Nagpur 15 March, 2017 Nagpur: Mahatma Gandhi has made several references to Shrimad Rajchandra in his autobiography ‘The Story of My Experiments with Truth’ and has called him a ‘refuge.’ Play ‘Yugpurush — Ma- hatma Ke Mahatma’ at- tempts to showcase Gand- hi’s bonding with his spiri- tual guru and his journey from being Mohandas to Ma- hatma. Hindi adaptation of the original Gujarati pro- duction was staged at Dr Va- santrao Deshpande Hall on Tuesday evening. The play begins with Gandhi reaching his ash- ram after being discouraged by volunteers to attend a prayer service for security reasons. “Body is temporal but God is forever,” replies Gandhi, enacted by Dars- han Mahajan. On insistence of follo- wers, Gandhi narrates his spiritual journey from being Mohan to Mahatma. “I’ve met many spiritual gurus. But Ramchandraji’s state- ments touch my heart,” he adds. His charkha and a cus- hioned seat are the only props on stage, and the back- drop is the ashram doorway. Scene two: A young Gandhi, from his days as a barrister from England, co- mes on stage, played by In- drajeet Soni. From this mo- ment onward, past and the present are juxtaposed on the stage. The narrative is smooth and the elaborate backdrops keep changing with a single slide, without needing to draw curtains or creating a blackout. Ram- chandra’s character as a po- et and trader is drawn out, enacted by Henish Kharwar. It shows a calm man who can perform 100 tasks at the same time, who can remem- ber fifty words at one go and is a humanitarian at heart. Gandhi continues corre- spondence with him after le- aving Mumbai. The play asks several qu- estions — can religion and trade go hand in hand? Is re- ligion practised only on cer- tain days? Why are there so many religions? Is shatavd- han, being attentive to 100 things at once, possible? The play shows the young and old Mahatma coming toget- her to share the story of his guru; in one scene, under the same spotlight. The depiction of all cha- racters is brilliant, but one wonders if what is depicted about Rajchandra is factual or a mechanism of glorify- ing the spiritual guru. The play has its mo- ments of comedy. But some bits appear preachy, like a lot of information waiting to be unleashed on the audi- ence. Written by Uttam Ga- da, the play is directed by Ra- jesh Joshi, who has refined the narrative into a smooth and flowing bouquet of sce- nes. The music, composed by Sachin-Jigar, is intrigu- ing and engaging. The play, staged by Shri- mad Rajchandra Mission, Dharampur, has completed 240 shows in over 65 cities. Three shows of the play will be held on March 15 at 1pm, 4pm and 8pm at Dr Vasant- rao Deshpande Hall. the researcher said, “We aretaught that Vasco Da Gamadiscovered India. But, ac-cording to Vishnu Wakad-kar, a researcher who studi-ed history in London, foundin a book written by VascoDa Gama himself that hewas led by an Indian traderto India by towing his ship.”

Alkari emphasized thatthe ships built in India werefour times bigger than thosein Europe. Most of the Indi-an-made ships were used bythe European traders. He al-so said that the Indian shipswere not only bigger in sizebut were developed as la-vish royal and strong warfa-

re carriers.“After the 13th century,

the navy of India did not ex-ist on a large scale for at le-ast 400 years. Even the migh-ty Mughal kings had to paytaxes to Portugal if they hadto go to Mecca,” said Alkari.

“Chhatrapati ShivajiMaharaj was the first Indi-an king who created a supe-rior naval force and advan-ced his reach in the seas.Such was the power thateven Portugal and the Bri-tish feared the navy of Shi-vaji,” added Alkari.

The naval forces of India‘died’ because of the Britishcolonial rule.
