Democrats Hire Twitter-Thug To Monopolize Social-Networking Campaigns

This investigation was prompted after being directed to an article written by Anthony G. Martin of the Conservative Examiner dated September 9, 2010, titled: “New Evidence Exposes Government Spying, Attacks on Conservatives”:

This article points out the creation of a new website, Tea Party Tracker - http://www.teapartytracker.org - that serves to collect instances of racism within the Tea Party group. It utilizes a Twitter stream and encourages people to find racist incidents and report them using the hashtag #teapartytracker, which the website then captures in real-time for their readers.

In what appeared to be a one-sided, biased attempt at slandering the Tea Party as being the sole bearer of racism and hate speech and tying them to random tweets that could be from anyone on Twitter, I decided to stream in opposite findings of hate speech that I have accumulated from the left-wing crowd on Twitter. The left-wing primarily utilizes the hashtag #p2 and often cross-tweets to #tcot to intentionally provoke conservatives.

My stream was apparently not appreciated. After I tweeted the truth of what I encountered, I found myself, or rather my monikor ZAPEM, quickly added to an “Enemies of the Government Hit-List” as referenced by the article written by Mr. Martin in the sub-link that goes to a blog written by Greg W. This so-called “Hit List” was a Flickr account registered by someone named WingnutWatch that listed names, including the rock-star Ted Nugent, as enemies of the government. The entries included personal names, tweets and real-life photographs of the alleged offenders. The links were then broadcast all across Twitter and The Daily KOS.

The screenshot below is a capture of a portion of the streams I sent to the hashtag #teapartytracker on Twitter, that in turn, showed up on the Tea Party Tracker website. A full list of the tweets I made containing other interesting information is included in the footnotes. 1

In addition to the hate speech evidence found, I also included the “whois” look up on the domain, Teapartytracker.org. That domain appears to be registered to Blue State Digital, Joe Rospars (Co-Founder of Blue State Digital), who helped create My.BarackObama.com:

About the time that Tea Party Tracker appeared on the internet, I discovered that @wingnutwatch on Twitter was not long behind. In fact, they're about two weeks apart:

I tweeted the above to my followers and decided that “WingnutWatch” was worth looking into further. What I originally thought was a team of juveniles disrupting #tcot, turned out to be much more and was directly linked to a person hired to run social-media campaigns for incumbent Democrats and progressives seeking office - Neal Rauhauser of Progressive PST – http://www.progressivepst.com.

In the meantime, I contacted the copyright division over at Yahoo who also owns Flickr and was successful in having them remove at least my information from WingnutWatch's so-called Government Hit-List. WingnutWatch may claim on Twitter that he has hidden the accusatory information, but the truth is, he was cited for harassment, copyright and ToS violations as I was in direct contact via emails with the company during the same time they granted the request and the pictures disappeared.

WHO IS WINGNUTWATCH?Among other evidence collected, probably the most self-admitting revelation as to who the persona “WingnutWatch” belongs to can be found by the man himself, Neal Rauhauser, who lists the monikor in his biography page at Tweet Progress (http://tweetprogress.us) and again in his Twitter profile page (http://www.twitter.com/strandedwind). (Neal Rauhauser primarily uses an account on Twitter that goes by the name @StrandedWind.)

This first screenshot is from the profile of @wingnutwatch on Twitter. Note that it directs people to the Flickr website, where he maintains what is left of his “Enemy Hit List” after the previous version was taken down by Yahoo: http://www.flickr.com/groups/wingnutwatch/

The second screenshot shows the profile of Neal Rauhauser as submitted to Tweet Progress, a progressive association site for Twitter users. Note that he lists @wingnutwatch, among others, in his bio:

I now had three links tying @strandedwind and @wingnutwatch to the personality known as Neal Rauhauser, but I'm adding a bit more here to show the connection between him and his dealings with the Tea Party Tracker in a deliberate attempt to demonize conservatives in the Tea Party before I go into his more involved connections with the Democrat incumbents and candidates.

