1947 KELLOGG’S ALL-WHEAT

This third and final set of Kellogg’s All-Wheat cards followed the same design as the previous two sets. There is likely one more card in the set that would make each group of football cards number at least five of the SPORT-TIPS subsets. In 1947 still more additional sport tips were made available on the backs of the cereal boxes, following

some of the same designs used earlier in the newspaper series, but it is not known if this practice was followed in the first or second year of the set issues.Prices for cards in intact sheets are estimates as per the 1st set.

1956 NABISCO SHREDDED WHEATThese cards were available in boxes of Nabisco Shredded Wheat

cereal in 1956, It is believed there were two to a box but definitive proof of that is unavailable. At 105 cards this is definitely one of the most challenging of all the classic CFL sets to put together. It seems unlikely that any one family would have purchased the amount of cereal necessary to complete this set over the life of the promotion and complete sets would have been extremely rare, even in 1956.Each card contained a tab on the lower portion that the collector

could cut off and remit once they had completed any of the team subsets in order to receive some sort of prize. Even completing a team set would have been very difficult and this might account for the fact that the vast majority of these cards that are available today have the tabs attached, and only rarely do you see a copy without the tab. Cards without the tab should be considered no better that VG no matter what the condition of the remainder of the card is.Seven of the nine CFL teams (Montreal and B.C. excluded) are

featured on fifteen card subsets each assigned a different letter (from A to G) in the card’s numbering system. The cards images are black and white head shots superimposed over a two colour background keyed to the team’s jersey colours. Player selection for the set is excellent with the majority of the cards being rookie cards and many star and Hall of Fame players included. There are some curiosities in the player selection as every team except Hamilton includes a

coach card, with Hall of Famers Frank “Pop” Ivy and Frank Clair being among the coaching standouts. Coach Frank Filchock of the Roughriders is not flagged as a quarterback for this set as his playing days with the club were over by this time. While the Blue Ribbon Tea set predates this set by two years, the

Nabisco set is a grade rarer than the Blue Ribbons and as such the card values are roughly equivalent for the same grade of player in each set. The Nabisco set is collectively the most expensive of all CFL sets, having 25 more cards than the Blue Ribbon set, even though the cards are no where near as attractive as the Blue Ribbon full body colourized card photographs. It is unknown whether or not the cereal boxes featured promotional

information about the cards contained inside, but it would seem reasonable that this was the case. Presumably details regarding what sorts of prizes were available for submitting a complete team set of tabs would have been printed on the boxes. The promotion was advertised in Saturday morning comic sections of various papers and in both French and English language versions. The cards were also advertised in newspapers and game programs of the era.

OPC’s final insert set was an innovative sticker issue containing three separate player images that could be individually peeled and stuck. Naturally many of the stickers were destroyed through use and consequently complete items in prime condition are difficult to acquire today. Compounding the difficulty is the high percentage of stickers that were poorly centered, miscut, not printed straight with respect to the card edge or had blurred registration of the photo-graphic image. The stickers are comprised of the same players that OPC featured in

its’ regular issue with the exception of Hamilton quarterback Chuck Ealey who appears only in the insert set as sticker number 12. Most

of the sticker photographs are different images than those used on the cards but appear to have been taken during the same photo sessions.Evaluation of existing complete sheets of stickers shows that not all

stickers were produced in equal numbers (assuming only one sheet design was used). The first six sticker panels (sticker numbers 1 through 18) occur on the sheet three times each and are listed as short prints. The next nine panels (numbers 19 through 45) occur on the sheet four times each, and the last nine panels (numbers 46 through 72) occur on the sheet five times each and are listed as extra prints. The designations apply to the whole sticker panel where indicated.
