ENIGMA VARIATIONS

German cellist Jan Vogler returns to perform the deeply spiritual Schelomo by ernst Bloch, one of the masterpieces of the cello repertoire. Schelomo – the Hebrew name for Solomon – is represented by the cello, and the work draws its inspiration from passages in the Book of Ecclesiastes. the mood is considerably more varied in the second half when lan Shui conducts elgar’s Enigma Variations, a work of enduring popularity loved as much for the musical riches, as for the witty portrayals of “my friends pictured within”. the concert opens with a symphonic poem by the 20-year-old rachmaninov to which was attached this enigmatic couplet by lermontov: “the golden cloud slept through the night /upon the breast of the giant-rock.”

HAYDN’S SINFONIA CONCERTANTE

the SSo returns to its home, the newly refurbished VcH, for this concert. Haydn is believed to have composed his one and only Sinfonia Concertante – a charming yet virtuosic work for violin, cello, oboe and bassoon – in a mere few weeks between February and march 1792, during his second london season. in stark contrast, Brahms took far longer with his First Symphony – more than 20 years – so awed was he at treading the same ground as his illustrious predecessor Beethoven. despite a troubled premiere, it quickly gained popularity and renown, earning the famous comment from critic eduard Hanslick, “Brahms’ artistic kinship with Beethoven must be plain to every observer.”

Shostakovich’s final symphony, the Fifteenth, has long been an enigma to critics and audiences, particularly in the obvious, repeated quotes in the first movement from rossini’s William Tell Overture. the spotlight also falls on Glazunov’s seldom-performed First Piano Concerto, which consists of a lyrical, melancholic first movement followed by a set of variations, each with a distinctive character and flavour. it was during his late years that liadov composed the fragment From the Apocalypse for a tone-poem to be based on russian folklore. Sadly, the full work would remain uncompleted at his death.

25-year-old taiwanese-australian violinist ray chen, winner of the Queen elisabeth (2009) and yehudi menuhin competitions (2008), joins Günther Herbig and the SSo for mendelssohn’s last large orchestral work, the Violin Concerto in E minor. one of the first of the great romantic violin concertos, it has been enduringly popular since its 1845 premiere. German maestro Günther Herbig will also conduct Shostakovich’s lesser heard Eighth Symphony of 1943. together with the Seventh, Shostakovich considered both symphonies his requiems for those who had suffered during the war.

kam ning and albert tiu team up for mendelssohn’s Double Concerto for Violin and Piano, a work composed when he was just fourteen. one of Strauss’ final masterpieces, Metamorphosen was written in 1945 in reaction to the wartime destruction of several German cities. underlying this poignantly beautiful work, which was originally scored for seven string instruments, is a sense of despair and nostalgia.

legendary pianist krystian Zimerman joins lan Shui and the SSo in Brahms’ First Piano Concerto, one of the towering peaks of the genre. Schoenberg’s early music is very much in the late-romantic tradition, drawing inspiration from Wagner, mahler and Strauss and characterized by his exceptional skill in orchestration. the pinnacle of this phase is his opulent and epic tone poem Pelleas und Melisande, based on maeterlinck’s popular play about a pair of doomed lovers. Scored for a huge orchestra, this work has been championed by conductors as diverse as Boulez, abbado and karajan.

SSo’s Brahms symphony cycle at Victoria concert Hall continues with austrian maestro Günter neuhold conducting the “free but happy” Third, whose middle movements were reconstructed from music originally written for an unpublished suite inspired by Goethe’s Faust. Famed for his mozart performances, christian Blackshaw returns as the soloist in the Piano Concerto No. 19 in F major, the last of the six superb piano concertos of 1784 which mozart composed upon taking up residence in Vienna, and which he chose to perform at the coronation of leopold ii in 1790.

