Government - electricity dilemma
• No Energy strategy
• Years of putting off decisions
• Nuclear decision awaited
• Nuclear deal provided indication of future electricity price
• Fracking Gas – will it deliver
• Gas Energy Suppliers not prepared to invest without
guarantee of demand
• Renewables – Energy industry message was Renewables
only work when the conditions are right – still need power
stations!
• Storage totally changes everything
• Now renewables & storage predicted to be the cheapest
electricity generator by 2020
Government - electricity further issues
• Brexit does not help - interconnectors
• Why buy electricity from EDF if not in EU (£100B profit over
lifetime of Hinkley)
• Upset French Government if Hinkley does not proceed
• Upset Chinese Government if Hinkley does not go ahead
• If Hinkley does not proceed Bradwell Nuclear Power Station
will not be built
• Other planned Nuclear Power Stations need £92.50/MWh so
they also will not be built
• Coal fired power stations being shut down
• And the problems keep mounting
• Likely hood of black outs now high
Government advice – from everywhere!
• Onshore Wind and Solar will be the cheapest generators
• Offshore Wind is twice the price of Onshore
• Grid connection costs from Offshore Wind are enormous
• National Grid now talking about “Smart” grids
• DNO’s want new rules – distributed energy is happening
• “Smart” meter role out underway
• Half hourly metering costs in red zone would hit all domestics
• Electricity price in the future is going up
• Speed of deployment of Solar took Government by surprise
• 1GW expected by now, in fact 12GW deployed
• Battery Storage predicted to fall in price faster than Solar
• Battery Storage can be deployed very fast
Storage – where is it coming from?
• When talking Storage we are talking Lithium Ion Batteries
• Developed by the electronics companies for mobile phones
• Used then in computers – laptop’s / Ipad’s
• Same battery technology used now in EV’s
• Initial batteries – Nissan Leaf – created range anxiety - 90mile
• The next Leaf will have a 340mile range
• Tesla shocked the Motor Industry by challenging them
• Tesla shocked the Power Industry by challenging them
• All Motor manufacturers launching full range of EV’s in 2018
• Motor manufacturers will offer home storage
• The future energy market will be radically different - soon
Lithium Ion Battery development
• Most EV manufacturers targeting
a 350 mile range in 2018
• Range anxiety will be a thing of
the past
• Mass production drives down
price rapidly
• Most Lithium Ion battery
manufacturers expanding
production
• EV Charging times were 8 hours,
now heading to 15 minutes
• But EV’s need “clean electricity”
To be clean EV’s need Clean Electricity
• Fast charging presents some
challenges to the grid – Storage
will be used at fast charging
points
• Using Solar to charge EV’s
provide total clean transport
• Most EV owners presently charge
batteries every time they park!
• Charge your car in daytime from
Solar and power your house at
night – this is the future.
Storage – benefits to Grid
• Storage of electricity in batteries
provides many complimentary
benefits to the grid
• Fast Frequency Response, Fast
Demand Response, Voltage
Control can help both National Grid
& Distribution Network Operators
manage their Grid and avoid costly
upgrades
• Smart technology will allow large
and small storage installations to
be operated remotely to
supplement the grid.

Battery Technology still developing
• Thought to be impossible, powering heavy
vehicles, but not now.
Other possible fast movers in Storage?
• Motor Industry never stands still and
this year is launching Hydrogen Fuel
Cell vehicles to selected markets (up to
450 mile range)
• Likely to be developed more for heavier
transport particularly in Cities solving
pollution problems
• Hydrogen transport infrastructure
starting in some UK cities
• Often seen as the holy grail of
Renewables, Hydrogen allows
electricity to be transferred over very
large distances

• Energy Efficient Zero
Carbon Buildings are
not dead!
• Regulations will be
changing
• Modular high quality
Buildings are the future
• Solar and Storage and
linked to EV’s will
provide the power
