Welcome! This year it is our pleasure to welcome you to our 34th Annual "Next Generation Herd Sire" and "Foundation Female Sale." A year ago, I wrote that "we have not lost sight of the fact that 'added value' is not just pay weight or carcass merit, but also includes the many economic benefits of superior reproduction, quality udders and mothering ability in the cow herd."

So, to that end, we have added more information on some traits we are calling cow efficiency. We realize every program is a little different and each of our customers may place a slightly different emphasis on certain traits when selecting herd bulls for their operation. We already know that our long-time customers, who retain ownership of their calves through the feedlot, have had no problem producing 1450-1475-lb. pay-weight steers with bulls that range from +90 to +110 yearling EPDs. Therefore, it is not necessary to chase extreme yearling EPDs that could increase cow size and maintenance.

We also know that we can produce 650-750-lb. weaning weights from cows that range from +18 to +30 milk EPDs. This is the range we have been striving for in our program for years, and increasing milk production above these parameters will most likely increase cow maintenance and threaten reproduction rates in the cow herd, depending on feed resources -- and feed resources cost money. We have always made the milk EPD available and we are adding three more EPDs under the umbrella of cow efficiency.

The first is CEM (calving ease maternal). This may be one of the most important cow herd production EPDs. The more calving ease a bull's daughters express as first-calf heifers, the more likely they are to breed back on time and stay in the herd for a lifetime of production. The second is HP (heifer pregnancy), which is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire's daughters becoming pregnant as virgin heifers during a normal breeding season. The third EPD we have added is maternal weight. Each producer needs to determine where mature weight and cow size fit in their environment. We know that as maternal weight increases, cow maintenance cost will most likely increase as well. For commercial beef production, staying away from the extremes on both ends is probably a good place to be.

As always, you can expect the same superior EPDs for carcass merit and feedlot performance. 90% of the 157 bull and heifer lots in this offering have a marbling EPD in the top half of the breed and 97.5% have a $G in the top half of the breed.

All of the bulls in this offering have higher accuracy EPDs that are enhanced by ultrasound and genomics through GeneSeek. The genomic data continues to verify the many years of work we put into carcass testing and selection for convenience traits in our program. Selection for Maternal Efficiency in Beef Cattle

Cow efficiency is a topic often discussed, but rarely agreed upon. It can be defined many ways, but is recognized as universally important. A very small mature cow isn't inherently efficient if she weans a small calf and some big cows could never raise a calf heavy enough to pay their feed costs. Fertility, inherent feed efficiency and adaptation to the production environment are key components of cow efficiency.

Cow efficiency starts with early puberty and early age at first calving. Females that have their first calf early in the calving season have a greater likelihood of breeding back for their second and subsequent calves. The extra days they have before the end of the breeding season, compared to their later calving contemporaries, provides an advantage in pregnancy rate that often carries on throughout their productive life. Therefore, heifer pregnancy (HP) and maternal calving ease (CEM) are traits that we can use to create more efficient cows with greater longevity. Maintenance costs in the cow herd are greatly impacted by cow size and milk production. One can utilize the (milk) EPD and mature cow weight (MW) to regulate both extremes in cow maintenance requirements.

An Angus $Value that focuses on cow efficiency is $W, Weaned Calf Value. For cow/calf operators that raise their own replacement heifers and sell the remaining calves at weaning, $W identifies animals with a more profitable combination of traits affecting efficiency on the ranch. Traits included in $W are calving ease, weaning weight, milk and mature cow weight. High $W bulls have high weaning weight EPD's, but more favorable calving ease and more moderate mature cow size genetics. Milk is considered both a revenue source and a cost in $W, because heavier milking cows wean heavier calves, but have higher cow feed costs. Prices for weaned calves and feed are updated annually, using a three-year rolling historic average, and differences in bulls' $W values predict profit differences per calf sired.

The beef industry has never had such powerful tools to select for both production and product efficiency, nor had greater economic incentives to invest in genetics with greater profit potential on the ranch, in the feedyard and on the rail.

GeneSeek is an industry leader in analyzing the genomic makeup of an animal for the presence of genetic markers that enhance that individual’s ability to produce progeny with increased economic merit.

database. To be eligible, calves must be sired by registered Angus bulls, born on the ranch of origin, and have calving or breeding records to document group age.

