Special Moment and Service of Godspeed!

We are both excited and saddened that Sarah Kurbjuweit will be leaving us this month. Sarah has been a wonderful member, teacher and friend to many in the congregation and we have valued her time with us. On Sunday August 16th we will invite Sarah to our pulpit

and have her share both the good news of Jesus Christ with us all and also some of her future plans. This will

also be a time to say goodbye and Godspeed in her next adventures in mission. We’ll let her share that story

with you all but we all know she will be dearly missed. God’s blessings upon you Sarah!

Grace and peace to you in the name of our living and loving Savior, Jesus

the Christ!

Just after school let out in June I was visiting with one of Charis’ favorite

teachers about the time we’re living through these days and she said “Yeah, it is

like the 1919 Spanish Flu, 1930’s depression, 1960’s Civil Rights era all rolled up into one with a pending contentious political election on top of it all!” It has

certainly been a challenging few months.

And yet, one of the really beautiful lessons we learn from our faith is the importance of living into the situations of challenge and opportunity which we face. What I mean is, the incarnation was

both about how God was going to save God’s creation from the brokenness of sin but also about how

God was going to fully live into the reality of that creation’s world.

“We do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with

glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death

for everyone.” Hebrews 2:9

It is with this in mind that I’m going to begin an online Zoom book study this September, at a

time to be determined, using the book – The Invention of Wings, by Sue Monk Kidd. In this book,

Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life

beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but

she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.

Kidd’s sweeping novel is set in motion on Sarah’s eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership of ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys

over the next thirty five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other’s

destinies and forming a complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement and the uneasy

ways of love.

This novel looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through

women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression will hopefully help us better

understand the roots of the civil rights crisis we are facing today. And it is this compassion, formed and informed by our faith, that will hopefully help us find ways to understand the suffering of our

African American brothers and sisters.

So find a copy of the book, start reading it if you desire or wait until we begin together, and let us find a way to begin the faithful journey towards hope. For we know that when we understand

and experience the suffering of others that “suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces

character, and character produces hope.” Romans 5:3-4

This is the Day "Out of my distress I called on the Lord" (Psalm 118:5)

We are a nation in distress. We are a church in distress. The coronavirus has killed 103,000 of us. The virus of racism has taken hundreds of thousands more throughout our history. Now these two deadly viruses converge. Under this distress the veneer of equality has cracked and we see the pain, anger and frustration of those who have been denied the rights and dignity so many of us expect and often take for granted.

I have heard it said that slavery ended with the Civil War. Why don't people of color "just get over it." Here is the question we need to ask, "How do you get over something that isn't over?" The extrajudicial killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd that we have seen have laid open the wound in our country that has never been fully dealt with and has never healed. The officer's knee suffocating the life out of George Floyd "reminds us that blatant acts of intimidation, hatred, and violence continue" (Freed in Christ social statement, page 3).

Continued peaceful protests, vigils and demonstrations are not only legitimate but essential to move this country and this church to honest and deep self-examination. Just as the body of Christ is COVID positive, so is the body of Christ infected with racism and white supremacy. We cannot turn away from this truth. To deny it is dishonest and dangerous.

Let us stand with those peacefully protesting and acting responsibly. Looting and destruction of property does not further the cause of justice. Government has a role to uphold civil order while also a role to respect peaceful protest. There are those in law enforcement who are acting wisely, even while others have acted irresponsibly. I ask you to support the many people, including those in our church, who are working to de-escalate tensions between law enforcement, protesters and the community.

Psalm 118 continues: "I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lord's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it" (21-24). Christ, the cornerstone, has already broken down the wall that divides us. The time is now. This is the day.

• Montana is the fourth largest state in the U.S. with the 44th largest population.

• Montana is the only state in the U.S. with a Triple Divide, which allows waters to flow to Hudson Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean.

• Montana has more different species of mammals than any other state in the U.S. There are approximately 100 species of mammals, including elk, bighorn sheep, caribou, and bobcats.

• The Yellowstone River is the longest free-flowing (undammed) river in the contiguous United States. The longest river in the U.S. by miles, the Missouri River, begins in Montana at the “Three Forks”

• Flathead Lake is the largest fresh water lake west of the Mississippi River. Glacier National Park has 250 lakes in its boundaries.

• The famous fly-fishing movie “A River Runs Through It” focuses on the Blackfoot River in Montana, but most of the fishing footage was shot on Montana’s Gallatin River.

• Yogo Sapphires, found only in Montana, are considered to be among the finest sapphires in the world. Their “cornflower blue” color gives them one of the most true-blue colors naturally (without treating).

It is with a sad heart that we inform you that our office assistant, Heather, will be leaving us this month. Due to unforeseen circumstances she will be relocating to Colorado mid-way