British conductor Frank Shipway makes his SSo debut with elgar’s Second Symphony, a deeply personal work described by the composer as “the passionate pilgrimage of the soul”. Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto took over three years to compose, and finally premiered in 1803 with the composer himself at the piano: not having had time to write out the solo part completely, he played almost all of it from memory. Performing this groundbreaking concerto at this SSo concert is the 15-year-old malaysian prodigy pianist and composer tengku irfan.

renowned austrian conductor Hans Graf takes on two key masterworks which were created in the midst of adversity. Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 was completed in 1948, around the time the composer was rapidly losing favour with the Soviet authorities for his nationalistic musical ideals. the hostile environment as well as the rounds of revisions made to the work resulted in its being premiered only in 1955. despite its having been composed during a dark period in Beethoven’s life as his hearing progressively deteriorated, the Seventh Symphony contains hardly any indication of sadness or depression, and, indeed, confused early audiences with its many affirmative, dance-like elements.

Superstar violinist midori returns for another performance with the SSo playing Schumann’s Violin Concerto, a lesser known work described by the legendary yehudi menuhin as “the bridge between the Beethoven and the Brahms concertos”. as a composer under the Stalin regime, Shostakovich found himself constantly under scrutiny and attack; the Tenth Symphony was one of the important works he wrote following Stalin’s death in 1953.

liszt initially referred in manuscript to what would become his Concerto No. 2 as a “concerto Symphonique”, drawing upon the concept of symphonic metamorphosis, in which main themes or ideas are developed by soloist and orchestra working as an inextricable entity. the sensational young pianist Benjamin Grosvenor takes on this remarkably poetic work that is both delicate and athletic, forceful yet lyrical. the concert opens with Bartók’s spirited Divertimento for String Orchestra, a work that draws upon the textures of the 18th century concerto Grosso, and closes with Schubert’s Fourth Symphony.

robert Spano, the music director of the atlanta Symphony, makes his SSo debut conducting two sonic spectaculars with extra-terrestial associations. Strauss’ tone poem Also Sprach Zarathustra was inspired by nietzsche’s philosophical novel celebrating human power and energy, and the philosophy of the Superman, but it became massively popular after the use of its opening sequence in Stanley kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Holst’s great orchestral suite The Planets demands a huge orchestra which includes an organ, two unusual woodwind instruments (the bass flute and bass oboe) and a female chorus. its seven movements reflect the astrological characters of the seven planets then known (excluding earth).

acclaimed Japanese jazz pianist makoto ozone joins Joshua tan and the SSo for two favourite showpieces by american composer George Gershwin. His classic 1924 composition Rhapsody In Blue, which draws on lively jazz elements, is one of the most important american works of the 20th century. coming from the composer a year later, the Concerto in F major strengthened Gershwin’s reputation as a master composer who successfully straddled the boundaries of popular and classical music.

The forest. Strange. Eerie. Mysterious. A place of magic and surprise. So begins the orchestra version of Roald Dahl’s delightful Little Red Riding Hood. There’s a wolf, a grandma and a little girl in a red cape. But Roald Dahl has spiced things up. This feisty Little Red certainly doesn’t need a hunter to save her from any wolf! Roald Dahl’s bizarre imagination is brought to life in Dandi Productions’ sparkling presentation. Paul Patterson’s score entertains from start to finish with its modern sensibilities and its dazzling dramatic flourishes, inspired by Dahl’s famous text.

“Why does the orchestra tune to A at the beginning of a concert?” Get your answers at this fascinating children’s concert where Associate Conductor Jason Lai will take you through the A to Z of classical music in a fun and entertaining manner! Jason will also direct the orchestra in performing selections from well-loved masterpieces written by some of the greatest composers.

Adventures in the Magical Kingdom

The King of the Magical Kingdom of Far, Far Away is in town with his Jester who invites the audience to accompany them back home where a Grand Ball is about to take place. The guests begin to arrive and we meet Beauty and the Beast, Robin Hood, The Empress of the Pagodas, Puss in Boots as well as many other familiar cartoon characters. The Ball commences with the Sleeping Beauty Waltz before we all shake off our shoes and strut our stuff to the Shrek Swamp Dance Party! SSO musicians will also bring you favourite melodies from popular Disney cartoons including Lion King, Toy Story and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
