These five little pug puppies (puglets, if we may) were all suffering from demo- dectic mange, and unfortunately their breeder could not afford the costs of their treatment. They were brought to 4 Luv of Dog Rescue, and we were happy to take care of them. As many dog lovers may already know, mange is a skin disease brought on by the overpopulation of parasitic mites. The presence of such mites on a household pet is extremely common–they live in the hair follicles of most dogs without any issues. It is however, when a dog’s immune system becomes compromised, due to illness, un- healthy living situations, stress or the like, that these mites are able to multiply in large numbers, result- ing in mange. Symptoms typically appear about a week after onset and can include hair loss, bald spots, scabbing, sores, intense itch- ing and even loss of appetite. Left untreated, mange can even become life threatening. When the puglets came to us, most of their fur was missing. Luckily for Mohawk, Ivy and their siblings, we were able to treat their mange and get their glossy coats back. To begin, it was off to the vet. The pups were then prescribed a daily oral medicine, special shampoo and frequent baths. Soon after we began their treatment plan, they re- sponded and have been improving in leaps and bounds since. Results were seen in as little as a week’s time! They’ve been taken to the vet for check ups every 30 days to mark their progress. All this could not have been done without the help of all their fans, Continued on page 2 Gizmo Gladys Ivy