During a scan, I found out, for starters, that on September 4, 2010, @wingnutwatch tweeted to @lisarpepper, letting her know that his account was active:

These tweets, together with the screenshots, should more than establish that we're dealing with the same individual identified as Neal Rauhauser.

The next thing I attempted to do was engage @wingnutwatch personally. Below is a short summary of that exchange:

WHO IS NEAL RAUHAUSER?

Neal Rauhauser

In short, Neal Rauhauser is the sole owner of Progressive PST (http://www.progressivepst.com), a website that boasts the capability of projecting advanced exposure for democratic incumbents and progressive candidates within the social-networking hub of the internet.

What the website does not disclose is that Neal Rauhauser is not only engaging in activity that advances his political clients' interests, but engages in a full-out assault against people associated with the Tea Party using an alternate Twitter account, @WingnutWatch, in which he fully cooperates with the Tea Party Tracker agenda and then reports it in articles he writes for the Daily KOS.

Rauhauser's Linked In profile lists the following consistencies in that regard:

Before we got into the particulars of Progressive PST, we took a deeper look into Neal Rauhauser's past.

He is in his mid-forties, a native of Iowa who married Nancy Nogg, Assistant Dean in the UNOmaha College of Business. The couple resided in Omaha, Nebraska.

We assume this marriage didn't last as we found public property records not only transferring a property deed from Neal Rauhauser to Nancy Nogg-Rauhauser, but also a name change for her that reverts back to the maiden name of Nancy Nogg in the last entry:

In 2001, Neal R Rauhauser lived at 91 Rural Route #2, Graettinger, IA 51342 - He had a FCC Reg. Amateur Radio License. His Call Sign: K0BSD, Previous Call Sign: KC0JZS, Licensee ID: L00334096 Grant Date: 04/14/2001, Expiration Date: 04/14/2011 Status: ACTIVE

Per Rauhauser's Linked-In profile, he states:

“I spent my adult life working as a software developer and network engineer.”

Although he's not a programmer, he claims to dabble in PERL and FreeBSD. He also claims to hold a CCNP & CCDP certification from Cisco. This qualifies him to troubleshoot networks and administrate routing techniques. This type of background also sends up the red flag for potential hacking qualifications, which pans out later in this report.

By May 2006, he is writing articles for ComputerWorld (http://features.techworld.com/networking/2492/beware-the-networking-counterfeiters/) and appears to have a promising future in Networking Engineering. He owns a company by the name of Layer 3 Arts,4089 South 84th Street Suite 233, Omaha, NE 68127, (402) 408-5951, boasting $1M - $10M in yearly sales.

But a year later in May, 2007, he is employed by a different company:

But by the summer of that same year in 2007, Rauhauser contracted Lyme disease after being bitten by a tick. He writes:

Lyme disease knocked me flat in the summer of 2007. I was largely disabled for eighteen months, hospitalized repeatedly, and homeless part of the time. I wrote relentlessly on DailyKos that year and have the makings of a good novel.

Shortly after this, Rauhauser writes about his venture with Stranded Wind Initiative and others.

On 1/1/2008 I founded the Stranded Wind Initiative, an NGO focused on development using wind resources in areas that lack transmissions lines . The best use of stranded wind power is making ammonia; I published the National Renewable Ammonia Architecture in the spring of 2009 and the Illinois Institute of Rural Affairs will publish a policy paper based on this in the summer of 2010.

I was well enough to return to work 1/2/2009. That fall I ventured to Netroots Nation and in the closing hours of the event we founded the Blog Workers Industrial Union & Benevolent Society.

The BWIU runs a jobs bank for its members, there is a training program that features SalsaLabs tools among the mix of organizing technologies, a book exchange, and a couple of for profits have spun out of the group including Progressive PST, our social media consulting operation.

We arrived as a force on the national scene in the spring of 2010, participating in many high visibility House primary races, landing our first Senate campaign in Arizona, and gathering resources needed to support various initiatives.

Something is going to come out of all of this between now and the 2010 midterm elections and I do believe there is something more to come after that. Keep watching this space and I'll update as I can.

