Microscopy UnitStation Training

Using compound light microscopes, your goals today are to:

1. Learn how to use the light microscope.2. Learn how to measure a specimen and field of view.3. Learn the parts and their functions.4. Learn more about current microscopy.5. Complete all exit slips.

Your group of 4-5 students will begin at one of six stations and rotate, when told, to the next station. Station 1 rotates to Station 2, Station 2 to Station 3, and so on. Station 6 will rotate to Station 1. You must turn in the required worksheet/exit slip after completing the station training.

Station 1: Students will work together to review the parts of a compound light microscope. You will need to complete the Station 1 Worksheet, due at the end of your rotation, which will serve as your exit slip. You will receive one copy for the group, as well as a copy for each student. Record the same information on your copy as on the group copy. All exit slips (the group copy and individual copies) are due before you move to station 2.

Station 2: Students will work together to “Label the Microscope.” Begin with the laminated diagrams and practice as a group. You may use your textbook or other resources found at your station to confirm your selections while practicing. Near the close of your stay at station 2, you will need to secure your own copy of a blank diagram and correctly match the parts to the labels on your diagram, this time without help or aides. These diagrams are your exit slips for this station and all students are to turn in their own exit slip.

Station 3: Students will work side by side, but not together. Each of you will select two articles to read silently and will be required to write a one-page summary covering both microscopy articles. Your summary is your exit slip for this station and is due before you rotate to station 4.

Station 4: Students will work together to look up and confirm the functions of the parts of the compound microscope. Resources available at the station are for use by the group. Each student is responsible for completing an exit slip (a matching worksheet) before rotating to station 5. No resources or group members may help you fill out your own exit slip.

Station 5: Students will work together and select one slide to view under first 4x (red) scanning power and then 10x (yellow) low-power magnification. When you have confirmed which of the three photos, located at the station in an envelope, you have on your selected slide, raise your hand and confirm you are correct. Then label the parts of your specimen like the one from the envelope. These individual drawings are due as exit slips before you rotate to Station 6.

Station 6: 4-5 students will work together to measure any five of their own items in centimeters, and then convert those measurements into millimeters and micrometers. Worksheets with item names and measurements in cm, mm, and μm are due before you rotate to Station 1.
