340 HIGH STREET
Welcome. This is the 16th edition of 340 HIGH STREET—the annual publication produced by the students of the Visual Arts Center of Tidewater Community College. It is a showcase for the best of everything created at the VAC during the past year. For nearly two decades we have welcomed students to join a unique family of artists who create works of art that are informative, thought provoking, and interesting. Students are trained to be outstanding professionals and are guided as they learn the skills and master the techniques of the visual arts. Students learn how to think critically, to use the tools of fine art and design, and to channel their creative energies to produce works of art that convey messages filled with meaning and emotion. In order to show the world the spirit of the Visual Arts Center and show off the skills and talents of our students, each year they submit their best work. Then, a team of students designs, lays out and prepares for printing this book. This is the 2014 edition of 340 High Street. We hope you will enjoy.

“Ideas must be put to the test.
That’s why we make things—
otherwise they would be no
more than ideas. There is often
a huge difference between an
idea and its realization. I’ve
had what I thought were great
ideas that just didn’t work.”
Andy Goldsworthy

“I used to think
that I was just crafty,
and made things that
helped define me or
express my moods.
But then I realized
that those creations
are what I needed
to do as sure as I
needed to breathe.
That is when I realized
I was an artist.”

is an art of observation.
It’s about finding something
interesting in an ordinary place.
I’ve found it has little to do

and everything to do with
the way you see them.”
