The 2017 Prairie Festival is just
around the corner! Our thought-
provoking theme this year is
Urban Agriculture and Rural
Agrarianism - Toward a Perennial
Future.
We’ll hear from Severine von
Tscharner Fleming of The
Greenhorns and Farm Hack,
Cathrine Sneed of The Garden
Project, Wylie Harris of Seis
Flechas Farm and
zlem Alt ok
of the University of North Texas.
Wes Jackson, Brian Donahue,
Fred Iutzi and others will also
speak.
There will be a panel of
contributors to the recent
book Letters to a Young Farmer,
including Verlyn Klinkenborg
and Amigo Bob Cantisano,
moderated by Stone Barns Center
for Sustainable Agriculture’s
CEO, Jill Isenbarger. An
informative conversation about
the commercialization of Kernza
will also take place. As always, our
science team will share progress
made in the last year, followed
by afternoon plot tours (weather permitting).
New this year Independently owned food trucks will have a variety of selections for sale throughout the weekend. Offerings will include dishes prepared with bison meat from the herd pastured on our land.
Participants are always welcome to bring their own food and beverages. The lunch break will be extended to allow time to purchase and eat meals either on site or at restaurants in the vicinity.
Another new addition: supervised activities for children (recommended for potty-trained through age 13), Saturday from 8 a.m.- noon, 1-5 p.m. Art projects, nature exploration, and videos
will be offered in the Research Building atrium.
Saturday morning, we’ll offer an optional Kernza pancake breakfast, cooked and served by a local church group. Free-will donations will be accepted
to offset costs of the pancake breakfast and the children’s activities.
Returning features Most traditional events remain on the schedule: the barn dance, bonfire, nature walk, sunrise yoga, art gallery, Saturday evening entertainment and Sunday morning music in the Big Barn.
We’ll provide an electronics charging station in the Red Barn and water stations throughout the grounds.
Works by Kansas City, Missouri, artist Karen McCoy will be on display in our art gallery.

As in prior years, the Festival kicks off with Friday evening’s barn dance and bonfire (weather permitting). Presentations begin Saturday morning and conclude shortly after noon on Sunday. The bookstore and art gallery will be open on Saturday and Sunday.
Good things to know:Pets are not allowed. Camping is available on the
property, but campfires may not be allowed if there is a burn ban in effect. There are no electical or water hookups. We do provide
solar showers, port-a-potties, handwashing stations and trash/recycling barrels. Campsite choices will be more limited due to the construction of our new greenhouse just south of the Research Building.
Kansas weather is unpredictable this time of year. We recommend dressing in layers, having rain gear and sturdy shoes handy.
Bringing sunscreen and bug spray is always advised.
Registration is available online: www.landinstitute.org, under the “events” tab), by mail, or
by phone (785.823.5376).
The website also offers a list of
nearby hotels, Kansas airport
and other transportation
information. Packets will be held
for pick-up at our Registration
Tent beginning Festival Friday
afternoon.
We will live-stream the speakers
on our website for those who
cannot attend. CDs will also be
available following the Festival.
