Market Rasen Leisure Centre, West Lindsey

Location: Lincolnshire

Value: £4.3m

A new dry leisure centre in this Lincolnshire market town. The facility includes: a fitness studio, exercise studio, 4-court sports hall, café and external 3-G pitch. Consideration has been taken for future expansion, which subject to funding could incorporate a swimming pool. The site at Gainsborough Road is surrounded by Listed/Heritage Buildings and therefore the external appearance needed to be sympathetic to the area. The site forms part of a larger Green Wedge designation that is identified in the Local Plan.

The building design provides high-quality, flexible, and well-considered new accommodation, which will benefit both the users and the local community. The footprint has been dictated by the site constraints and the internal layout reflects the detailed

requirements of the leisure centres proposed organisation.

The building is arranged over two storeys, with the activity spaces on the upper floor, providing scenic views across the site and the Café area is a double height space with a feature staircase adjacent to the entrance. A constant visual connection is provided throughout the building, connecting the users inside and out. Circulation space has been minimised to create an efficient building footprint and maximise the area of the site that can be given over to landscaping.

The Lichfield Street Hub, Walsall

Location: Walsall

Value: £4.1m

The refurbishment and remodelling of the Grade II Listed Walsall Central Library and its 1965 extension, achieves a flagship, central hub of cultural and social learning, incorporating the Central Library, Local History Centre, Archive Collections, Reference and Children’s Libraries, a café and ICT lounge.

Listed in 2015, Historic England cited the Edwardian Baroque architecture of James Gibson, as well as the HC Fehr carving and ornate plaster ceilings as principal reasons for the listing. Our design embraces the existing features to showcase the building in its original form and incorporates the reinstatement of the original tiled wall, once situated behind the main stairs and the main entrance.

The interior design solution juxtaposes period detailing and design references with modern furniture and graphics. The collaboration of our interiors and graphics teams has generated a new identity with a sophisticated orientation and wayfinding strategy with is both mature and fun and creates an appealing environment for all users, regardless of age.

Rushcliffe Civic and Leisure Centre

This project enables a leading borough council in Nottingham to co-locate its offices, civic facilities and main leisure centre onto one site, improving the efficiency and quality of public services in the area.

Rushcliffe Borough Council will move into 2,000 square metres of open plan office space and new civic facilities including Council Chamber, Leader’s and Members’ Rooms and associated meeting spaces. In addition to the council buildings, local people and staff will benefit from a new leisure facility located in the heart of the West Bridgford community.

The building has been designed to secure improvement in the efficiency and quality of delivery of public services and to transform the leisure

provision for this part of the Borough. In addition to being highly efficient, co-locating the two facilities provides Borough staff with a great leisure facility on their doorstep that includes a large gym and 6 lane 25m length pool.

Energy efficiency is a key design driver, a fabric first approach has been adopted using PassivHaus principles of exposed thermal mass, super insulation combined with mixed mode ventilation. The building also has a rooftop PV array.

Central FireStationNottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service requires a new Central Fire Station due to impending re-development of its existing site.

The site is located on London Road, a major arterial route into Nottingham. The location is strategically important to the fire service because it can provide a good response time to an emergency in the City Centre as well as support to the wider fire response network.

The site is in the Southside regeneration Zone, an area undergoing significant change, In response to this the proposed form and building fabric represents an attractive modern addition to the Southside area whilst maintaining use of the historical materials that prevail in the local context.

Sustainable features incorporated in the building include photovoltaics on the roof and a connection to the district heating system; together these features exceed the local authority requirement for 10% of the building’s energy demand to come from renewable sources.

HMS Belfast

This visitor centre for HMS Belfast greatly expands the landside facilities of this historic visitor attraction; it is located between the riverbank and the ship, sitting on an existing platform that stands on stilts in the Thames.

Situated in the middle of one of London’s greatest tourist and historical locations, the building enhances the connectivity between the ship and the riverbank at Queen’s walk and through its retail offer, generates additional income.

The building contains retail space, admissions control for the ship and a ‘baristo’ style café and rooftop bar with amazing views towards Tower Bridge, the Lord Mayor’s Office and the City of London.

