The Miss Oak Harbor Scholarship Pageant was an eye-opening experience. It changed my perspective of the stereotypical pageant outline and brought opportunities for volunteering and getting even more involved in

my community, knocking at my door. I hope participating this year will bring the same experience to these fabulous ladies, and also change their perspective about the pageant world! Good luck ladies, you’re gonna rock it!

Sydney KoslowskiTEEN FIRST PRINCESS

The number of opportunities this pageant has given me is truly amazing. My past year in reign has been such a wonderful experience that I will never forget, and I can’t thank the Oak Harbor community enough for their tremendous support! Good

luck and best wishes to the 2017 contestants!

Paige JacksonTEEN SECOND PRINCESS

Paige served the Oak Harbor community by volunteering at many events throughout her reign as Teen Second Princess. The Pageant Wyse Board of Directors thanks her for contributing to the program and wishes her success as she

continues to make a name for herself at Oak Harbor High School.

Mara PowersMISS OAK HARBOR 2016

Participating in the Miss Oak Harbor Scholarship Pageant was a very rewarding experience, and I am grateful for the many opportunities my reign presented—from riding in parades and serving food at the Military Appreciation Picnic to fundraising for the MOH Service Project and helping to develop and

produce the Miss Pioneer Way Pageant for young girls. I have enjoyed representing my city as Miss Oak Harbor and am excited to crown the new Miss Oak Harbor 2017.

Resego MookiFIRST PRINCESS

Initially, I was quite skeptical about participating in a pageant because it was something entirely out of my comfort zone, but it was a decision I will always be glad I made. I developed a camaraderie with the other contestants that I will never forget and was fortunate

enough to be crowned 1st Princess 2016. It has been a pleasure working alongside my fellow royalty in our wonderful community, and I will truly miss it. I take with me fond memories, valuable skills and more confidence. I extend a huge thank-you to Pageant Wyse, and I strongly encourage all young women in the area to participate in this program!

Breanna GrehanSECOND PRINCESS

The Miss Oak Harbor Scholarship Pageant was such an enriching overall experience. Through the pageant, I gained so much more than a scholarship. I acquired extensive volunteer experience, lots of friends, and immense self-confidence. My favorite

moment during my reign was helping the Miss Pioneer Way participants get ready for their own little pageant. The scholarship money I earned will go towards my college tuition at Western Washington University where I will study English in the Fall of 2017.

“Being in a pageant is not just about beauty. It’s more about service to the community and being a role model and making a difference. It’s being proud of your city. It’s all what you put into it…”

Judges & Interviews Miss Oak Harbor 2017 ~ 5

INTERVIEWSDuring the pre-pageant phase

of competition, contestants received interview training which they put to use during a personal interview with a panel of judges.

Contestants were scored on their greeting and introduction, their

self-confidence, persuasiveness, enthusiasm and candidness in answering questions, and the overall impression they gave.

Thank you to our panelists for volunteering their time.

Miss Washington 2016Alicia Cooper, Miss Washington 2016 and 3rd Runner Up to Miss America 2017, is a 22-year-old senior at Washington State University–Vancouver, where she is pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science, specializing in Personnel Psychology/Human Resources, with a Professional Sales Certificate and a minor in Psychology. She will be taking a year off from school to promote her platform, “Live on Purpose: Defining Your Legacy.” Alicia has worked closely with a program pioneered by a low-income middle school, called Project Legacy. The two main components of this program are educating

students on how to leave a positive and long-lasting legacy, and using positive reinforcement to recognize students who choose to make good decisions. During her reign, she will continue to share this message at schools across the state. Alicia has earned nearly $40,000 in scholarships during her time competing in the Miss America Scholarship program. Follow her year on social media @missamericawa.

MOH SCORING 101The Miss Oak Harbor Scholarship Pageant scoring system is the most comprehensive and objective model that one is ever likely to find. It incorporates ten categories, all weighted equally, and is designed to honor the whole person.

All contestants participate in the same 6-week program and are scored using identical models. 9th- and 10th-graders compete for the title of Teen Miss Oak Harbor, while 11th- and 12th-graders compete for the title of Miss Oak Harbor.

Pre-pageant points, which account for 70% of the overall score, were earned in Academics, Attendance, Interview, Physical Fitness, Promotion/Fundraising, Service and Work. Pageant-night points—30% of the overall score—are awarded in Stage Presence, Speech/Talent and Formal Wear.

Contestants are ranked in each category, based on the number of points they earned. Added together, these ranks determine overall position in the pageant. Like cross country or golf, the lower the rank total, the higher the overall placement at the end of Pageant Night.

History

Pageant Wyse Board of Directors

What you see on stage tonight is a culmination of meetings, brainstorming and an intense commitment to develop a truly unique opportunity that began in November 2014 when Jes and River started working on the first Miss Oak Harbor Scholarship Pageant. Over 6:30am Saturday coffee meetings and late-night email exchanges, they worked tirelessly to present the first pageant in May of 2015. They had to beg and cajole for those first nine contestants! Mollie Brodt joined the small Pageant Wyse

Board in April 2015, and the pageant grew to 18 contestants in 2016. Shannon Lonborg joined the Board in November 2016, and the 6:30am meetings continued. Within three years, the pageant has grown to its maximum size of 25 contestants. Thanks to the efforts of this small group of women and tremendous community support, this year the Miss Oak Harbor Scholarship Pageant will award more than $12,000 in scholarships and awards.

Our MissionOur mission first and foremost is to provide scholarships for young women interested in the advancement of their education,

through the spirit of a competition that embodies the four points of the crown: scholarship, service, success and style. Our intent is to inspire personal and professional growth through the development of leadership, communication and marketability, challenging participants to serve their communities through volunteerism along the way. Our hope is that participants gain confidence, self-

esteem and a sense of accomplishment that will enable them to serve as role models for the youth of their community.

Success is made of hard work and a positive attitude. Congratulations 2017 Miss Oak Harbor contestants!
