    Cuba-Related Research Collectionsin Miami

    In Louis A. Perez Jr.s work, A Guide to Cuban Collections in the United States,the author assembled an invaluable reference tool for scholars interested inCuba. Since the publication of the work in 1991, however, great strides havebeen made in the development of academic and scholarly resources in theGreater Miami areathe largest area of concentration for Cuban Americans. Inrecent years, the city has proved to be fertile ground for the support of academicscholarship on Cuba The following is a brief guide to Cuban collections foundspecically in the Miami area, as a way to update the information in ProfessorPrezs guide. The collections are listed in alphabetical order, by institution.

    Pedro Pan / Monsignor Bryan O. Walsh Papers

    Barry Universitys Barry Memorial Library is the home to this extensive col-lection of materials donated by the late Monsignor Bryan Walsh, the man who,as director of the Catholic Welfare Bureau, spearheaded the Pedro Pan cam-paign from its inception. Among the contents of the collection, which are stillbeing processed, are photographs of the Operation Pedro Pan children, news-paper clippings related to the program and the children of Pedro Pan, andarticles and convention papers written by Monsignor Walsh regarding the his-tory of Pedro Pan, the programs children, and various topics of interest. Thecollection houses bound copies of Miami Voice, the Catholic diocesan news-paper of Miami, published from 1959 through the 1990s. The collection alsocontains a number of books related to Monsignor Walshs elds of interests,including material on the disciplines of sociology/social work, immigration,and the Catholic Church.

    Jorge Bolet Music Collection

    The Bolet archives provide information on the professional and personal life ofCuban-born pianist Jorge Bolet. The material cover his time with the CapeTown and Durban Symphonies in South Africa, the Long Beach Symphony, andthe Kern Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. The collection includes per-sonal correspondence, family memorabilia, and notes relating to his concerts.

    Cuban Living History Project of Miguel Gonzlez-Pando

    Miguel Gonzlez-Pando, founder and director of the Cuban Living HistoryProject, produced three documentaries: Y los quiero conocer, recounting theera of the Cuban Republic; Calle Ocho: Cuban Exiles Look at Themselves,based on the Cuban American exile community; and Ni Patria Ni Alma, whichfocuses on the Cuban American struggle to oust the Castro regime. The collec-tion consists of over 114 taped interviews that Gonzlez-Pando conductedbetween the years 1990 and 1997. Most of the interviewees, now deceased,were prominent gures in the political and intellectual life of the Cuban Re-public. A number of other items, including press articles by Miguel Gonzlez-Pando, press kits, personal photos, and posters, are included in the collection.

    Lev Marrero Collection

    Cuban historian Lev Marrero is best known for his fteen-volume survey ofthe islands history, Cuba: Economa y sociedad. Materials necessary to com-plete this study, including photo reproductions and transcriptions of documentsfrom the Archivo General de Indias in Seville, Spain, are part of the collection.Manuscripts used in the writing of La Historia de Cuba, parts 1, 2, and 3, arefound in the collection as well. Personal correspondence between 1960 and1994, photographs, and maps are also a part of the collection.

    Cuban Exile History Project

    This collection includes documents and a myriad of materials relating to theCuban exile experience. The collection includes runs of such Cuban periodi-cals as Bohemia, Carteles, and El Camagueyano; publications from the CubanAmerican National Foundation; and photographs of exiles. Correspondencebetween project director Miguel Bretos and other exiles, and publications ofthe Cuban Exile History Project are also included. The Project materials alsoinclude a Cuban Pamphlet Collection. Within this collection are a variety ofpaper series and pamphlets issues by different political movements within theisland.

    Rogelio Caparros Collection

    Cuban photographer Rogelio Caparros captured much of Cuban life on lm.The collection holds thousands of photographic proofs taken between 1957 and1963. The bulk of the collection holds images of the Cuban Revolution and anumber of photos taken in New York during Caparros tenure as a photogra-pher for the United Nations in the early 1960s. Of note among these photos arethose taken of Fidel Castro while addressing the United Nations in 1961.

    Cristbal Daz-Ayala Cuban and Latin American Popular Music Collection

    Renowned musicologist and author of Cuba Canta y Baila: Discografa dela Msica Cubana, Vol. 1, 18981925, Daz-Ayala donated approximately100,000 items that span the history of popular Cuban and other Latin music.The collection features 25,000 LPs; 14,500 78rpms; 4,500 cassettes containingradio interviews with composers and musicians; 4,000 pieces of sheet music;3,000 books; and thousands of other music-related paraphernalia.

    Florida Moving Image Archive

    The Florida Moving Image Archive is an extensive collection of moving im-ages recorded in South Florida from the 1920s through the 1990s. The archivehouses local news broadcasts, lms produced privately within South Florida,and news documentaries chronicling local reaction to events of historic signi-cance produced by local television afliates.

    Florida Room

    The Florida Room at the MiamiDade Public Library houses complete runs ofa variety of periodicals from across the state of Florida. The Florida Roomspecically emphasizes materials from the region of South Florida. The FloridaRoom also houses a small collection of literary works by Cuban Americansfrom the Miami area.