NUDE PHOTOS, FETISHES & FRIENDS?

Maybe we can help Neal update his extremely transparent, risque life that he seems to enjoy publicly airing from one end of the internet to the other. In this section, we explore his penchant for photography, political limelight, cats, a few friends and a strange fetish for women's feet and shoes.

Then I will wrap up this investigation as it's now 4am and I promised to have it out after work.

There is more, but these are the highlights. I'll try to include links at the end which I didn't get time to explain. I concluded the report with a section on the company Stranded Wind Initiative, which is incidental, but also helpful in understanding the mindset of Neal Rauhauser.

THE SHOE CREWNeal Rauhauser loves to take pictures and apparently has a predilection for shoes and women's FEET! This is a short sample. We couldn't possibly have fit the entire collection in one .pdf file. It's included here to help explain the connection to the Rauhauser Twitter account, aptly named: @TheShoeCrew.

We left out the signs of the Clearance Sales. Yes, he took pictures of that, too.

As far as we know, Rauhauser is unaware that anyone from the Tea Party has located this collection.

NETCATWe found this interesting picture among the http://www.flickr.com/photos/avyakata collection.

This kitten was photographed by Rauhauser after meeting a homeless person with this cat in his bag.

The interesting part is, this is the same photograph used by the name @smartgirlpower on Twitter. The name is an obvious slam against the conservative women's group, Smart Girl Politics.

In addition to it being the same photo, we discovered that a piece of malware code was embedded into the smaller version of this picture, which was used by @smartgirlpower on Twitter. By bringing up the profile page and going directly to the URL where the copy was stored, a Norton Security Warning alerted us to the fact that this .jpg file contained a security risk named NETCAT.

Looking at the picture below, you will see the red X on the first picture on the left, indicating the alert. On the right side is the threat report that Norton issued.

We also found packet sniffer programs pictured in Rauhauser's photo collection. These programs can and are often used to hack into a computer.

FRIENDS

Beth Becker and Joe Sestak

Meet Beth A. Becker. She is the co-Founder of Progressive PST owned by Neal Rauhauser.

Beth is known as @spedwybabs on Twitter, among various other aliases.

While we're still investigating her, we believe she and Neal Rauhauser recently moved to Rantoul, Illinois and that they room together. Beth is previously from Pennsylvania. It's unclear if they are a couple or just partners. However, it is very clear that she knows of the Twitter operation that Rauhauser is engaged in against the Tea Party in an effort to manipulate and goad any Twitter user into racist or violent outbursts and then readily stamp them with the Tea Party tag and viral it out to The Tea Party Tracker, Daily KOS and their Flickr sites and blogs.

She appears to be the more public person for Progressive PST while Rauhauser is the brains behind the computing end. There are numerous photos of Becker at conventions, campaigns, posing with various government officials and so forth in the aforementioned photo gallery.

Progressive PST works in much the same manner as we see other campaigns being set up within the social-networking hub. The candidate creates a verified Twitter account with a subsequent Messaging Twitter account. After a candidate posts an update, the Messaging account disseminates the information to their followers and hashtags pertinent to their cause. Links afford additional passages for copying the same information to Facebook, Digg, AddThis and every other assorted means possible. In this manner, information travels fast and this is what Progressive PST advertises it will do for their clients, improving their KLOUT scores (influence).

However, what Progressive PST also does for their clients is directly attack the opponent's message and any messengers they encounter within counter-groups in an effort to discourage them from proceeding. Tactics include embarrassing them personally and relentlessly in an effort to frustrate them into quitting the social network. If they are successful in making the responder upset to the point where they also become belligerent, Progressive PST will attempt to get them banned from the network.

This was the case with Joe Ballard, a conservative Pastor who had a Twitter account and had the misfortune of meeting Neal Rauhauser. The letter below should speak for itself as to what he encountered and subsequently reported to David Cozad via his official website.

What Mr. Ballard is unaware of, is that his letter was forwarded and somehow, wound up in the photo collection of Neal Rauhauser.

