Ever since man began to build, hehas sought quality sand. Sand thathas rounded particles, sand thathas a full range of well-gradedsizes, sand that finishes smoothly, sand that gives strength and beauty in what man builds.

From the ancients to the present, good natural sand deposits havebeen exploited and depleted. Nowwe must crush rock to producesand for our modern structures. Nocrushing job is more difficult thanproducing man-made sand. Priorto the REMco SandMax, a widerange of crusher types had beenapplied to the task with limited success. The challenge of a qualityproduct, in specification, with goodcubical particle shape and with thedesired F.M. (fineness modulus) hascaused many crusher failures.

High strength sand comes fromhard rock and hard rock is wherethe REMco SandMax beats allother crushing machines. For versatility of use, net tons of product, total cost to run, ease of installation, smoothness of operation, reliability and hassle-free performance, the REMcoSandMax is superior to all others.

But producing quality specificationsand requires more than a crusher,it requires knowledge, a welldesigned material processing circuit and the willingness tounderstand that sand production ismore than rock crushing. AtREMco , we can teach you how tomake sand.

VSI Impact Crushing has beenproven to be the most efficientmethod of size reduction whenprocessing rocks, ores or minerals. The reason this is so is because it isthe best way to transfer energyfrom the drive motors to the material being reduced. Impactcrushers have fewer moving parts and less mechanical loss when compared to compressionmachines such as cone crushers.

In the past, the limits on impactcrushers has been their high cost tooperate when the material is hardand abrasive. Historically, hard rocksuch as granites, quartzites andother materials with high abrasivescontent have caused severe wearon the crushing members of vertical shaft impact crushers making them prohibitively expensive to operate.

The REMco innovation of combin-ing extra heavy-duty vertical shaftimpactor design with autogenetic(rock lined) crushing chambers androtors has lowered the wear partsoperating cost of RockMax to alevel equal to or less than any finehead cone crusher. This is for costper net ton of finished productregardless of material or producttonnage required.

Don’t believe it?

Try us.

Vertical Shaft Impact Crushers thatuse an anvil type crushing chamberare well proven for the quick andefficient reduction of limestoneand other less abrasive stones and minerals.

The REMco ST/AR crushers are avariation of the REMco SandMaxand RockMax series. Thesemachines share many of the same heavy-duty designs and components, as well as the verysuccessful bearing cartridge andmain shaft design.

REMco ST/ARs use an innovativereversible anvil design whichallows for maximum utilization ofthe anvil type wear iron. This feature provides for a maximumcrushing efficiency when the anvilsare new, concentrating the wear onhalf of the anvil face. The anvils canthen be easily turned, providing acomplete new crushing face on the same anvil. This maintains maximum crushing efficiency forthe duration of the life of the anvil. This also reduces scrap loss.

REMco ST/ARs are fully convert-ible VSI crushers which can be easily converted from anvils torock-on-rock chambers if the feed material dictates that such achange is appropriate. The ST/ARdesignation means these machinesare fitted with a Swing Top / AnvilRing design.

Remember ...With a REMco VSI Crusher ...

the rock never wins!!

The REMco Selective Crushing ProcessREMco impact crushers are designed for crushing a wide range of rocks, ores and minerals into fine cubical products. REMco crushers with their unique high performancemulti-port rotor designs have expanded the application range and crushing technology forrock-on-rock reduction. Due to their various sizes and configurations, REMco impactcrushers achieve an application versatility that has never been possible until now.

ROCK-ON-ROCK reduction of all material feeds is achieved by high velocity energytransfer which commences as the rock feed enters the feed tube. At this point it is movingby gravity. When the incoming continuous ribbon of rock particles passes over the center distributor plate of the rotor, it is divided into multiple separate streams which are forcefully impacted on the trailing edge of the autogenous waves at the center of the rotor.Rapid acceleration then begins moving the particles towards the higher velocity at the rotorport exit. As the material begins its path through the rotor, it is being compressed by the rising G forces of the rotor rotation. This multi-layered stream of rock is abraded, compressed and pulverized against the rock lined waves which are formed and held in placeby the radial rotor walls.