    Housed at the new Roberto C. Goizueta Pavilion on the second oor of the OttoG. Richter Library, the University of Miamis Cuban Heritage Collection(CHC) acts as a repository for an impressive collection of materials on thehistory of Cuba from discovery to the present. The collection is also home to anumber of materials related to the Cuban exile community and Cuban Ameri-cans. The CHC houses more than 50,000 books (both rare and contemporary), asubstantial number of Cuban-exile and Cuban-published periodicals, and overtwo hundred personal and corporate collections.

    The CHC is open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday toFriday. Researchers not afliated with the University of Miami (its faculty,students, and staff ) will have to obtain a visitors pass from the Richter Librarycirculation desk. All that is required to obtain a pass is a photo identication.Visiting researchers are also urged to call in advance for the CHC staff to bestassist your needs.     Toms Estrada Palma Collection, ca. 18801999

    Toms Estrada Palma, the rst elected president of the Republic of Cuba,served in ofce from 1902 to 1906. This collection, donated by Toms DouglasEstrada Palma III in 1995, includes a variety of correspondence, photographs,and other documents related to Estrada Palma and his descendants. The collec-tion also reects the relationship of the Estrada Palmas government with theUnited States.

    Tad Szulc Collection, 19841986

    Tad Szulc, the distinguished journalist and author, donated to the CHC the bulkof original research material that he utilized in the work Fidel: A CriticalPortrait. Among the items in the collection are typewritten transcripts of inter-views with Fidel Castro and eighteen of his associates in the Cuban govern-ment. The interviews all took place in Cuba between the years 1984 and 1985.

    Polita Grau de Agero Collection

    Polita Grau, the former rst lady of Cuba, who served fourteen years in prisonfor conspiring to overthrow Fidel Castro and her role in coordinating OperationPedro Pan, donated this collection in 1993. The collection includes letters,clippings, and photographs of Polita Grau, and also clippings and photos of heruncle, the former Cuban president Ramn Grau San Martn.

    David Masnata y de Quesada Collection

    Masnata was the founder and rst secretary of the Cuban Institute of Geneal-ogy and Heraldry. The collection contains research material on Cuban andSpanish genealogy and heraldry. It is arranged in ve series: I: Gonzalo deQuesada y Arostegui Family; II: Genealogy (of Masnatas family); III: Geneal-ogy related to other European countries; IV: Jos Mart (contains materialsrelated to the Cuban poet); and V: David Masmata y de Quesada Papers (con-tains manuscripts of two of his unpublished works The Founders of the CubanRepublic and Hierarchy of the War of 68).

    Cordovs and Bolaos Families Collection, 18781999

    The Cordovs and Bolaos families were involved in Cubas Wars of Indepen-dence against Spain. The collection, donated by Julio Mestre, contains lettersand documents from Cubas Wars of Independence. The remainder of the col-lection includes clippings, documents, and photographs regarding the Bay ofPigs invasion, with which the donor was involved.

    The Truth about Cuba Committee Inc. Records

    The collection houses the ofcial records of the organization, Truth about CubaCommittee, Inc. (TACC), established to publish information regarding Cubaand its role in promoting communism throughout Latin America. The collec-tion includes over 390,000 pages of testimony, membership records, photo-graphs, clippings, correspondence, and visual and audio recordings from 1961to 1975.

    Alberto Arredondo Papers, 19291975

    The collection consists primarily of economic reports prepared by Arredondo,a Cuban economist. The papers are divided into four series. Series I is com-posed of biographical information regarding Arredondo. Series II and III con-tains reports written for the Symposium Nacional de Recursos Naturales deCuba, the Consejo Nacional de Economa de Cuba, and the Confederacin deTrabajadores de Cuba (CTC). Series IV holds material related to issues ofparticular interest to Arredondo, including Cuban tariffs, tobacco, and employ-ment and salaries.

    Cuba: Capitana General Collection, 18511898

    Valeriano Weyler and Ramn Blanco were both Captain Generals of the Islandof Cuba. The collection is composed of bandos or edicts, Reales Ordenes,and ofcial forms (18961898) published during both Valeriano Weyler andRamn Blancos tenures.

    Lyceum and Lawn Tennis Club Collection

    The Cuban womens organization, the Lyceum and Lawn Tennis Club, aimedto promote womens issues, social welfare, and womens athletics. After beingshut down by the Castro government in the late 1960s, several members con-tinued meeting in exile in Miami, led by Mara Luisa Guerrero. The collectionincludes these members memorabilia, photographs, newsletters, and year-books.

    Manuel R. Bustamante Photograph Collection

    The collection is composed primarily of photographs taken in Cuba betweenthe early 1900s and the 1990s. The collection also consists of materials relatedto Bustamantes personal experiences.

    Enrique Labrador Ruiz Collection, 19331991

    Enrique Labrador Ruiz, a Cuban author and journalist, was exiled from Cuba in1976. During his years of exile, Labrador Ruiz wrote for many literary journalsand newspapers. The collection consists of his manuscripts, correspondence,and newspaper clippings.

    Gerardo Machado y Morales Collection, 18731994

    Gerardo Machado y Morales was the fth president of the Republic of Cuba,from 1925 to 1933. Due to extreme opposition and popular unrest, Machadowas forced into exile in 1933. The collection contains correspondence, legaldocuments, and papers and photographs that chronicle his life in exile.