I went searching for Mr. Ballard after finding this communication. He used to be a follower on my LISTS. Unfortunately, the insidious political game must have gotten the best of him and the account no longer exists. I do not believe he was suspended as this man was the epitome of graciousness. I believe he received no response, was continually harassed and felt he had no choice but to quit.

His email is provided. I didn't take it upon myself yet to get in contact with him to try and find out what happened. If no one else offers, I think someone should.

This is just one example that I can actually prove where well-meaning people who genuinely want to be involved in the political process and be informed, are ruthlessly attacked by this organization until they leave peacefully or forcefully. The question is: Do Rauhauser's clients know about it?

As I am writing this report, I glance at my Tweet Deck and am reminded again, how bad the situation has gotten via another message: “@Zapem Thank you for your listing, but can you pls take me off your lists? Ppl are taking snapshots of tweets and I want this acct pvt. - @AtAthena”.

WHAT IS STRANDED WIND?

Neal Rauhauser, adopted as child and of French ethnicity, is a Buddhist and self-described “mild-autistic” suffering from Lyme disease, lies on the floor curled up in the fetal position after a recent session of acupuncture. The circled marks are apparently from a treatment involving suction cups.

Rauhauser is a Global Warming advocate that entered into a business known as Stranded Wind Initiative which he describes as, “a non-profit organization that finds uses for wind energy”. A check on his academic education on the subject however, came up empty. Short of an unscientific 6,500-word background paper titled, The National Renewable Ammonia Architecture, that covers the history of human fertilizer production, he is referred to only as a “blogger and researcher”. Nothing was found in the way of a title prefix or suffix that would remotely suggest his professional or academic qualifications.

What's more is that the website http://www.strandedwind.org that supposedly encompassed his alternate-wind-energy views can only be found in an archived version on the internet. It is apparently now a defunct operation, at least as far as his internet upkeep of the site is concerned. Or perhaps he intentionally took it down as he moved further into the political circle.

The archived version has very little in the way of research and appears to be more of a syndicated forum fetch:

The http://www.strandedwind.org domain was registered on December 15, 2007 and expires on December 15, 2010 according to a whois look up:

Attempts to access the website were erratic. Most attempts yield an error at least one other time, we believe we were redirected to Neal Rauhauser's Facebook page:

One of the most recent activities regarding his wind energy solutions online was in February, 2010 where he was invited to speak for an Agroinnovations Podcast and in which the 6,500-word paper on Renewable Ammonia Architecture, was his means of introduction:

In this podcast, Rauhauser made this disturbing and vaguely sinister conclusion:

I don't think the earth tolerates as many of us as there are very well. I think that there's probably not a tidy solution for this; – for the haul of the human species. I hate to be all doom and gloomy on a Thursday mid-day, but that population over-shoot is going to get corrected and Haiti is probably the first model of what that's going to look like.…

I look at the news and I really think we're too late for the whole world and if we don't get ourselves in gear here in very short order, [we're] too late for anything other than a mess here like the collapse of the Soviet Union.

If I'm understanding the beginning of the podcast correctly, he finds a use for fertilization techniques within human remains and I hate to guess what he has in mind.

Despite the lack of credentials, Rauhauser eagerly throws himself into the fray of political enthusiasts that view capitalism as the source of unsolved energy gaps and socialism as the solution. These views overlap into the political spectrum via his blog at the Daily KOS:

Offline, Rauhauser appeared in a newspaper article posted March, 2008 by Michael Tideman, a Staff Writer for the Estherville Daily News in Iowa. Rauhauser showed up during Senator Grassley's

appearance at the Estherville Rotary seeking continued funding for wind-energy projects.

The online version of the story is dated March 21, 2008 and is also written by Michael Tideman. However, the title changes to: Grassley tackles partisanship, other issues:

Once again, nothing is said regarding the credentials behind Rauhauser's plight. He appears to be nothing more than a lobbyist in search of political connections that can guarantee funding for his alternate-energy views at the taxpayer's expense.

Someone needs to vet these lobbyists a little better, especially when they turn activist and start running social-media campaigns for government officials or would-be officials that have their finger “on the button” and our futures at stake.

