Guidelines for safety using the 4-H Energy Bikes

Safety Factors:• Be sure participants have parental

permission (this may not always be possible depending on the kind of event, but is suggested if a parent is present)

• Be watchful of clothing that could easily get caught in the bike chain or spinning wheel

• Never let youth operate the bike barefoot• Avoid letting children to young/too small

operate the bike. It is easy to slip off the pedals and “crash” on the bike frame – Prevent Avoidable Injuries!!

How to reserve, pack and transport the 4-H Energy

Bike • Reserve the bike according to the one located nearest to you (See NYS 4-H STEM and

Renewable Energy web page - http://nys4h.cce.cornell.edu/about%20us/Pages/4-HEnergy.aspx

• Make arrangements with host county to transport the bike (this is the responsibility of the county/program requesting use of the bike)

• Review 4-H Energy Bike “how to” You Tube training video found on the NYS 4-H STEM Energy web site: http://nys4h.cce.cornell.edu/about%20us/Pages/4-HEnergy.aspx

• Review inventory and “how to” take the bike parts from the tote. • Use the curriculum instructions found in the box to present energy and healthy

living concepts to various audiences.• Use the guide (next page) to pack up components of he energy bike. Please be

sure that the bike, blender, and other components are clean before returning.