Our client, the Imperial War Museum now has an elegant single storey glass and steel pavilion with a rooftop bar that is proving particularly popular with

office workers from the surrounding office buildings.

Location: London

Value: £1.2m

Lord Ashcroft Gallery, Imperial War MuseumThe refurbishment of one of the principal galleries at the Imperial War Museum, which is a Grade II Listed building located in the Southwark Conservation Area. The project made the gallery ready for the installation of the Lord Ashcroft collection of Victoria and George Crosses.

The project focuses on improving the environmental performance of the gallery and thus the visitor experience. Improvements are achieved through the upgrading of the services strategy and the improvement of the air-tightness and thermal insulation of the building fabric.

The South facade now has a double glazed conservatory acting as a passive solar collector and all mechanical and electrical services have been replaced. New internal finishes coordinate with the exhibition displays.

Aston CSCThe Aston Joint Service Centre (JSC) showcases the concept of improving public access to services through the concept of a building that offers a single point of contact not only for Local Authority Services but also for access to a wider range of community services including a new Health Centre, Pharmacy and Library.

The Centres have been a huge success in providing 2500sqm of space for council service delivery to the local community in an informal, modern and efficient way.

This building has instantly become a local landmark standing out in crisp black and white brickwork; it also embodies current thinking in sustainable design, taking advantage of maximised daylighting, super-insulation, high thermal mass, natural ventilation and renewable energy technology in the form of a roof mounted photovoltaic array.

Carnegie MuseumThe Carnegie Library in Melton Mowbray was built in 1905; the museum that now occupies the building has an established profile in the town and county with a high number of repeat users, both locally and across the country.

Previously full to overflowing; following refurbishment and extension the museum now has an additional 280sqm of gallery and support space.

Located adjacent to a Conservation Area, the design is the result of close collaboration with the local Conservation Officer and uses building materials that are in sympathy with the context.

The two storey extension provides for the a new ground floor gallery to display its growing collection of rural history material, and on the first floor education rooms to host workshops, lectures and voluntary work placement

opportunities, offices and WCs.

Huntingdon LibraryPart of The Walks, a comprehensive redevelopment of a section of the central Huntingdon Conservation Area, the brief for the new Huntingdon Library and Archive calls for a bulding that not only improves the cultural and educational life of the town but also to make a forward thinking and exciting statement about its future.

The library service wishes to open itself up to the people of Huntingdon and to be as open and inclusive as possible, this is the key driver for the architecture of the building. The front elevation is in large part a glass wall, opening up the full extent of the open plan interior to the observer in the street.

Within, the space is simple and lofty with tall floor to floor heights and an impressive staircase climbing to the first floor. The design of the library includes a feature tower acting as a gateway to the town centre.

The building comprises a library, café and IT learning suite. At first floor level the library contains fully BS5454 compliant facilities to house the historic Huntingdonshire Archive.

Combined Justice CentreA new build Combined Justice Centre for Her Majesty’s Court Service, part of the competition winning ”Walks” Masterplan by CPMG and developer DE Clegg, in partnership with Cambridgeshire County Council. The building is one of the first in the country to co-locate Civil, Magistrate and Crown Courts under one roof.

The design team has exercised considerable skill in successfully knitting a large modern building into the townscape of a historic market town. The design was developed through close consultation with the Local Planning Authority, Historic England, Local Interest Groups and CABE.

The project necessitated detailed discussions with Historic England regarding the adjacent Grade 2* Listed Walden House in whose garden the court building is constructed. This

project is an example of the concept of enabling development whereby the repair and refurbishment of Walden House was secured through allowing development within its grounds.

In addition to the court rooms and public areas, the building incorporates offices, retiring rooms for judges and juries and a custody suite with secure loading dock.

Rugby Museum and Art GalleryThe new art gallery, museum and library offered an opportunity to produce a major civic building in the heart of Rugby town centre. In its competition-winning design, CPMG Architects seized this opportunity and designed a building of imagination and quality.

The triple height entrance, behind a curved glass facade, allows extensive views into and out of the public foyer. This creates the feeling of an open invitation into the building and also acts as a formal backdrop to the town square that was planned as part of the wider town redevelopment.
