Letter from our Minister

Dear Friends,

Haven’t we enjoyed some glorious weather this summer?

Compared to last year’s seemingly constant showers, with the slugs in the Manse garden having a

ball, but people up and down the country facing flash floods and washed out festivals, this year

has been dry and sunny and at times, very very hot. And are we happy? Most people seem to be,

delighting in the warmth and making the most of it, because we can’t be sure how long it will last.

When September begins, our thoughts turn to autumn, and summer is behind us, but it was good

while it lasted!

The new ‘term’ of the church year sees some changes in our office bearers.

Tom Watson has served as Treasurer for six years, contributing hugely to the work of the

church and playing a large part in both the Phase 7 restoration project and in the implementa-

tion of the Workplace Chaplain post. Tom also plays a part in the wider work of the national

church and we thank him sincerely for his hard work and attention over the last six years.

Ken Harrower has been Clerk to the Congregational Board for just over six years, and like Tom

has given many hours to the work of the church, from dealing with the day to day demands of

hall lettings and leases, to the huge amount of time he also gave to the ‘roof project’, as well as

being on duty in the pouring rain when the BBC were filming ‘Pramface’, to name a few of his du-

ties. Many of you will know of the many other projects Ken has overseen and been involved with

and again we give him our sincere thanks for all of his work – much of it unseen.

Our joint Session Clerk, Carol Christie, is returning to college for a year, to train as a primary

school teacher. Carol has been one of our Session Clerks for seven years, and her thoughtful

manner has been much appreciated by all – Carol could be quiet yet her opinions were of great

value and depth and her contribution to the wider church has been invaluable – not least at the

9.40 service and to the Sunday Club. In her years as Session Clerk, Carol has also become a pub-

lished author, much to the pride of the church and to the enjoyment of many children. We wish

her all the best for her time in teacher training, and thank her for her years as Session Clerk.

Thankfully her craft skills will still be enjoyed at the wee service, and her patience and imagina-

tion at the Sunday Club. Many thanks, Carol!

Carol has been succeeded as joint Session Clerk by Alison Edwards, and Alistair Christie has

succeeded Tom as Treasurer, while Linda Ingle continues to serve as joint Session Clerk. Their

details and contact numbers can be found on the back page of the magazine.

Jesus once said: ‘Behold I make all things new’, as he breathed new life into existing ways. We

welcome Alistair and Alison in their new roles and give thanks as the church continues to grow

and develop in the company of each other and of Christ himself.

On Sunday 14th July, the Sea Service retiring collection was £108.50 for the Sailors’ Socie-ty. Thanks to all who contribut-ed. Thanks are also given to everyone who has knitted the woollen hats over the past year. The hats are very much appreciated by the Port’s Chaplain, Tim Bell. Ken Wilson

An obituary

Ken Wilson was an elder of the Old Parish since his ordination in 1960. Ken was a Yorkshireman by

birth but spent much of his childhood in Musselburgh, and then his adult years in Corstorphine. As

a teenager Ken joined the Merchant Navy and was torpedoed twice, once close to Halifax Nova

Scotia, and again at Murmansk. These two events must have had a profound effect on such a young

man, and yet Ken rarely spoke of his war experiences, preferring instead to live life to the full as a

husband, father and grandfather. Ken and Nan met through Millerhill Church in Musselburgh and

moved to Corstorphine when they got married, where they settled for life, made many good

friends, became fully involved in the life of the Old Parish and brought up their own family, Valerie,

Carole and Philip.

Ken was a civil servant and many of us remember his meticulous and careful work and his eye for

detail all of which he brought to his roles as roll keeper, Treasurer, superintendent of the Sunday

School, and of course as an elder. In recent years Ken suffered from dementia, and yet despite

him being unable to recognise individual visitors, he always treated them with his trademark gen-

tlemanly politeness and interest in their stories.

His family asked that 1 Corinthians 13 be read at his funeral service, a reading that concludes:

faith, hope, love abide, these three, but the greatest of these is love – an entirely appropriate

reading for a long and faithful life, and for a much loved man.

The Great Tapestry of Scotland

Following the success of the Prestonpans Tapestry 3 years ago, The Great Tapestry of Scotland was conceived and has been completed by designers and 1,000 stitch-ers. There are embroidered 163 panels relating the history of Scotland. The pan-els will be on display to the public from 3rd to 21st September in the Scottish Parlia-ment Building and anyone interested in em-broidery and/or history should go along to see it. It will be on display in other venues when such places can be found!

Sunday Tea and Coffee

It is almost ten years since we began having tea

and coffee after our Sunday morning service.

Since then many of our members and visitors

have enjoyed the chance to have a cuppa and a

blether before going home for their Sunday

lunch.

If you have not been able to join us in the High

Street Hall or it is some time since you did, why

not ‘give it a try’. We can promise a warm wel-

come when you join us.

If you would like to volunteer to serve the tea

from time to time, please contact Linda Ingle or

give your name to the duty officebearer on a

Sunday morning.

Common Senses

I saw God in a flower today,

I saw God in the trees;

I saw Him in the butterflies,

The busy, humming bees.

I felt God in a loving hand,

I felt God in the sun;

I felt Him in my cosy home,

In warmth, in love, in fun.

I heard God in the whispering wind,

I heard God in the singing birds

I heard God in the way you spoke

In loving, kindly words.

God’s perfume filled the air today,

In fresh mown grass and sea;

In damp, moist earth after the rain,

In shrubs and lilac tree.

I tasted water from a spring,

Fresh honey from the bee;

With my five senses I thank God,

For giving them to me.
