MYNA MAJORS
MOVE IT – DON’T LOSE IT!
By Hazel Rosetta Smith
She hails from the city known for its blues, Memphis, Tennessee, however, there is nothing blue
about Myna Majors, born in a family of three boys and two girls. At the age of six, she landed in
the buggy down Bronx and began elementary school. Higher education included Lehman College
where she studied fashion and costume design. Soon Myna’s focus turned to Black Studies,
Sociology and Early Childhood Education.
Married young with two daughters, Tiombe and Kai, she travelled to California and settled down in
San Diego. She joined the San Diego Police Force and became an EMT (Emergency Medical
Technician), and served six years, before making her way to Harlem in the early 80’s.
For nearly six years, Myna worked with at risk children at Junior High School #13 in East Harlem,
until another career interest took hold at the New York State Division of Parole. Her diligence as a
parole officer led to numerous task forces including narcotics and ultimately to become the
Supervising Parole Officer, specializing in the anti-gang unit. Myna travelled across the nation
representing parole task forces in educating ways to identify gang activities in communities for nine
years, retiring in 2007.
With time on her hands, she went back to dancing, her first love in college. She studied with The
Chuck Davis African Dance Company and jazz with the African American Dance Ensemble.
Myna studied Yoga at the Harlem Y and eventually became a Yoga certified Instructor. She was
invited by a friend to a quilting class at Kennedy Center. Though she was too young at the time to
become a member, she agreed to become a substitute teacher for the Tai Chi class when its instructor
took ill. The rest is history!
With her enthusiasm and knowledge of movement, opportunities opened at Kennedy to teach Yoga,
Zumba and “Stay Well” aerobics for cardio, flexibility, balance and strength. In addition, she teaches
chair exercise at the Beatrice Lewis Senior Center, meditation classes at the St. Nicholas Senior
Center and at the ARK Center at 140th Street.
Myna is a track coach for the New York Road Runners and a fifteen-year member of the prominent
dance team WNBA NEW YORK LIBERTY TIMELESS TORCHES, performing at home
basketball games at the iconic Madison Square Garden. If you think that’s enough, don’t bet on it,
Myna is always looking for ways to stretch her mind, body and spirit. You go, Girl!
