Since economic liberalisation, design has become a key element

for growth. As the markets are thrown open to globalisation,

unprecedented forces drive and redefine the architectural landscape

and the practice of design. New economic avenues combine with

the idea of modernity, giving rise to capital that needs and feeds

architectural practices. The profession has seen an aggressive

surge in demand and supply of architecture that develops from a

thriving capitalist market which supports and experiments with

fresh thoughts, attitudes and perspectives in design. Architecture

can no longer be identified and defined by expressions of the likes

of vernacular and modern. The ever-antagonistic attitudes of the

conservative architect against the progressive architect diminish

in a wave of optimism and pragmatism that defines contemporary

architectural practice. With multiple ways and means, multilateral

approaches and multidimensional practices, architects and

designers in India, and the world, venture into previously unseen

realms dealing with unprecedented unknowns and armed with

intense understanding of the new age. The 361 Conference 2012

will attempt to understand and debate on of the chaos and will

try to make sense of the ambiguous whole. The forum will try and

decipher the New Spirit in Architecture.

DOSHIFilm by Premjit Ramachandran. Produced by Hundred Hands.

In a career spanning almost 60 years, Balkrishna Doshis work has in many ways mirroredthe evolution of contemporary Indian architecture. Doshis first job under the Frencharchitect Le Corbusier, who designed Chandigarh, had a profound impact on him but he

has often sought to interpret Corbusiers modernism through local conditions of site, climateand available technology.

Two monographs have been published on Doshis work and he is regularly featured inarchitectural magazines. The scope of these printed articles is limited in capturing thespatial and qualitative aspects of his work and does not adequately present Doshis uniquepersonality and his philosophy. Film is the perfect medium in which to capture architecture -it covers the spatial narrative and sequence, the quality of light and the impact of movement. It is also the best way to engage a person like Doshi. Having a conversation with him is toimmediately understand his appeal and the reasons for his unique success.

Not only is his work as an architect seminal but his contributions to academia through thesetting up of the school of architecture in Ahmedabad and his own Vastu Shilpa Foundationare unparalleled. These successes are primarily due to his ability to communicate to andinspire the people around him, and his rigor as an architect. Both these aspects can besatisfactorily captured only on film. The film will not only introduce people to a truly greatmodern architect, but also to an evolved, cultured human being and help redirect ourattention to the truly important questions of our time.
