Christmas is a day for story telling and remembering. New Year’s Day is for renewing the story. What a story we hear from the Gospel of Luke 2: 1-14! The birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. It was in 1965 that this story was made even more famous in, of all places, a made for TV movie entitled: A Charlie Brown Christmas. The author was Charles Schultz, a Sunday school teacher and famous car-toonist. Charlie Brown begins by lamenting the commercialization of Christmas. He tries to get the Peanuts gang together to stage the true meaning of the holiday but it comes up short. He than laments, “Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?” Linus saves the

pageant by stepping forward grasping his security blanket. The precocious Linus begins touchingly to recite the very gospel we hear every Christmas, explaining the religious beginnings of Christmas. Almost imperceptibly Linus drops his blanket and closes with “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.” Linus does indeed drop his security blanket, letting go of worries, anxieties and inse-curities. This cartoon show speaks to the best of who we are. In 1965 it was the second most watched show of the week! Another story to remind us of Christmas is from Norman Vincent Peale who tells of a missionary in Africa who received a most beautiful seashell from a young student. She asks, “Where did you ever find such a wonderful shell?” The boy ex-plained that the only spot where they are found, a nearly inaccessible bay several miles away. When she realized the distance, the dangers of the jungle, the rocky cliffs of the coast he has covered…she said, “You shouldn’t have…how can I ever repay you in some way?” The boy responded, “O teacher, Long walk part of gift.”

Jesus too made a long walk for humankind – a long walk to humanity. Deity descended to a lowly stable. God went from being omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, to an un-known, unlearned baby born in poverty and wrapped in rags. And just as the missionary was unable to repay her student for traveling so far to bring her a gift of a seashell, neither are we able to repay God for his love and mercy to us. Again we hear the echo of Linus, “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

    Online Giving

St. Henry provides Vanco—a convenient and safe way to make a one-time or recurring donation. If you man-age your bills online, why not give to your church online? It’s safe and secure, and you decide exactly when your gift is made and where it goes. Getting started is easy—just visit our website wwwsthenrygresham.org and scroll the ribbon on the homepage, under “Support Us” click on “Donate Online”. When you participate, your gift will be securely transferred directly into the parish bank account. And you won’t have to remember to write a check or stop by the ATM on Sundays! Concerning Covid-19,this is a time of disruption for everyone, but we are also called to continue to live as faithful people of God. We encourage everyone to continue their normal weekly support if you can, as we work together to get through this. Several ways you can continue to support St. Henry; a check can be mailed through the US Postal Service, online giving through the “Donate” button on the webpage or call the office at 503-665-9129.

Question: I’ve seen people hang rosaries over the rear-view mirrors in their cars and a few of them wear them around their necks. Is it OK to do that? Answer: The practice of hanging a rosary or a religious medal off of the rearview mirror of one’s car is a fairly popular custom across many cultures. While there is no particular rule approving or condemning this practice, we should also be mindful of the respect and reverence due to religious objects and devotional items (i.e. sacramental's). An important point to consider would be the rea-son why one chooses to place a rosary or religious medal in our cars. Is it a reminder of the protec-tion and intercession of Mary and the saints? Does it encourage us to be mindful of God’s pres-ence, even in such a mundane task as driving? Is it an outward expression of our more private de-votions? One advantage of having a rosary or religious medal in our cars is that it can also serve as a reminder to pray when we travel, asking for protection for ourselves and for other motorists or

commuters. Certainly, invoking the protection and prayers of the saints is a wonderful prac-tice for families, helping to rein-force our belief in the commun-ion of saints and the care and concern we owe to one an-other.

What a year it has been! How will we speak of these times a decade from now? As time goes by, our im-pressions of this past year will certainly change. How we feel today about dealing with a killer virus and all the chaos surrounding that is still fresh for all. I would assume that most of us right now are also holding those we love a little closer and hugging them a little harder. Hopefully, even if the fears and concerns of 2020 dissipate in the future, the way we feel toward our family should never leave us. Stewardship is certainly about everything. God has given us so much, great and small, profound and com-mon. One of the greatest gifts that all have received is family. Families take all shapes and sizes and some look very different than others. For some, family is a caretaker or temporary guardian. For others it is a friend when everyone else seems to have vanished. The bottom line is that, to quote a song from many years ago, “people need people.” When God gave the world His only Son, the Incarnation did not come on a cloud or with a flash of light. He was born into a family. Jesus understood the gift of family all his life. Do you think that if having a family wasn’t important God would have still included this in the plan of salvation? As this year draws to a close, remember your stewardship many days begins and ends with the people closest to you. Don’t misuse or take for granted this precious gift. God gives us gifts on purpose, even to His only begotten Son.
