WarriorsBy Jasmine W. Payo

Kiefer Ravena flashed his old murderous form in the clutch as Ateneo dealt University of the East another heartbreaker with a 78-73 decision to reclaim the solo lead in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament yesterday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Ravena drained five of the Blue Eagles’ last seven points, including a dagger triple with 14.2 seconds left that gave them a four-point cushion, 76-72, on the way to their seventh win in nine games.

“I told Kiefer you have to up the ante for us to win this game. In the end, he again delivered,” said coach Bo Perasol after his Eagles rebounded from a loss to rival La Salle, 86-88.

2.2. FEATURE WRITINGExcellent roast suckling pig, outstanding ‘lapu-lapu’

By Clinton Palanca

The stretch of Chino Roces Avenue (Pasong Tamo), along Don Bosco Makati, has become an unlikely hotspot for restaurants.

We couldn’t help notice one with a brightly lit sign, Lucky Rainbow Shark’s Fin and Seafood Restaurant. It raised the improbable hope that Makati might have a Chinese dining place of its own, finally.

Greenhills has the monopoly on gaudy, palace-style Chinese restaurants, three of them within walking distance from one another. Not that people there  want to walk; they wait patiently for their chauffeur-driven SUVs (with plate numbers ending in 168 or 888) to drive them 50 meters down the road and then decant from the vehicle in slow motion.

2.4. EDITORIAL WRITINGThe blame game

By Ma. Francesca Santiago

I am a kid who is wrapped up in typical teenager things, and as such, I am not fond of keeping with the trends in politics. To be frank, I see politics as not a race or competition, as most people do, but as a downward spiral that leads to nothing but graft, corruption, and our favorite, controversy. At least, that’s what it looks like in the Philippines. But recently, it has been sparking my interest.

The tidal wave of hatred for President Aquino has been alarming me lately. I got home from school a few days ago to the news that several groups have moved for his impeachment. This piece of news surprised me, to say the least. What did he do wrong this time?

To those groups, apparently, absolutely everything—from his bachelor status to his smoking habit to the Priority Development Assistance Fund to the Disbursement Acceleration Program, to even natural calamities—can get P-Noy impeached.

In my opinion, people are getting desperate. With everything that has happened in the recent past—the pork barrel scam, “Yolanda,” “Glenda”—we are starting to fear for the future of our country. We are scared. We need a way out. How do we do this? How do we escape? We look for people to blame
