There will be wine, beer and food demonstrations as well By Ronnie Narmour [email protected] Three Chords and the Truth Happy Memorial Day and wel- come to festival season. I have some shows to tell you about and several outdoor festivals to recommend. The weather couldn’t be nicer in our part of the world and it’s time to get outdoors and hear some great music. The line-ups at these festivals are remarkable and well worth the ef- fort. Also, check out the abundance of live music shows in the LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT box at the bottom of the page. As we go into season here on the Gulf Coast, the talent gets better and better. So get out there and support live music. There’s plenty of it. But, right now time’s a wasting…let’s roll! Hi Defs The Hi Defs (Austin, TX) played the Back Porch on Friday, May 13 th . This band is the great funk band, Min- go Fishtrap, without the horn section. It is led by Rog- er Blevins, Jr. on vocals and guitar. His father, Roger Blevins, Sr., plays bass. Then they have funky drums, funky congas and funky keys and are one funky outfit. Blevins (that would be the younger Blevins) tells me this configuration (without the horns) gives them the liberty to do some cool old R&B and soul covers, plus funky jazz tunes they wouldn’t ordinarily do. They were flat nailing everything from James Brown to Donny Hath- away to The Meters. Big Rog plays a very funky bass with tons of funky fills as does Roger, Jr. on his great, funky guitar; and with a tight percussion section and strong funky vocals I gotta say, this band sizzles (and they’re funky). On July 15 th they’ll be back with the horns as Mingo Fishtrap. I’ll tell you where their funky name comes from then. Dave Miller Dave “Bottlehead” Miller played Hooks-B-B-Q on Saturday, May 15 th . He had J.D. “Mr. Mo” Moore on acoustic guitar and Ken Barnett on Djembe drum. I heard earlier in the evening Cody Angel had jumped up, but I got there late and only caught the last set. This lit- tle late night scene at Hooks is starting to take on some tread. They have some cool local talent playing there on the weekends (Rich Lockhart, Jack Gant, Norman Leever, Luis V, etc) and frequently somebody on stage is tearing it up. On this night, Bottlehead was it. Mo sound- ed pretty good behind him and Kenny Barnett was in the pocket…but it was Bottlehead’s show and he was on. I like what’s gelling over at Hooks… it’s sounding good in there. The Gaff Beer Pizza Belt Sander Races (361) 749-5970 as a raffle. The musical line-up for Saturday is: Lighter Ray (4-6 pm) and Westbound (7-9 pm) and for Sunday: Cody Angel (4-7 pm) and the great Joe Ely (8-11 pm). Joe Ely (Austin, TX) is the big news here. This is the last regional show that Ely will play before leaving on an 18 city tour in June that will take him up and down the East Coast in support of his new CD, Satisfied At Last. Ely, a Lubbock native, has released 30 records since 1978. The pride of Port Aransas High School, Cody Angel, will open the show. Rockport Music Festival (June 9-11) I’ll go into great detail about the artists performing at this festival in the next issue as it’s still several weeks out, but, I’ve still got to mention this stellar line-up so you can make plans now: Delbert McClinton, Malford Milligan, Willis Alan Ramsey, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Gary P. Nunn, Casey Donahew and Cory Morrow. It will be held at the Ful- ton Harbor Park and admission is $30 a day. Go to www. rockportmusic.com for information. And that’s the truth!
