ObjectivesEffective learning simplified Chinese anywhere and anytime

IntroductionWith the importance of China development and interlinking to HK. It is essential for HK people to learn Simplified Chinese language (written form) and Putonghua (spoken form). But the busy life prevent most from learning in classes with fixed time and place. Fortunately, the availability of 3G anywhere, anytime and in personalized multimedia content can become the excellence media for overcoming this. User can view or receive language learning content in any desired time and anywhere, a multimedia short clip of material. It contains rich media experience, with graphics and video, Chinese traditional form and simplified form for comparison, as well as the correct stroke order animation for learning writing. In addition, the character, word or even short phrases in Putonghua speech can be heard. Video of teacher speaking is possible for lesson such as BoPoMoFo. Also, video conference with tutor is possible for interactive one-to-one lesson on request. In this way, the user can learn written and spoken Chinese language through the 3G platform.

Innovation in the Application(s) & ServicesWith personalization for user preference of learning way and habit, together with video conference to break the location barrier. This application explore new way of language learning activities.

Overview of the Service(s) which consists of core and additional featuresThe core service consists of learning various simplified Chinese characters, through comparison of Traditional and Simplified form, and Putonghua sound. There is additional feature of stroke animation

Overview or summary of the ServiceWith user selection of service and preference of learning content, the system will periodically send a MMS for learning Chinese with text, sound, graphics and animation.

Possible alternatives to deploy the service and the analysis doneThe service may be applied to GPRS with MMS support, although the user interface for subscription and enrolment will not be as good as 3G.

Description of software, hardware and servicesBasically software based, with server to store content, and service engine for user profile and record.

Recommendation for future improvementWith some game and exercise. Also, provide online tutor for individual help and charging mechanism.

Project planning for Service implementation scheduleWeek 1 to 3: Interface specification between mobile network operator gateway and content serverWeek 4 to 5: Work with service provider, for gateway detail and pre-developmentWeek 6 to 10: Content server implementationWeek 1 to 11: Content and MMS constructionWeek 11 to 12: Final integration and testing

HK Smart ID card Chinese system:Project description: Automatic conversion from TrueType to Bitmap, with different size of 16x16, 20x20, 24x24. Generate log file for operation record (in Text file format) Generate Delta file for incremental update of font and input method table Delta file contains internal code, character shape and input method code Delta file can be accessed by original software, for modification. The system can use original system and channel for distribution For Chinese Windows 3.1, the internal code within Delta file is BIG5, which is converted from

Unicode, by the routine within our software. The conversion process also consider the mapping information between ISO10646 and HKSCS of ITSD.

Delta file contains several input method information, including CCC, Cantonese, Pinyin, ChangJei, and Simplified ChangJei, according to the original formation and ordering

For user easiness of font editing, the system uses predefined area of BIG5 and Unicode for character location. If the user select illegal code, alert message would be given.

System architecture for the software:

10

Flow: Using Font editor for create/modify character in TrueType native format. During save, the editor would save delta file (for Win2000/NT) and would also convert the

TrueType character into bitmap format, with code conversion from Unicode to BIG5 (with LOG file for history), and saved as delta files in another folder.

If there is no corresponding BIG5 code, a warning message would be displayed. Upon confirmation for that case, only LOG file would be updated, no bitmap would be generated.

There would be 2 set of delta files, one for Windows 2000/NT and one for Windows 3.1 Delta files for Windows 3.1 would be manipulated in previous way for backward compatibility. Delta files for Windows 2000/NT would be manipulated by merger software in Windows

2000/NT environment
