Committee members participated in community outreach, dedeveloped and delivered workshops for students, and organized a meeting with politicans in Coquitlam. The #MsMayor social media campaign was launched in partnership with Women Transforming Cities. The campaign encourages young women to write a message about what they would do if they were mayor, and then spand then spread the word by posting it on social media.

Justice System Education Program

This program provides culturally-sensitive public legal education to communities throughout Northern BC and is funded by the Law Foundation and a BCLC grant. Courtlink youth programs for Aboriginal youth-at-risk, teach the structure and operation of the BC justiBC justice system. Workshops on legal and restorative justice topics are also part of the program as well as school presentations in band and public schools.

Northern Native Public Legal Education

Newcomers with limited English ability need more than translation services when they are involved in court matters. The CIPI program has been in operation in BC since 1993, serving immigrants that are in need of legal information, assistance with court forms and an understanding of of court processes. CIPI Court Workers provide front line service at the Vancouver and Surrey Provincial Courthouses and serve Punjabi, Hindi, Cantonese, Mandarin and English speaking communities.

Court Information Program for Immigrants

This free, three-hour workshop helps separating parents be more equipped to deal with the nancial aspects of a family break up. The voluntary workshop helps parents learn business-like strategies for dealing with nancial issues for the short and long term. Workshops are held in in Port Coquitlam,Vancouver,and Victoria.

Parenting After Separation-Finances

This free, three-hour workshop is for parents and guardians who are dealing with parenting and support issues. The course explains the effects of separation and demonstrates effective ways to communicate and solve problems in parenting situations. The The course is required for parents with a family matterin provincial court.

Justice Education Society British Columbia

JES was contracted by the fair mining collaborative to produce Fairmining.ca, a website which examines BC’s mining legislation and mining practices.

Fair Mining

In March of 2013, the Immigrant PLEI Consortium project came to an end. The project was launched in 2009 to help immigrant settlement agencies be more able to handle legal inquiries from their clients. Over the years, more than 300 settlement workers received training on legal issues relating to employment, housing, family matters and domestic violence. Legacy items from the project include dozens of resources (some in more than 10 languages) and the ImmiImmigrantLegal.ca website, which helps more than 20,000 clients each year and is the home of the Family Law Act training course.

Immigrant PLEI ConsortiumJES developed and delivered training on Youth Crime and Gangs to 500+ criminal justice personnel and community service workers through a series of 10 regional workshops. Speakers included Crown Counsel, RCMP officers, Youth Services, community service representatives, and former gang members. The workshops focused on changes to the YCJA, effective extrajudicial measures, and gang exit strategies. A video called “Y“Youth and Gangs: Getting Out” was produced as a sequel to our “Youth and Gangs: Making Smart Choices” video.

With support from Judge Buller Bennett and funding from the BC Provincial Court, JES produced a 45 minute video on BC’s rst First Nations Court in New Westminster.

There have been changes to legislation for bankruptcy matters in Supreme Court. JES updated our Bankruptcy Guidebook and introduced a new guidebook called Student Loans & Bankruptcy.

Civil Guidebooks

Fifteen factsheets providing basic information on a range of legal services available in BC were produced and printed for new immigrants. All of the factsheets are available in English, Chinese (simplied and traditional), Punjabi, Korean and Farsi.

Immigrant Fact Sheets

This self-help website for youth provides legal information on a wide range of topics. Two new topics were added, Mental Health and Financial Help.

Legal Rights for Youth

The virtual services have been evaluated by the Canadian Forum on Civil Justice. Among the conclusions in the report, 91% of users indicated they were satised or very satised with the service. In addition, after using the service, 84% said they feel more condent or very condent about their ability to deal with their legal issue.

Weekdays from 11am until 2 pm users can chat live to get answers to their questions. During offline hours users submit questions by email.

A video-based, virtual assistant helps guide users to the information they need.

JES has introduced a new online service on SmallClaimsBC.ca to help people settle disputes without going to court. Cases can be up to $25,000. The platform lets two parties communicate, upload supporting documents and negotiate an agreement. Settling online helps save time and money, compared to going to court. This is a free service, funded by the Canadian Bar Association Law for the Future Fund.

Small Claims BC - Online Dispute Resolution

JES was contracted by California Courts to produce FamiliesChange.ca.gov for their jurisdiction. The website is live with Guides to Separation and Divorce, Changeville and the PaParenting After Separation online course. The society is working to produce the resources in Spanish.

Families Change California

JES is working with the Ministry of Justice to evaluate the Parenting After Separation online course developed by JES. Separating parents with matters for Provincial Court in Campbell River, Courtney, Kamloops, PePenticton, and Vernon are required to take the Online PAS course and the Ministry is gathering feedback on the impact of the course.

Online PAS Pilot Project

Parenting After Separation Finances is the new name for Finances After Separation. The online course mirrors content from the in-person PAS Finances workshop. The course includes videos, worksheets, and activities, along with a Parent Handbook. The PAS Finances online course is an extension of the PAS online online course. Separating parents gain information and skills to make nancial decisions in the best interests of the children.

Parenting After Separation - Finances CybersafeBC.ca is an online

course that helps kids play safe and stay safe in the di digital world. The course provides age-appropriate information and activities for youth between ages 10 and 16. Developed in partnership with the RCMP, topics include: Your Digital Footprint: Cyber Safety, Sending Messages, Posting Online, and Online Crime: Identity Theft, Online Predators and CybeCyberbullying. The course is completely video- based and it allows youth to register and complete the exam to become Cybersafe Certied.

1,220 criminals captured and 1,440 lives saved thanks to the training and equipment donated to the Special Methods Unit in Guatemala that improved the operation s and quality of evidence produced for trials.

Hundreds of gang members captured since 2013 in El Salvador by police and investigators using investigative techniques learned from B.C. experts.

Convictions grew from 5% to 30% between 2009 and 2013 because of increased abilities of the Guatemalan Public Ministry and National Civic Police to collect, process and present evidence.

Project Highlights

The 2013-2014 year was a busy one for JES International Team in Canada, Central America and Ethiopia. We successfully completed three multi-year projects funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD), plus a few small projects funded by the Canadian embassies in both Mexico and Guatemala.

As several of the projects concluded, JES received funding from As several of the projects concluded, JES received funding from DFATD to continue the work in Central America: “Strengthening Anti-Crime Capacity in the Northern Triangle - Phase II”, a $2.5 million 15-month project. The objective of this project is to further promote the security system reform in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador by enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of prosecutors, police, judicial and intelligence authorities to combat and prevent criminal activity by building upon the current and prevent criminal activity by building upon the current capacities of each country.

In May 2013, the then GuatemalanAttorney General Claudia Paz y Paz visited Vancouver to highlight the successes of a special program where JES and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit have worked with police in the gang-ravaged Central American country. These improved techniques have led to evidence that is being increasingly used and recognized by the courts.

We produced a lm, “The Most Violent Place on Earth”, showcasing JES’s work in the Northern Triangle of Central America. The documentary explores the extent of violence, shares rst hand accounts, and illustrates a behind-the-scenes look at JES justice reform work. The rst screening included the work.
