region, was founded in 1669, starting from São José da Barra do Rio Negro fort and elevated to a village in 1832 with the name of Manaus, which means “mother of gods,” in tribute to the indian nation of Manaos. Transformed into municipality in 1848 under the name Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro, regaining its present name only in 1856. Located near the Equator, at the confluence of the Rio Negro and Solimões to form the Rio Amazonas, it became

known internationally in the early twentieth century, the heyday of the rubber, when became the first city in Brazil to receive electricity, water treatment and sewage, storm sewers, and electric tram service. In the 1960s, with the implementation of the Zona Franca de Manaus, the city regained its highlighted spot on the national scene. Located in the center of the world’s largest rainforest, offers its visitors preserved forest areas, extensive river beaches and a rich cultural and architectural heritage.

In the late 1940s, with the decline of rubber, the residents of Airão - current Airão Velho - moved to the Vila de Tauapeçaçu, today Novo Airão. Some say that a lot of ants expelled the people from Airão Velho. Famous for its river beaches with white sand and the production of handicrafts in wood and vegetable fibers, Novo Airão has

several Federal and State Protected Areas, which make up the Mosaic of Baixo Rio Negro Protected Area, also Terra Indígena Waimiri-Atroari. Known as Ecological Paradise, Novo Airão is responsible for the conservation of an important portion of the Amazônia Brasileira, and has great potential for sustainable tourism, which combines nature conservation, income generation and environmental justice.

Historic Heritage: For visitors who want to see up close a part of the historical legacy preserved in Manaus, there are many good options. Opened in 1906, with raw material from England, the Alfândega was one of the first edifications built in Brazil with stone blocks. Main entrance of fisheries production and rural development in the city, Mercado Municipal Adolfo Lisboa opened in 1882, and is a replica of “Les Halles” market in Paris.

Ports: Rivers are considered to be as important for the Amazônia as roads are to the rest of Brazil. From Ports, people and goods move between cities and inside them. The Porto de Manaus, for example, was designed and built by the British in the early twentieth century and is an interesting piece of engineering, in which part of its structure varies with the rise and fall of Rio Negro waters.

Tourism with Botos: Known attraction, the boto vermelho or boto cor-de-rosa observation enchants many visitors to Novo Airão. Considered one of the symbols of the Amazônica fauna, these mammals, which feed mainly on fish, frequently can be seen at the Flutuante dos Botos, located near the ICMBio harbor and the city´s Câmara de Vereadores. The rules of conduct must be respected when observing these graceful animals, such as not feeding or harassing them.
