SEMANTICS FIELDS

SEMANTICS FIELDSContThe concept of semantics fields is that a class or a group of words divide the semantics field or word. The words that divide the semantics field of a word are mutually exclusive, which mean that every word that belongs to the class or the group has its own meaning which cannot be used to substitute for the meaning of the other words in the group.

MetaphorsIn the metaphorical use of words, the meaning of a word is not the literal meaning of the word, but the transferred meaning or the derived meaning. The derived meaning of the word may differ from one language to another. Some example of metaphors are: Conta. WordDog Transferred meaningA worthless, wicked and bad tempered manb. WordPig Transferred meaningA dirty , greedy or ill- mannered personc. WordAss ( donkey ) Transferred meaningA very stupid persond. WordRat Transferred meaningA person who desert a cause that he thinks is about to fail

Metonymy Another type of transfer of meaning is called metonymy. According to Fromkin, Rodman and Hyams in Wagiman, metonymy is a word that substitutes for an object the name of an attribute or concept associated with that object ( 2007 : 192 ). Metonymy is concerned with substitution. These examples below are taken from Fromkin, Rodman and Hyams, (2007 : 192 ) and Leech ( 1981 : 217 219 ).ContMetonymyCrown Brass Gridiron Diamond Ice
