    NEED TO KNOW

    LARGE GROUP | 20 minutes

Since we’re talking about the power Jesus has over life and death (and everything) today, think of a time you’ve seen God’s power. When kids come into the room, start asking them about what it means to be powerful or what power looks like to them. Be ready to share your story!

    ACTIVITY 1 | 10 minutes

Start Large Group about 10 minutes into the service. Introduce the Big Idea, Jesus has power over everything, and tell the story of Lazarus. Find the Bible story in John 11.

    ACTIVITY 2 | 10 minutes

Play a secret blinking tag game.

    ACTIVITY 3 | 15+ minutes

Draw pictures of powerful things and discuss the story.

Pretend to be Lazarus by wrapping each other up in toilet paper!

  • Jesus has power over everything!

    SMALL GROUPS | 5 minutes

Break into small groups and personally connect with kids. Here are some questions to prompt conversation: What was the best or worst part of your week? What’s the funniest or saddest thing that happened this week?

    ● Video: 5 Minute Countdown Timer

    LARGE GROUP | 10 minutes

    ● Video: 10 Second Countdown (1 minute)

SAY Jesus can tell storms to stop, and they do. He can tell one lunch to become enough food for thousands of people, and it does. And today, we’re going to hear about something that shows how Jesus has power over anything, and everything. And that’s our big idea!

    ● Slide: Jesus has power over everything!

SAY This story starts with Jesus’s friend, Lazarus. One day, Jesus heard that Lazarus had gotten really, really sick. Jesus was in a whole different city, and back then they didn’t have cars or buses or planes, so he couldn’t go see him right away.

SAY But Jesus knew that even though Lazarus was sick, and even though everyone else was really worried….God was still in control, and has power over EVERYTHING. And because Jesus is God’s Son, he has power over everything too.

SAY When Jesus finally got to Lazarus’ house, he found out that Lazarus had been dead for four days! Mary and Martha were both so sad, and they wished Jesus had gotten there sooner, so he could have made Lazarus better.

SAY Let’s watch a video, and see what happens next! We’ll see how Jesus takes something really sad–like Lazarus dying–and uses it to show how powerful God is!

    ● Video: God’s Story / Lazarus (4 minutes)

SAY Can you believe it? Jesus brought his friend back to life! Imagine what that must have been like–what would you think if you saw that happen!? (Let kids respond.) When Lazarus came to life, people saw that Jesus had power over life AND death. It showed people that Jesus really was God’s Son. He did something that ONLY God could do!

    RESPONSE TIME | 5 minutes

SAY So what does this mean for us? Do you think Jesus can have power over OUR lives too? He sure does. Jesus has power over everything, and that includes all the hard things we go through. So when we need Jesus to show his power, and help us with something hard, or help us to not be angry, or to give us bravery and strength…..how can we ask him for help? (Let kids respond.) That’s right, we can just ask him ourselves! Anytime, anywhere.

SAY Let’s all ask Jesus for power right now. As we watch this music video, think of one thing that you can’t do on your own. And just like Jesus was able to raise Lazarus from the dead, he can help you with whatever you need!

    ● Music Video: Freedom (3 minutes)

SAY Jesus, thank you for having power over everything, no matter how big or small. Please help us with the things that make us stressed, or sad or angry. Amen!

BLINK AND WINK | 10 minutes

    Stay in one large group.

    ● Video: 10-Minute Countdown Timer

    ● This game requires some setup before the activity begins. Secretly pick one kid to be the “blinker” and one to be “Jesus” (If necessary, do it early in the hour, before kids are paying attention. Or, have everyone close their eyes at the beginning of the game, and choose the “blinker” and “Jesus” then.)

    ● Have all the kids join together, standing in one large group. As they walk around the room, the kid designated the blinker will BLINK at other kids. If a kid is blinked at, they have to freeze in place, and now they are “dead.”

    ● The kid who is “Jesus” will also be walking around. He can WINK at the “dead” players and they will “come back to life.”

    ● Pick a spot for the kids to gather once they are “alive” again. See who can last the longest without “dying.”

    ● Both the blinker and Jesus should try to avoid giving away who they are and other players should not say who they are once they know!

    ● After the game, discuss: During our game, players were “dying” when the blinker got them. Would it make it less scary to die if you knew that Jesus was there to bring you back to life? Who is the most powerful person you know? How do you feel knowing that Jesus how power over everything, even death?

    SUPPLIES

    PREPARE

    ● Markers ● Large sheet of paper (1 per small group)

    POWERFUL THINGS | 10 minutes

    ● Split into small groups or stay in one large group.

    ○ Video: 10-Minute Countdown Timer.

    ● Lay out a large sheet of tear off paper and markers, and tell kids to draw pictures of things they think are really powerful. Encourage them to use their imagination. Vehicles, superheroes, real people, animals, lightning, etc.

    ● After giving them a few minutes to draw, ask:

    ● Would you like to share what you drew and why it is powerful?

    ● Is Jesus more powerful than what you drew? Why? (Be prepared to help with suggestions.)

    ● Think for a minute before you answer this one. What do you hope that Jesus has power over? (Leader share your own thoughts to start.)

  • ACTIVITY 1 ACTIVITY 2 ACTIVITY 3LARGE GROUP

    SUPPLIES

    KNOW IT

    ● Toilet paper roll (1 per group of 6 kids)

    ● Why do you think Jesus didn’t go to Lazarus right away? Why was Jesus sad when Lazarus died? What did Jesus do when he was sad? Have you ever been sad that someone died?

    ● Who did Jesus say would get the glory when Lazarus came back to life? What does it mean when God gets glory?

    ● Be ready to discuss with kids that Jesus has power over everything, but sometimes bad things still happen to us. We live in an imperfect world, and people make wrong choices. But Jesus still has power over everything, no matter what.

SAY Lazarus died, was wrapped up, and buried in a tomb. And then four days later, Jesus brought him back to life! Let’s play a game and wrap our own “Lazarus”!

    ● Have one kid on each team be “Lazarus”.

    ● Each team must take the toilet paper roll and completely wrap Lazarus (they can wrap up the kid all together, or individually wrap the kid’s legs, arms, etc.)

    ● When finished, each team yells “Lazarus, Come Out!” Lazarus must then walk from one side of the room to the other, and then unwrap himself (or if it’s more fun, have kids help unwrap).

    ● Extra time? Give kids a maze or a word-search activity sheet.
