A brief History

Dhaka Zoological garden is a unique institution for conservation andrecreation. It is located in a pleasant natural landscape16 km away fromthe city center. A great necessity of establishing a state ownedzoological garden was felt in 1947. Primarily, A Zoo Park was beingstarted at High court premises of Dhaka with a limited number ofspotted dear, monkeys and few other species of animals. A master planwas approved with a view to establish a zoological garden at Mirpur in1960. An advisory board was constituted for establishment and propermanagement of zoo next year. The zoo was opened on June 23, 1974after necessary construction and procurement of animals from homeand abroad. Till then it has been grown into a beautiful and attractivezoological garden exhibiting animals in natural settings

Important Sections of the Zoo

Animal Nutrition SectionThis is one of the most important sections of the Zoo responsible fori) formulating ration of different species of animals and birds.ii) collecting the feeds from the contractors.

iii) providing the feeds as per required for animals.iv) changing ration based on the health status of animals.

Animal Nutrition Officer has been working for this section.

Animal Health SectionVeterinary surgeon is the responsible, for the treatment of thesick animals, in association with internal medical board. Inemergency, the medical team comprised of the several senior vets.members of Zoo and out of Zoo i.e. from Central veterinaryHospital. Anesthesia is mainly applied to control the animals.Sick animals are also isolated in a quarantine house under thissection for intensive care.

Animal Research SectionAnother wing of Animal Health Section responsible to diagnosethe diseases in Zoo animals. The section is headed by a ScientificOfficer exerting whole diagnosis process in regular and occasionalbasis. During any emerging and critical situation sample is sent toCDIL in confirming diagnosis as the section lacks moderndiagnostic equipments. Additionally section deals with education

and research program

1.To encourage and increase the awareness of the schoolchildren, theyare allowed to Zoo in free of charge. Generally, they come in a big groupfrom the educational institution. The authority cooperates to visit themdescribing the animals and answering their inquisitive questions.2.Internship courses on management and veterinary practices are alsobeing implemented in the zoo for the Vet. College and Universitystudents.3.Dhaka Zoo is fully co-operative in practical and research work for thepostgraduate and Ph.D. students in its limited facilities.

Management Sections (Carnivores, Small mammals and reptiles, large animal and Herbivores, Birds)For the managerial advantages all animals of the Zoo divided into 4sections. Individual Zoo Officer takes the responsibilities of eachsection. They look after the animals; send the report of the concernedsection to the curator to take the immediate actions if necessary. Everymorning 7-9 am the houses are cleaned properly by the animalcaretaker. At 10 to 11 am Zoo officer receives the feed as required forhis section and then distributes feeds immediately to the animals as per

recommendation. The required allowance of feed is divided intotwo parts- one part is supplied at 11-12 am and another part at 3-4pm.

Zoo Museum SectionIt has two divisions- i) Stuffing & Preservation - where stuffing ofdifferent extinct or endangered dead animals are made and exhibitedfor the people. And Snakes, fishes, eggs of birds, i.e. Ostrich orCassowari or small dead animals are preserved in the jar forshowing the visitors. Unfortunately there is no glass wearing forvaluable stuffing to protect from the dust.

ii) Fish Aquarium- various kinds of colorful fishes are being kept inthe Aquarium to attract the visitors. However, the technical side ofthe aquarium is now being developed to reduce mortality rate of thefishes. Some indigenous fishes are also in the aquarium to look attheir breeding capacity in the captivity and mainly to show theforeign visitors.

Fisheries SectionThere are two big lakes- one at the north and another at the souththat makes the Zoo more natural and real amusement to thevisitors. There are adequate amounts of fishes in both lakes Peopleare allowed to catch the fish by angling, collecting the ticket fromthe authority. Fisheries officer is responsible to look after thissection.

Publicity SectionThe section keeps the up-to-date records or documents of theanimals and publicity officer regulating the visitors as guide withup-to-date information on zoo animals prevailing in Dhaka Zoo

Future PlanChildren Zoo and Ladies ParkThere is a Children Park already existed from the beginning of thezoo. The Advisory committee has decided to transform this parkinto modern children zoo and Ladies Park. The ministry is alsomore attentive in this concern.

Soundless Bus ServiceThe circular road of the zoo measuring is about 3 kms. And this iscrucial for the children and aged people to visit the animals locatedin the different places of the zoo. Although it was previouslydecided that Monorail cable car could be introduced but that hasbeen changed based on the comments of IUCN specialist “sound ofthe monorail may affect the animal behavior”. At present twosoundless buses are decided to have introduced that will carry thepeople from the different points of the zoo in regular intervals.

Wide Screen TelevisionThe wide screen television may be placed in the auditorium of thezoo where that will play educational and entertainer video movieson wild animals and their behavior. Different zoos of the world maybe shown by turn. It will definitely increase the awareness of thepeople that will subsequently help to conserve wild animals.

Making Efficient PersonnelOfficers of the Zoo have to be trained in abroad to make themskilled and dynamic in management and veterinary practices. Astheir theoretical education in the home country is not good enoughto work properly and Organogram of the Zoo should be reformedso that all the trained and experienced personnel involved with wildanimals may continue their service here for long future.

Modernization of the Zoo Museum and Fish AquariumPresently stuffing in the museum is open having the dustseveryday from people coming with shoes. And manual cleaningcan’t free the dust properly. People are also inquisitive to touch

and take the hair or feathers that are harmful. It is anonymouslydecided that all stuffing should be glass covered and museum becentrally air-conditioned to protect the stuffing, even some of themare very important and extinct animal.

With a view to make the Aquarium modernized and attractivesuggestions may be taken from the Aquarium specialist. As far aspossible aquarium should be kept in the natural way, a water plantin the aquarium is one of them.

Setting Up the Close Circuit TVTo observe the valuable animal keenly and ensure the internalsecurity close circuit TV camera will be set up in front of theimportant enclosures and places of the zoo. It will make easy tomonitor the situation of the zoo all the time.

Modern Veterinary Services and Research CentreTo provide the improved health care to the animals, veterinaryhospital and research centre will be enriched with modernequipments. As well as pathologist, parasitologist, bacteriologist, radiologist will be appointed in order to furnish the accuratediagnosis process.

Squeezing BoxThere is still not any squeezing box in the Dhaka Zoo, which makesdifficult to grasp the animal for their treatments. Usually anesthesiamethod is applied to treat the animals that may cause badconsequence in the long run. So, making the squeezing box foressential enclosures is an urgent matter. But it is an expensive taskto do this work, as with setting the squeezing box, enclosures haveto be changed or extended instantly. Finally it is decided that sincethe animals are not habituated with the squeezing box, experimentally 2 boxes will be made in the lion and tiger-mot.

Limited shops in the zoo parking areaFew shops will be permitted in the parking area with the conditionthat they are allowed to sell only handicrafts, guide or leaflets onthe zoo, foods and beverages, T-shirts with Zoo monogram andanimal imaging. (END)

business of export of wild animals

to Europe to his brother Carl Hagenbeck who was one of the

biggest animal dealer in Europe at that time.

As far as the research aspect of the zoo is concern studies have been carried out on different kinds of animals.