Inter-particle comminution with multiple collisions occur and a variety of forces act on the individual rock pieces as they proceedthrough the rotor. Because of the increasing effect of the rising centrifugal force, the mass of rock pieces form a continuous chainreaction, the coarser particles bear on the smaller ones while simultaneously rolling over each other within the mass of material, achieving size reduction of each and all particles. The reduction is achieved by the continuous, rapid turbulence that occurs whenenergy is applied to and dissipated by each particle in microseconds.

After the high velocity rock exits the rotor, you have a choice, RockMax, SandMax or ST/AR -

REMco ST and ST/AR crushers are unique because they offer the greatest versatility possible in a vertical shaft design. AllREMco ST models are fully convertible from rock-on-rock to rock-on-anvil with a minimum of cost and conversion time.

This superior versatility of REMco impact crushers provide the modern cost conscious producer interested in top qualitycrushed products the ability to control crusher variables to optimize crushing performance. In third or fourth stage crushing appli-cations REMco impact crushers can be customized for feed size, rotor speed, rotor type, number of ports, connected power andchamber density. All this to operate at the lowest possible wear cost per net finished ton.

*Abrasives content is the sum of silica, alumina and iron as a percent of the total chemical analysis of the rock.

ROCK-ON-ROCKThe rock initially impacts on the bed of material built up onthe chamber shelf and pockets. Immediately on contact, theindividual pieces experience a rapid additional attritionaction from deceleration and are at the same time hit by therock particles following; thereby, maintaining a continuousreduction stream of high energy collisions. In REMcoRockMax and SandMax crushers, as the rock piecesactually exit the rotor on a trajectory tangential to its rotation, the effect is that the rock mass travels in a highvelocity dense particle cloud continuously circling inside thecrushing chamber, crushing, grinding and pulverizing as themass rotates. The crushed rock mass, its energy finally spent, accumulates weight until it overcomes the force of the rockflow energy exiting the rotor. This high density, low velocitychamber load is further crushed in suspension as it flows outover the crushing chamber by gravity.

ROCK-ON-ANVILThe rock initially impacts a large heavy chrome iron anvil positioned at a variable distance from the rotor. The gapbetween the rotor and the anvil is determined by the application of the crusher to a specific rock type and desiredproduct. The anvil thickness and angle is also varied depend-ing on wear characteristics of the material as the anvil is consumed. Another feature on REMco ST/AR crushers isthe multi-position anvil ring which allows the raising andlowering of the anvil relative to the rock stream from the rotor, to maximize utilization of the wear iron. In combination with the reversible design of all REMcoST/AR anvils, this can provide up to a 4-face positioning ofthe same anvil set. This minimizes scrap loss and reduces thewear cost per ton. Typically, materials having an abrasivecontent less than 15% are ideally suited for reduction inREMco ST/AR crushers*.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SPEEDAALLLL IIMMPPAACCTT TTYYPPEE CCRRUUSSHHIINNGG MMAACCHHIINNEESS UUSSEESSPPEEEEDD TTOO CCRRUUSSHH!! While there are many factors thataffect the crushing efficiency of impact crushers, the mostimportant of these is material velocity. This determines theamount of crushing which is done and the overall gradingof the crusher discharge. Generally, the faster the material isaccelerated, the greater the amount of crushing that isachieved. For this reason, it is essential that the impactcrusher used have a wide operating speed range to accommodate a broad spectrum of material types and feed gradings.

REMco vertical shaft impact crushers have the broadestoperating range of all VSI crushers. Please refer to the rotor velocity scale chart. For material reduction, the generalvelocity range is for particles traveling from 100 ft/sec. (30mps) to 328 ft/sec. (100 mps). Within this range, all rocks andminerals will break. As illustrated on the scale, the lowerspeeds from below 100 ft/sec. (30 mps) and up to 175 ft/sec.(53 mps) are generally considered shaping speeds. In thisrange, tumbling, rubbing and mild impacts are the principleaffects. This results in a rounding of the individual pieceswith failure of thin sections, points and any weakenedseams in the rock particles. The end result being a cubing ofthe rock which results in a sounder, stronger particle, somefines production and an overall coarser discharge gradingfrom the crusher.

