EXTREME ENTOMOLOGY

Insects are fun to watch and study. What makes an insect an insect? Join us at our next meeting on Tuesday, January 2 from 6:30-7:30 pm at the Extension Office to find out! We’ll have fun learn-ing all about bugs, how to become an entomologist, and learning all about what that is! Please contact Fran Martin by [email protected] for questions or more information.

SHARPSHOOTER NEWS Sharpshooters is accepting new members through the month of February. All new or returning mem-bers must attend three out of six indoor meetings. All meetings are held on Thursdays at the Exten-sion Office from 7:00-8:30 pm. Parents of new members must stay with their children at all indoor meetings. The indoor meeting schedule for the rest of the 2018 season is as follow:

January 11 (this meeting starts at 6:30 pm) February 8 March 8 April 19

New members must attend both the February and March mandatory safety meetings. Returning mem-bers only need to attend one of these two meetings. If you have questions, email us at [email protected].

ELECTRONICS CLUB Welcome to all our new members, we’re glad you have joined us! Soldering is a very important skill to learn as an electronics enthusiast, and requires a lot of practice to master. That’s why we will be learning how to construct circuits, not only with solder-less bread boards, but also on wood, plastic, and many other materials! Come see how many ways you can construct an electronic circuit on Tuesday, January 16 from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Extension Office. Contact [email protected] for questions or more information. Hope to see you there!

KEEP CALM AND COOK ON GROUP At our December meeting, we made sugar and but-ter cookie cutouts. If you don’t have time to chill dough before rolling it out, bake a large cookie in a jelly roll pan. After baking, use cookie cutters to cut out the shapes. You can find the recipe we used at: sixsistersstuff.com/recipe/2011/11/sugar-cookie-bars-and-moms-frosting/. Did you know that differ-ent parts of the world celebrate with different New Year’s foods? In Germany, sauerkraut is eaten; the more strands in the bowl, the more prosperity the new year will bring. In Asia and Europe, fish is eat-en, because they always swim ahead, representing hope. In southern USA, black-eyed peas and col-lard greens symbolize coins and dollars, which also represent prosperity. Italians eat lentils, which also represent coins or good fortune. Tis the season for many to try to eat healthier. This month we will make a recipe that helps people meet this goal. Happy New Year!

BREYER HORSE CLUB Happy New Year! We had a fun time at our Holiday Extravaganza meeting. We made fun crafts for our

model horses, and voted on this month’s meeting theme. We will be talking about the colors of model horses at our next meeting on Wednesday, January 3. We hope to see you there! The dates for each

meeting are: January 3, February 7, March 7, April 4, May 2, June 6, and July 11. We hope to see you there! Please contact Krista Bowman at 859-384-0603 if you have any questions.

AEROSPACE CLUB Our next meeting will be on Thursday, January 4 from 6:30-8:00 pm on the upper level of the Enrichment Center. We will be having a guest speaker from CVG Airport, and they will go over what goes on there to make it the eighth-highest

volume cargo hub in the world! We want to give thanks to our December guest speaker, Mark Volstad, for coming in and giving a very informative presentation on ham radios, allowing the kids to try their

hand at Morse Code. Remember, to legally fly FPV, you need a technician’s class ham radio license. On Thursday, January 18 from 6:30-8:00 pm in at the Extension Office, we will have our first of three study sessions for the ham radio exam. Test prep supplies will be provided free of charge. You do not have to be an Aerospace club member to attend. For questions or more information, contact us at [email protected].

More than 22 million tons of salt are used on US roads each winter.

The snowiest city on earth is Aomori City, Japan, getting pummeled with 312

inches (26 feet) on average per year. Snowflakes come in all sizes. The average snowflake

ranges from a size slightly smaller than a penny to the width of a human hair.

Wet snow is best for building a snowman, according to science.

Snowflakes aren't always unique. Snow crystals usually form unique patterns, but in 1988, two snowflakes collected from a Wisconsin storm were confirmed to be twins at an atmospheric research center in Colorado.

Chionophobia is the persistent fear of snow, especially becoming trapped by snow.
