Citizen Survey Indicates Most Important IssueToday is Attracting Businesses To Diversify Tax Base The results of the Citizen Survey that was conducted in June 2013 indicated that Friendswood residents stated the most important issue facing Friendswood today is taxes/diversifying the tax base. Regarding commercial development, almost half of the residents weren’t aware that Friendswood’s sales tax was lower than in surrounding communities. Eighty-eight percent of respondents said it is important to attract businesses to Friendswood and the types of businesses preferred are restaurants, retail, hotels, recreational facilities, and small independent businesses. He graduated from the University of North Texas in Denton and earned his law degree at Southern Methodist University. Alton was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 1971 and moved to Galveston. The three-story, 4,500 square foot dwelling was built in 1938 for the cost of $32,000. Designed by Houston architect Henry A. Stubee, the house was built for local church and business leader, Cecil Brown and his wife Frances. The French eclectic style house was the first and only brick residence in the area for many years after its construction. The Browns were from pioneer Quaker families and had wanted a sturdy home that would endure a hurricane. About the benefits of having his business in downtown Friendswood, Alton says “Our offices are conveniently located for our clients and provide a comfortable atmosphere to consult and advise on minor or extremely complicated legal matters.” The firm now has ten employees, four who are attorneys that are licensed not only in Texas but Georgia, New York, and New Jersey specializing in personal injury litigation and general civil trial law. This includes trucking, auto, train, plant premises, and product liability lawsuits. Alton has seven children that all graduated from Friendswood High School. After moving to Friendswood from Galveston in August of 1975, his family lived in the Sun Meadow subdivision because they could not find housing in Alvin that met their needs. “On the second day of school for my twins who were in the third grade, I went to pick them up and they came to the car with Friendswood Chiefs’ football equipment.We were hooked on Friendswood and never regretted moving here. Friendswood, as its name suggests, was founded upon the fundamental principles of the importance of religion, family, and education. It is an economically and intellectually sophisticated small town.