The general crushing range for producing typical aggregateproducts for construction materials has been established atapproximately 175 ft/sec. (53 mps) to about 260 ft/sec. (79mps) Within this range, the principle affect is severe impact, high attrition and compression of the rock stream. Thisresults in a significant production of smaller particles when

compared to those being fed to the crusher. Usually it isbest to experiment with speed within this range becausethe fracture characteristics of rocks vary widely. To get goodcrushing with a balance of recycle and controlled production of fines, it is only necessary to achieve thethreshold speed to fracture. Any additional speed consumes extra power raising energy cost and often generating undesirable size distribution in the crusher discharge.

Speeds above 260 ft/sec. (79 mps) are reserved for applications where pulverizing and grinding of the materialare desired. At these higher speeds, it is possible to produce manufactured sand and many industrial mineralsrequiring fine sizes, in many cases, smaller than 1 mm. These applications require care, knowledge and experience toachieve the highest production of the fine product withoutexcessive energy consumption and with acceptable overalloperating cost.

Whether your crushing requirement is for shaping, generalcrushing or grinding and pulverizing, a REMco VSI canbe custom applied to produce your product. ContactREMco for guidance.

REMco VSI crushers use a rotating impeller that acts as a rock pump to accelerate and impartspeed onto the rock particles which are fed to it. Depending on the model and particular application, the rotor configuration can be varied to suit. A common feature of all REMco rotorsis their unique internal construction, using the most efficient port configuration to accelerate theincoming feed stream into multiple flows. As the rocks are fed to the crusher, each particle experiences a rapid acceleration and deceleration in microseconds. This fills the crushing

chamber with a violent rock cloud. Depending on the desired product, the crushing forcesapplied can be controlled by the operating speed of the machine. This speed control when

combined with a variety of crushing chamber features results in optimum crushing efficiency for the power employed.

Hard rocks may only be shaped at crushing speeds and softrocks can often be crushed at shaping speeds. REMcoVSI crushers for ... any rock, any speed, anywhere.

A variety of proven circuit arrangements can be made regardless of the sand specification required for eitherwet or dry materials. REMco SandMax crushers will produce a finer discharge grading than all other VSIcrushers. Additionally, control of the grading curve can be achieved by changing chamber type and rotor configuration. Different materials will respond to the variables of the machine in different ways.

To achieve the best crushing and shaping results,RockMax crushers should be operated as 3rd or 4thstage finish product producers. REMco RockMax crushers are configured to handle coarser feedsand produce a higher percentage of their discharge in the middle range sizes. RockMax crushers use different chamber inserts, lower operating RPMs and coarse crushing rotors.

When crushing milder, less aggressive type rocks, greater single pass reduction can be achieved by usingan anvil type crushing chamber. REMco ST/AR crushers produce a greater percent passing the sievesizes from 1 1/2" to 3/16" (40 mm to 5 mm) in a single pass. As the anvil chambers wear, there will be a gradual coarsening of the crusher discharge. In more abrasive materials, this may happen in days or weeksand may be noticeable by the increase in circulating load. In milder, less aggressive rock, this condition maytake months or years to develop.

NOTE: It is recommended that all circuits using REMco VSI crushers be arranged to include protection from uncrushables by using magnets or metal detectors. Ample size vibrating screens are necessary for optimum crusher performance. Using a surge preceding the crusher and a variable rate feeder willenhance performance, maximize production and provide the lowest wear cost per ton.

Reduction RatioFor REMco crushers, the reduction ratio is calculated as the relationship of the maximum feed size to the desired product size. For example, with a feed of -2" and a product requirement of -1/4",the reduction is 2.0 ÷ .250 = 8. Maximum recommended reductionratios for REMco crushers are, SandMax - 16:1; RockMax -8:1; ST/AR - 6:1. Exceeding the recommended reduction ratio willinterfere with circuit balance and may reduce production.