Campaigns should never be run by a person running multiple agendas by:

1. A person that offers social-media success via a for-profit company he owns while doing double-duty as a Daily KOS contributor and in said capacity, takes great pleasure in smearing any opponent he personally takes issue with;

2. A person who exhibits a hatred for conservatives and is hell-bent on finding a prison cell for each and every American citizen he can attach to his warped and incorrect interpretation of the Tea Party premise via an organization known as The Tea Party Tracker that purportedly seeks to “establish dialogue”; and

3. A person who was never vetted as competent to take on such roles; whom we find out has multiple internet persona's exhibiting multiple personalities, often times revealing violent tendencies and threats for retribution; has various medical conditions and is consuming large quantities of medications that he himself has entered into the record:

We aren't doctors. We make no representation regarding the medications pictured in these photos prescribed to Rauhauser. However, we do note the erratic change in personality we ourselves have encountered, particularly the devious scheming against conservatives and the threats to physically come after those, by his own admission, who would publish his nude photos which present quite a different side to the person known as Neal Rauhauser, the hypocritical “peace advocate”.

It remains to be seen how many people were aware of Rauhauser's multiple personalities and refused to sound the alarm as he went down the road of political entrepreneur, hooking up with Beth A. Becker to stand as his co-Founder in Progressive PST and whereby they both solicited politicians into a program overflowing with deplorable campaigns against citizens who don't share their political views.

Perhaps Ms. Becker, the Daily KOS, Twitter, FaceBook, the F.B.I. and the political clients of Progressive PST may be able to answer these and other important security questions of national interest.

I'm Neal Rauhauser, @StrandedWind. Iowa State software engineering back when - dodged a punchcard programming class by one semester. Cisco Certified Network & Design Professional for a decade, recently lapsed as the cert is devalued at both resellers and in general due to their failure to protect the brand. I pay the bills operating a rural triple play carrier.

I'm a founding member of the Blog Workers Industrial Union, which came together at the end of Netroots Nation 2009. We've spawned Progressive PST, a social media consulting operation for Progressive Democratic candidates & causes. PeanutButterPAC is another offshoot that I'm only tangentially involved with, and we're chipping away at a workflow management system that is Twitter enabled.

We very purposefully don't have a web site for the tools we build. Some of the BWIU are quite activist and they draw attention to themselves - we don't want to bring that kind of heat down on our hosting. Any complex data is prepared for the back end in Google Docs and access is triggered by commands in direct messages to controlled Twitter accounts. The security model is implemented using private lists. Results and logs return from the gmail accounts associated with a particular set of Twitter IDs. Those operating the systems have no idea where the backend servers are physically located. Twitter tolerates us having two whitelisted IPs, only one of which is active at any given moment. The systems are quite geographically diverse and we've been doing a good bit of cross training.

We've got low frequency, high value automated message placement - think public service announcements for political campaigns and such. There's a one to many direct message utility that permits the receivers to go onduty/offduty with a single message, no matter how many tasks groups they've joined. Applications accessible by API can be triggered remotely by non-technical users and they receive reports via email. None of this stuff is particularly complex - any elegant looking code we might have is due to Net:Twitter and the help Marc Mims has provided.

I am the resident programmer but you wouldn't have to follow me very long to learn that I'm wrestling with #Lyme. I'd really like to find some more stuff like Marc's Net:Twtter module - things that are simple to use, things based on perl, thing that behave if I want to put them in a chain of unix tools running in the background.

Oh, and we've got a couple of million plus users organizations that would

like us to do certain things, and I could really use an Oauth app but nothing off the shelf is going to fit my needs ...

Beth Becker will be joining me in Illinois. She is an extraordinary organizer who has risen from Pennsylvania state to national prominence over the last six months.

She was asking me today about the availability of a farmer's market and I think she'd be willing to staff a table at least part of the time. She is an experienced restaurant operator and would understand the wants of any cafe that might be asked to sponsor a portion of such an effort.

She and I will be at the next group meeting and we're available to talk by phone in advance should this be needed.
