gPreparation and applicationguidelines

At air temperatures below +4°Cmeasures should be taken to ensure thatall surfaces are free from ice or frost.

Some waterproofing membranes also actas gas membranes, please also checkthe Groundwork Engineering section.

Horizontal application - the membranemust be applied to smooth preparedsubstrate. Concrete blinding is preferredbut a well rolled granular fill with acompacted sand blinding is acceptable.The substrate shall be free from looseaggregate or other sharp protrusions.

Standing water must be removed toprevent contamination of overlaps andsubsequent compromise of waterproofproperties.

Vertical application - the membrane isapplied to formwork or adjoiningstructures.

Membrane installation

Cut the membrane to a convenientlength for installation. Carefully align themembrane and roll it out with the ribbedsurface uppermost. Lay adjacent sheetsaccurately so they overlap the previoussheet 75mm along the self adhesiveedge. When laying adjacent full rollsthere should be a stagger of half a rolllength to avoid a build up of end jointsin one area.

End joints and cut edges - butt join thesheets onto a detail strip. The topsurface of the join can be further sealedwith a liquid membrane and reinforcedwith mesh. This overseal should extend75mm either side of the formed joint.

All overlaps and joints should be firmlyrolled to ensure complete adhesionbetween layers.

If cold or damp conditions prevail theself edge adhesive may be madetackier by wiping with a solvent. DetailStrip may be gently warmed with aslack flamed gas torch or heat gun toremove moisture and promote initialadhesion in cold conditions. Thisprocedure may also be used to assistbending the membrane through 90degrees at the floor to wall junction.

Membrane Protection Boards

Protection Boards are a tough, flexiblebitumen impregnated cellulose boardused for the protection of waterproofmembranes against mechanicaldamage, pedestrian or vehicular trafficand abrasion caused by backfilling. Theboard is resistant to water, ground saltsand most corrosive chemicals. Theyshould be butt jointed and supportedduring backfilling. Membrane mastic,mastic tape or contact adhesive can beused to spot bond the board to themembranes. The joints should bestaggered and also staggered over themembrane laps.

Primer

All surfaces except those below groundbearing slabs and membranes shouldbe primed with one coat of Primerapplied at a rate of approx. 10m2 perlitre. A one part bituminous solution forbrush or spray application. Apply byclean brush or spray to the clean dryconcrete surface. Apply evenly andavoid pooling and over application.Allow to dry before laying themembrane.

Reinforcing Tape

Self Adhesive Reinforcing Tapecomprises of a cross-laminated high-density polyethylene sheet coated with

a Bitumen Polymer Adhesive and isfaced with a release sheet.

Adhesive Tape

Tape is a double-sided and selfadhesive and designed to be used inconjunction with the Protection Boardsto adhere it to dry surfaces ofmembranes. It may be used in ‘pads’150mm square, or in strips of suitablelength. It can also be used to adhere toother materials, such as polyethylenesheets or similar and to most ‘dried’membranes.

Detailing

The sheet membrane on its own doesnot offer the complete waterproofingsystem. To ensure watertight results,details like pipe penetration, up standsand coves have to be dealt with. Eachmanufacturer deals with these in adifferent manner and which mayinvolve liquids or granules.

Bentonite Granules

A high swelling sodium bentonite ingranular form which reacts when incontact with water and forms animpervious gel, used in conjunctionwith Waterproofing Membranes to forma fillet at wall to floor transitions andpenetrations through horizontalsurfaces.

Walldrain Slabdrain

WalldrainWalldrain consists of a cuspated lightweight plastic core bonded to a geotextile fibre filter. Thefibre will permit free entry of water, but not soil, and so prevent soil particles from cloggingdrainage systems. Walldrain is designed to be placed with the geotextile filter layer facing thedirection of the water seepage or backfill.

Procor®

Procor® is a two component, synthetic rubber, liquid waterproofing membrane. It cures to forma resilient, fully bonded elastomeric sheet. Procor® will protect structures against water andwater vapour ingress. At a single coat thickness of 1.5mm, Procor® will resist a hydrostatichead in excess of 20m when fully loaded. Damp surface tolerant, can be applied to greenconcrete and damp to touch surfaces.

Procor® 10: Trowelling grade for horizontal surfaces. Also recommended for verticalapplication at temperatures less than 12°C.

Waterstops and Waterplugs

Prevention of water ingress andoutgress into a structure is of vitalimportance. This section showsproducts that stop the flow in twodifferent ways.

Waterstops.

The prevention of ingress duringconstruction, they are cast intoconstruction joints and take fourdifferent forms;

• PVC strips cast centrally or on theface to provide a physical barrier tothe passage of water (see FosrocSupercast)

AT SystemAT System waterstops have been specially developed for water excluding andretaining structures such as basements, reservoirs, sewage treatment works, etc. TheAT System is an important advance in concrete joint protection which combinesActive Technology with the conventional mechanical properties of PVC waterstops.Conventional PVC waterstops work by the normal action of the concrete shrinkingaway from the joint and against one face of the ribs or bulbs of the waterstop. Thiscreates positive pressure on the rib or bulb causing a “valve action” to resist wateringress. However, this shrinkage movement also forms an inevitable void on theopposite face of the rib or bulb which can allow water under high pressure to trackalong the waterstop searching for a path to bypass the waterstop. Subsequentcyclical movement of the joint can compound the problem resulting in furtherleakage. AT System waterstops mechanical properties prevent water ingress by thesame valve action but also actively seal the void around the rib or bulb to stop waterbypassing or migrating. The hollow core of the bulb deforms to control the expansiveforces to prevent damage to the concrete.

It has been independently tested upto 30 metre head of water. It has full WRAS approval for use with potable water. Dual StopWaterstop has been specifically designed to seal construction joints against the ingress oroutgress of liquids in water retaining or excluding structures. It is fixed by nailing to the faceof the existing pour prior to placing the next pour. It is installed directly onto scabbledsurfaces and will swell into voids up to 12mm deep.