NOTE: The capacities shown in these tables are in short tons, 2000 lbs., and are neither maximum nor minimum. Tonnages shown are based on processing sound rock, stone or ore in a welldesigned processing circuit with proper feed controls and adequate screening. Many factors effect capacity, such as individual fracture characteristics, type of rotor, size of drive motor(s), feed moisture content, etc. Producing multiple sizes simultaneously will reduce total net tons of finished product. All capacities are based on 100% screening efficiency.

REMco SandMaxVSI crushers are designed to produce a finer discharge gradingthan other VSI machines. Controlof the discharge grading curvecan be achieved by adjustingrotor velocity (rpm), alteringchamber volume and the densityof the chamber load. SandMaxmachines use larger diameterrotors with more ports.Additionally, control of microfinesproduction can be achieved byaltering rotor geometry andchamber insert details.

REMco RockMaxVSI crushers are configured tohandle coarser feeds and produce a higher percentage oftheir discharge in the middlerange sizes. RockMax crushersuse different chamber inserts, lower operating RPMs and acceptcoarser feeds. The larger modelsare capable of feeds sized smallerthan 100mm (4”). RockMax crushers are recommended whendifferential crushing or shaping isthe principal reduction task.

REMco ST/ARVSI crushers produce a greaterpercent passing in the sieve sizesfrom 1 1/2” to 3/16” (40 mm to 5mm) in single pass. Feed sizes canbe coarser and less well graded.Great consideration must begiven to the abrasives content ofthe rock feed. Typically, ST/ARcrushers are recommended forcrushing limestone and materialwith a low content of silica, alumina and iron. Various anvildesigns are available.

REMco VSI Crusher Discharge Grading Information

The discharge grading of a REMco VSI crusher is depend-ent on many factors. When all of these are considered, usingthe correct application process, a REMco VSI can be configured to any 3rd or 4th stage minerals reduction task.

The discharge of rock-on-rock machines will contain someparticles which may range in size up to the original feed size. All particles fed will experience some reduction. This makesthe rock-on-rock type of chamber best for producing a cubically shaped particle. Rock-on-rock chambers producevery consistent discharge gradings because there is little orno chamber wear. There is no discharge grading loss due tothe wearing of rotor parts.

For REMco crushers fitted with anvil chambers, there willbe a gradual coarsening of the crusher discharge as the anvils wear. In more abrasive materials, this will happen quickly and it will be noticeable by the increase incirculating load and reduced production of net product. In

9

milder, less aggressive rock, this condition may take months or years to develop.

Due to their great versatility and model range, REMco crushers can be custom configured to the crushing task. Theabove graph illustrates the variation that can be expected in the discharge grading from the three different REMcocrusher types when processing the same feed.

REMco cautions prospective crusher users to not depend on typical catalog gradings when seriously considering theircrusher selection. A formal crushing test is strongly recommended prior to final model and type of VSI selection.

REMco Customer ServicesWhen a new crushing circuit is being considered it is important to determine the crushing characteristics of therock or mineral to be processed. Proper testing can establish the design parameters for new crushing plants toensure that the desired product quantity and quality can be reliably produced by the equipment selected.

The only way to predict crushing costs with certainty is to establish the abrasion rate of thematerial to be quarried and crushed. From thesoftest limestone to roughest silica, wear ratesand the resulting crushing costs can be ascer-tained, by a REMco crushing test.

REMco provides crushing tests to prospectivebuyers of REMco crushers. These crushing testservices are generally performed on a no-chargebasis for standard tests. REMco uses a model 200VSI with 75 hp and VFD drive for these tests. Thiscrusher can be arranged in a wide variety of con-figurations for test purposes. For accuracy intesting, it is essential that the right quantity ofmaterial is provided. For more information aboutthese services, please contact REMco.

