FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

We enjoyed a wonderful celebration of Saint Catherine of Siena last weekend with the incredible production of “Catherine of Siena: A Woman for Our Times” and the ice cream social that followed. I think everyone in attend-ance had an opportunity to experience Saint Catherine in a new way—or even for the first time—through the per-formance of Sister Nancy Murray. We were indeed blessed.

I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary from the House of For-mation for their hospitality to Sister Nancy. They opened their home to her and received her as one of their own. We all understand the stress of entertaining—making sure everything is in place, food, time, energy—and the Sis-ters did this with such grace and joy. Thank you, Sister Holly, Sister Margaret, Sister Sue, Sister Claudette, and Sis-ter Roxane for receiving Sister Nancy and making her feel so comfortable.

Now we begin to move, almost too quickly, toward the end of our Easter Season. This Thursday marks the forti-eth day since Easter, the day on which we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord. Of course, there will be extra Mass-es for the holy day, hopefully at times that will meet your schedule. If not, please do take the time to celebrate this important day at another church. Then, in just ten days after that, we will celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost with great joy and conclude the Easter Season. We always celebrate Pentecost well, and this year will be no differ-ent. The blessings that have come to our parish during this Easter have been abundant, and so we look forward to marking Pentecost as a day when the life of the Spirit that came down upon the apostles will be renewed in each one of us so that we may continue to proclaim the mystery of the Risen Christ and His unfailing presence among us. Given some of the challenges that we experience every day—in our workplaces, in our homes, in our Church—we need to rely on the Spirit of Jesus among us more in-tently. Wouldn’t we be much more productive proclaiming the resurrection of Christ than getting involved in speculation and gossip which oftentimes infil-trates our lives? I want to encourage all of us (yes, me included!) to speak more of Christ than about one another. We all need to do a little bit more to be mes-sengers of the Gospel rather than bearers of other kinds of news.

During this week, I happened to be checking my calendar and realized that I hadn’t added our priestly ordina-tions to it. Then I remembered that we don’t have any men being ordained for our diocese this year. We have 122 churches in our diocese which constitute approximately 90 parishes. In larger dioceses, that may not seem like an overwhelming number, but we are not a large diocese and we do not have a large number of priests anymore. It’s almost shocking to realize that as our senior priests retire or accept “senior priest” status, that we just don’t have enough priests to fulfill the responsibilities of maintaining parish life as we have always known it. In a diocese that once produced many diocesan and religious priests, significant numbers of religious brothers and exorbitant amounts of religious sisters, we find ourselves struggling day by day. Has faith diminished that much over the years that no one is being called any more?

I would dare say that God is still calling and that the faith is stronger today, especially here at Saint Kathryn’s. I’m edified by the number of young people we have in our community and by the young families who consistently bring their children to Holy Mass. It is from among our teens and from those children who may be a little feisty in the pews today who will be our priests, Sisters, and Brothers tomorrow. I’m pretty confident that there are a few young adults among us today who have thought about a priestly or religious vocation and who just aren’t sure if God is calling them or what the repercussions from family and friends will be. Trust me—every priest and every woman and man entering into religious life has asked the same question and shared in the same fear. But we look at the men and women from our parish who have entered religious life or the priesthood and see the joy of serving God and the Church all over their faces!

Sisters and brothers in Christ, look around our church. You will assuredly see someone that you would say, “I can see him as a priest” or “She would be a wonderful Sister.” Don’t be afraid to ask them if they’ve ever thought about it or afraid to point them out to me. Who knows? You might be the very person to encourage them to take the next step!

Until next week...God bless! Father Joe

SAINT KATHRYN RELIGIOUS GOODS

One of the items we started carrying over the last few months has been an LED Devotional candle that we purchased because of all the neat safety features it has and because it’s ideal for hospital, nursing home or any room in the home. The great ideas that have been in-corporated into these are: there is no flame (it;s an LED candle), there is a timer built in so you can set it once and it comes on at the same time every day, the light is low enough to use as a night light also. The lights sold out in almost no time. We just ordered another group of them and they should be in the store as you read this. They make perfect inexpensive gifts for anyone you visit in a hospital and they are an excellent addi-tion to any home. The Jubilee Rosaries have been surprising everyone that has seen and purchased one because of their quality and beauty. Stop in and take a look.