Research shows that known Angus steers and heifers bring more than non-Angus contemporaries. Under the AngusSource program, the AAA offers marketing support via a weekly email to more than 600 potential buyers listing enrolled calves for sale. Once enrollment is complete, producers have the option to add sale date, vaccination information and more to the AngusSource or AngusSource Genetic Marketing Document. Certified Angus Beef (CAB)– Grid Premiums for CAB set new records in 2015, reaching a cumulative $550 million over the past 20 years. A survey of CAB-licensed packers Cargill, JBS-USA, National and Tyson showed they paid a record $51.8 million in grid premiums in 2015. The annual 3.6 million cattle accepted for CAB now account for 16% of all North American fed beef. USDA reported the highest packer premium ever in Nov. 2015 at $10/cwt., and the highest average premium for CAB in Jan. 2016. It's all

driven by product demand, as the premiums match CAB's advantage over the Choice cutout value. In a load of 100% Choice cattle that make 60% CAB, the brand premium is three to four times more than the Choice portion.

Since the first few head in 1978, right up through 2015, 53 million cattle were accepted for CAB and purchased for $65.5 billion – 46% of that in the past five years. That's a lot of money, but it still does not account for the growing category of CAB Prime, for which grid marketers could typically find an extra $20/cwt. in 2015. The 217,000 Prime cattle that fed into the CAB supply chain in 2015, at the average 868-pound carcass weight, add another $37.7 million in related premiums.

U.S. Premium Beef, LLC– U.S. Premium Beef (USPB) is the nation’s first successful, large-scale producer-owned beef marketing company. Since beginning operations in December 1997, USPB has processed more than 12.4 million head of cattle. The average premium above the cash market in fiscal year 2015 was $49.42 per head. This sire group is proving to be the kind that pushes many of the right buttons for superior economic beef production. We have used this bull on virgin heifers and his calves are born with great ease and vigor. His sons gain with the best of them on test and have proved to be among the highest marbling of the sire groups at ultrasound time. We are now calving his first daughters and they are superb mothers with picture-perfect udders. We sold his first nine sons in our 2015 sale and they were extremely well received by top purebred and commercial cowmen from Nebraska, Texas, Wyoming and North Carolina. They were all out of first calf heifers and included the 3rd top selling bull at $27,500 to Pass Creek Angus, Wyola, Mont.

It was a privilege to participate with this panel at the 2015 AAA Convention to discuss the value and future of Genomics in our business. Pictured left to right are: Dr. Ronnie Green, Dr. Mike Bishop, Brian McCulloh, Bill Rishel and Dr. Dan Moser.

Barb and I are strong supporters of the American Angus Association's Junior Angus programs. In 2006 we donated B/R Ruby of Tiffany 4214 to the Angus Foundation as the featured heifer at the National Western. We were thrilled to have her sell for a record $250,000 and that had a huge impact on Junior Angus programs. We are also excited to be a part of the "16 for 16" effort with breeders from Nebraska and South Dakota donating proceeds from the Lot 16 bull in our sales to support the 2016 National Junior Angus Show in Grand Island, Nebraska.

We wanted to set some space aside in this catalog to pay tribute to one of the greatest breeding bulls that we produced and that we used. Born 17 years ago in 1999, he was impressive from Day One. His sire was our top-selling bull in 1998 at $22,000. "727" was the first calf from B/R Ruby of Tiffany 5113, a full sister to none other than B/R New Design 323. The second calf from "5113" was B/R Ruby of Tiffany 8250, the dam of B/R Ambush 28. Later in life, "5113" produced HF B/R Ruby of Tiffany 1144, who has had a phenomenal influence on our program from top-selling bulls to generations of great females. The dam of "928," B/R Blackcap Empress 558 has her own legendary record. Her second calf was B/R Blackcap Empress 8183 and she produced B/R Blackcap Empress 127, the dam of "Genesis" and B/R Magnum 399. "928" was the third calf from Empress 558. Later on, "558" produced B/R Blackcap Empress 1104, who became one of the highest-dollar herd bull-producing females in the history of our program. "558" produced one other history-making female, B/R Blackcap Empress 1126, the full sister to "928" himself. When I tell you that "1126" is the third cow in the pedigree of TEX Demand 2791, you now know part of the reason we joined forces to pay $60,000 for this impressive young sire. To top off this potent cow power in the pedigree of "928," look no further than his grandam, who is the legendary mother of B/R New Design 036. The progeny by "928" are some of the longest-bodied cattle that we have experienced. They grow and perform at an exceptional level in the feedlot and on the rail. He excels in feed efficiency traits, docility, heifer pregnancy, tenderness and $EN, and 17 years after his birth ranks in the top 1% of the Angus breed for $B. Fortunately, we retained lots of semen and we have started to use his superior genetics back in the program. Calves on the ground -- Fall of 2015 and Spring of 2016. His powerful influence of economic value continues.