SANDMAXROCKMAX

ST/AR

SANDMAX/ROCKMAXIMPORTANT APPLICATION

INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES

■ The capacities shown in this catalog are for fully autogenous rock-on-rock VSI crushers only and are neither maximum nor minimum. Tonnages shown arebased on processing material in a well designed processing circuit with automated feed controls and adequate screening. Many factors effect capacity, such asrock hardness, type of rotor used, number of rotor ports, rotor speed, size of drive motor(s) feed moisturecontent, etc. For metric capacities, multiply by a factor of .9.

■ The sand capacities shown in this catalog must be adjusted to allow for removal of all excess minus 100mesh when washed sand is desired. Amount of minus100 mesh produced is mainly influenced by the grainstructure and crushing characteristics of the rock.

■ REMco recommends conducting a crushing test prior toapplying SandMax/RockMax crushers or designinga manufactured sand circuit. Contact REMco for detailsand/or to schedule such a test.

■ Water in feed in excess of 3-5% will reduce crusher performance, cause chamber packing, raise powerdemand and increase parts wear raising the operating cost.

■ Maximum recommended feed size will vary dependenton type, hardness and shape of rock or ore to be crushed.Larger, angular feeds will reduce capacity; finer, cubicalfeeds will increase capacity. All feed size designationsshown are for a maximum one-way dimension of the rockpieces.

■ SandMax/RockMax crushers can be operated inopen or closed circuit. Closed circuit operation will pro-duce the best results when crushing for optimum particleshape. Closed circuit operation will also yield the greatestnet product and the best final product grading.

■ The information contained in this catalog is provided asan application aid to assist the producer in maximizingthe potential of SandMax/RockMax crushers. No performance guarantees are expressed or implied. To determine the effect of individual conditions, contact REMco.

The above applies to all SandMax/RockMax modelsshown in this catalog. REMco reserves the right to changethe capacities and specifications contained herein withoutprior notice.

REMCO ST/AR VSIIMPORTANT APPLICATION

INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES

■ The capacities shown in this catalog are for crushers usinga rock lined rotor and an anvil chamber and are neithermaximum nor minimum. Tonnages shown are based onprocessing material in a well designed processing circuitwith automated feed controls and adequate screening. Many factors effect capacity, such as rock hardness, typeof rotor used, number of rotor ports, rotor speed, condition of anvils, size of drive motor(s), feed moisturecontent, etc. For metric capacities, multiply by a factor of .9.

■ The capacities shown in this catalog are for crushingsound, competent stone. Larger, angular feeds will reducecapacity; finer, cubical feeds will increase capacity. Whencrushing to produce improved shape, slower speeds maybe utilized. This will increase the crusher feed rate andlower reduction achieved.

■ REMco recommends conducting a crushing test prior toapplying ST/AR crushers or designing a crushing circuit.A chemical analysis test of the material to determine abrasive content is also recommended. Contact REMcofor details and/or to schedule such a test.

■ Water in the feed in excess of 3-5% will reduce crusher performance, cause chamber packing, raisepower demand and increase parts wear raising the operating cost.

■ Maximum recommended feed size will vary dependenton type, hardness and shape of rock or ore to be crushed.

■ ST/AR crushers can be operated in open or closed circuit. Closed circuit operation will produce the bestresults when crushing for optimum particle shape. Closedcircuit operation will also yield the greatest net productand the best final product grading.

■ The information contained in this catalog is provided asan application aid to assist the producer in maximizingthe potential of ST/AR crushers. No performance guarantees are expressed or implied. To determine theeffect of individual conditions, contact REMco.

■ ST/AR machines are recommended for use in low abrasion, less aggressive materials. When the total abrasives content of the rock (silica, alumina and iron)exceeds 15%, operation may result in unacceptable operating wear costs. In these instances, REMco stronglyrecommends the use of a rock-on-rock chamber as inREMco SandMax and RockMax models.

The above applies to all ST/AR models shown in this catalog. REMco reserves the right to change the capacitiesand specifications contained herein without prior notice.
