3Com Networked Telephony:Profit from Experience
Thirty years ago, researcher RobertMetcalfe had a vision that there was amore cost-effective method of connectingcomputers so that people could bettershare information and be more produc-tive. His pioneering work revolutionizedcomputer networking—creating bothEthernet technology and the multi-billion dollar world-leading networkcompany, 3Com Corporation.
Seven years ago, our goal was todevelop a dedicated set of telephonyproducts that would operate reliablyacross data networks. This innovativesolution is called Networked Telephony.3Com NBX networked telephonysolutions were designed from theirinception to harness the power,
flexibility, and the value of a datanetwork without sacrificing thereliability and familiarity of atraditional telephone system.
Today, 3Com provides customers withone of the most cost-effective ways touse Ethernet networks to improveoffice telephone communications.NBX solutions eliminate the need forseparate data and voice cabling plansand greatly reduce installation, operation, and management costs.
Award-winning 3Com networkedtelephony solutions support a widespectrum of business configurations.Whether required for the smaller singleoffice or larger virtual campus, thesesystems offer enhanced capabilitiesand sophisticated applications thatcost less and do more than traditionaltelephone systems.
3Com® SuperStack® 3 NBX®
Networked Telephony Solution
The 3Com SuperStack 3 NBX NetworkedTelephony Solution has the intelligence, power, and flexibility for managing themost demanding requirements oforganizations in one or many locations.Thousands of businesses have discoveredthat networked telephony is a betterway to handle voice communications. Now with fourth-generation software,it delivers powerful call processing, afull set of built-in applications, andan ever-expanding suite of optionalapplications—all designed to providebetter value and investment assurance.
Reliability You Can Count On
What makes networked telephonysolutions so compelling is 3Com'sability to harness the power andflexibility of a data network withoutsacrificing reliability.
Reliability is achieved by isolating thetelephone system functionality fromeveryday issues associated with desktopPCs and servers. Telephones share thedata network with PCs and servers, but don’t use the PCs or servers forvoice traffic. It's like operating twocars on the same highway—even ifthe PC stalls, the voice traffic canpass by unimpeded.
The foundation of the SuperStack 3NBX platform rests on 3Com high-availability hardware, as well as ona real-time operating system that isso reliable it is also used in heartpace-makers. The latest digital signalprocessor (DSP) technology powersphones and other components in theNBX system, assuring that every deviceis capable of maximum performance.
By using a superior architecture, 3Comhas leveraged decades of networkingexperience to assure a networkedtelephony solution that stays out ofthe breakdown lane.
Easy to Install, Use, and Manage3Com understands that most phonesystems seem like a mystery to every-day users and often to the staff assignedto administer them. The result is lostproductivity and lost opportunity.
An incredibly intuitive administrativeportal, 3Com NBX NetSet™, letsindividual users and administratorsfully customize the SuperStack 3 NBXsolution to meet their individualrequirements. This password-protected,browser-based utility features pull-downmenu choices tailored to each facet ofthe system. Organizations of all sizes willfind time-saving tools that simplifycreation of departmental profiles formanaging telephone users. Adding orchanging capabilities is fast and easy.
3Com voice communications technologycompletely eliminates the high costsand high anxiety normally associatedwith moving an office telephone.Anyone who has ever had to waitdays for an expensive service callmerely to get a telephone moved willtruly appreciate the self-locatingcapabilities of NBX phones. Simplyunplug a phone from one locationand plug it into another network jack. The user’s extension number, voicemail, and personal settings move withthe phone. It's that simple.

“Our experience provesthat organizations withthe most demandingcommunication needscan rely on an IPinfrastructure . . . IP hascome of age as anindustrial strengthnetwork infrastructure.”
Gillian Clark, IT, Halifax Cetelem Credit Ltd,
United Kingdom
NBX NetSet offers control over frequently usedcapabilities, such as adding speed dials or creatingoff-site notification options for voicemail messages.
Choices for Today, Flexibility for the Future
Open Architecture
It starts with a foundation of IEEE802.3 Ethernet that lets users plugNBX phones into millions of Ethernetports around the world. The systemgrows by adding industry-standardswitches and routers, expanding insize and capabilities as demands arise.Organizations choose the type of con-nectivity best for them, from wiredor wireless LANs to multisite WANs.
NBX solutions use a diverse set ofstandards-based interfaces to assureeasy integration of new applications. As business objectives change, NBXnetworked telephony providesapplication flexibility, including:
· IMAP4 enables users to view andlisten to voice mail with standarde-mail clients (e.g., MicrosoftOutlook, Eudora).
· TAPI for built-in computertelephony integration (CTI) letsusers dial numbers and manageactive calls from a computer screen.
· TAPI/WAV supports seamlessconnections to call center andunified messaging applications.
· H.323 is used for connectingmultiple sites or third-party devices.
3Com actively supports a host of third-party developers that write softwareapplications to enhance the capabilitiesof an NBX platform. 3Com NBXSolution Providers offer numerous out-of-the-box solutions as well as thosefor custom business requirements.
Upgradeable Software
Business needs inevitably change, sothe 3Com SuperStack 3 NBX solutionis software upgradeable, making iteasily expandable and flexible. Newfunctionality, even documentation, can be offered minutes after it becomesavailable and can be automaticallydispersed to every system device anduser. If business needs dictate
additional capabilities, they can beadded simply with software licenses.
Traditional PBX products requirecustomers to pay extra for capacitythat may never be needed or forcapabilities only available on thelargest platforms. The SuperStack 3NBX solution is a pay-as-you-growplatform that is economical for twentyusers and powerful enough for morethan a thousand users per site.
Better Solutions for MoreThan One Location
Many organizations are challenged bythe need for communication betweenstaff and resources that are spread acrossmultiple locations. These requirementscan be as basic as connecting officesacross the street, or as sophisticatedas linking multiple campuses acrossthe world. 3Com offers affordable andscalable solutions to help dispersedoffices communicate seamlessly.
NBX solutions let businesses dramat-ically reduce intra-company long-distance phone charges, while improv-ing customer service. By leveraging adata network that today may only movee-mail and files, users can affordablycall between sites, transfer callers, and send voicemail messages to oneor more users located in multipleoffices. These capabilities yield faster, easier, more effective communicationsand customer service.
