Item 366-01 – Detained in Hong Kong – 1941, HK 15c, 5c tied by Victoria cds on cover to Winnipeg, large boxed handstamp “Detained in Hong Kong, By Japanese, from December 1941 to September 1945’’. Triangular purple “passed by censor 137” (b/s). Greeting card accompanies with “Major K G Baird The Winnipeg Grenadiers Force C Canadian Army Overseas” and has a short message to Orville for the new year. Major Baird, was in charge of a reinforcement unit, Wan Chai Gap. He was a POW at Shamshuipo, North Point and Argyle Street and received the Colonial Auxillary Forces Long Service medal. His information is available at the Hong Kong Veterans Association website including a picture of him. Also accompanying the cover is a copy of the Mutual Life Assurance publications “The Agent’s Bulletin” which tells his story of service, capture and repatriation. The issue is dated October 1945 and illustrates both the cover and Christmas card. Mailed the day before the Battle of Hong Kong and detained until the war was over. $1,850.00

A very elusive double rate registered Wilson cover. Ex Palmer. $400.00

Item 366-05 – Zéphirin Paquet – Quebec City – 1897, 3¢ Jubilee on Zéphirin Paquet advertising cover paying 3¢ letter rate to Fraserville (Riviere-du-Loup b/s). Paquet was an icon in Quebec City. He was in fur processing and the making of straw hats as well. It employed a total of 250 workers. He is listed in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography. Ex Bursey. $80.00

Item 366-13 – to Canadian soldier – South Africa – 1904, 2¢ Edward (2) tied by Vancouver duplex cancel on cover paying 4¢ double Empire letter rate to Garnet MacKenzie Odlum, Pretoria, South Africa. Odlum was serving with the 2nd Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment of Infantry. Reverse with annotation ‘’Dad mailed this after Garnet died’’, redirected to Johannesburg, Transvaal etc, unclaimed and returned to Canada via the Pretoria DLO and the Dead Letter Office in Ottawa. Item 366-42 – Germany to Camp C and Camp F – 1941, German cover from Bad Wilsnack to Internment Camp C Gravenhurst Ontario, the addressee had been transferred to Camp F at Fort Henry in Kingston. In Sept 1939, Fort Henry was a receiving station and temporary internment centre until the camp at Petawawa was ready for occupancy. Fort Henry opened as a camp on June 29, 1940 with the arrival of 600 enemy merchant seamen and German merchants from West Africa. The camp closed on Dec 20, 1943. $100.00 SOLD

Item 366-44 – Toronto steamboat, eastbound – 1843, stampless folded letter from Toronto to Montreal, put aboard steamboat with straightline “STEAMBOAT” to Kingston, rated 2/4 collect (double 1/2 rate from 301-400 miles). The letter from W Wilson, cashier Bank of Montreal, Toronto describes various banking transactions and drafts. The steamboat marking was only applied on eastbound mail. $400.00