FAITH FACTS

Many of our new parishioners have remarked that they have “experienced” the sprinkling rite in their former parishes, but not quite in the same way as it takes place here. Many continue to be surprised by the addition of salt to the water, and so this week, we’d like to take the time to share that sacramental with you.

Since the coming of Jesus, salt that had been cleansed and sanctified by special exorcisms and prayers was given to catechumens before entering the church for baptism. At the Third Council of Carthage in the third century, salt was administered to the catechumens sev-eral times a year, verified by Saint Augustine of Hippo (Confessions I.11). Two specific rites, namely a cross traced on the forehead and a taste of blessed salt, not only marked the entrance into the catechumenate, but were repeated regularly. By his own account, Saint Au-gustine was "blessed regularly with the Sign of the Cross and was seasoned with God's salt."

In the sixth century, John the Deacon explained the use of blessed salt, "so the mind which is drenched and weakened by the waves of this world is held steady." Salt continued to be customarily used during the scru-tinies of catechumens or the baptism of infants.

The 1962 Rituale Romanum includes salt as component in three rites: at Baptism, for the reconsecration of an altar and the blessing holy water. Salt is added to water in silence after a prayer in which God is asked to bless the salt, recalling the blessed salt "scattered over the water by the prophet Elisha" and invoking the protec-tive powers of salt and water, that they may "drive away the power of evil."

BULLETIN ADVERTISING

Thank you, Bulletin Ad Sponsors! Help Still Needed! Jillianne Snow from Liturgical Publications, our bulle-tin publisher, was with us this past week securing ad-vertisers for our Bulletin. We would like to thank all of the advertisers who have generously committed to the Bulletin for this year! We still have space available and humbly ask that you consider advertising your business or remembering a loved one in our weekly bulletin. Our parish bulletin is one of our main communication tools to our parish members. It provides inspirational words from Father, Mass intentions, news, and events for the week ahead. We are thankful that this crucial communication piece is provided to our parish at no cost thanks to the generous advertising support of our parishioners and community-minded business-es. Please let us know if you can help. Sponsors of our bulletin recognize the tremendous value of connecting with our church family, who in turn respond by sup-porting our sponsors! THE SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

VOCATIONS CORNER

On Wednesday of this past week, Sister Mary Athana-sius, O.P., a member of our parish, celebrated her name day. Congratulations and many prayers are sent to Sis-ter Athanasius from her family here at Saint Kathryn’s. And don’t forget to keep the other men and women from our parish who are in formation in your prayers: Brother John Mark Solitario, O.P., Brother Marius Strom, TOR, Sister Faustina Kolbe Burda, DMN, Sister Maria Mechtilde Ainley, OSB.

FIRST COMMUNION

Between yesterday and next Saturday, fifty-two chil-dren from our parish will have received their First Holy

Communion here at Saint Kathry-n’s. What a wonderful gift they are receiving from the Lord and we pray that they will remain as close to Him as branches to the Vine. The children’s names will be published in next week’s bulletin. Each of these children is invited to participate in our May Crown-

ing next Sunday following the 10:30 a.m. Mass, and we hope that many of them will join us in their First Com-munion outfits and celebrate our May Crowning.

MOTHER’S DAY MASSES

Each of the Masses next weekend will be offered for all mothers (living and deceased) enrolled in our Mother’s Day Spiritual Bouquet. Cards and envelopes are availa-ble in the chapel vestibule and at the Shrine of Our La-dy of Czestochowa. Envelopes must be returned before the Saturday Vigil Mass in order to be included in the Mass intention.

THANK YOU!

Thank you to all of our volunteers who helped us with last weekend’s celebration of Saint Catherine of Siena. It was an amazing weekend thanks to so many hands! Thank you to all of our greeters and ticket takers; to those who staffed the store table; to the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary who hosted Sister Nancy and drove her back and forth to the church; to our Jubilee Social Committee who prepared an incredible ice cream social and decorated the parish hall; to Charlene and Jen who worked so hard behind the scenes and or-ganized every moment of that weekend; and to Dave LeLievre who crafted the magnificent Jubilee Rosary that we presented to Sister Nancy. Thank you to all!
