The short answer: Of course it will come to an end. All things come to an end and the earth is no exception. Science tells us that the universe has been around for more than 14 billion years and over that span of time many planets and stars have come and gone. So, why am I asking a question with such an obvious answer? For two primary reasons: 1)Some people act as if they have all the time in the world to truly grow up and get their act together; and 2)As the liturgical year draws to a close, Jesus draws to our attention that he is coming again and at that time the world will end. The real problem is that we don’t know when the world will end and that only God the Father knows the day and the hour. But all of us should know that while the world may go on for millions of more years, our life span is measured much more narrowly. We are not destined to live forever on earth, but those who eagerly await the Lord’s second coming are destined to live forever with him in the kingdom of God. That is the promise which Christ himself has made to those who choose to be his faithful disciples. We all know that we are far from perfect and as a result many are afraid that they may not measure up when it comes to giving an account of ourselves before the throne of Grace. But there’s a way to overcome that fear: Invite Jesus to draw closer to us so that we can experience what it means to be a brother or sister to the King of the Universe. That invitation involves risking that we might actually be able to grow in our love for him and for our neighbor if we rely on the help of the Holy Spirit rather than banking on our own weak wills. This weekend some 70 or more of our participants in ALPHA were given an opportunity to consider who that Holy Spirit is, what he actually does, and how they can be filled with the fire of God’s love. But they asked to be so filled and we know that Jesus promised that the Father will pour the Holy Spirit out on those who ask him. How will anyone know the consequences of those prayers? Jesus put it very simply: People will know that you are my disciples by your love for one another. So, the truth is we don’t have to worry about the end of the world, nor even how long our life span may be. We just need to trust in the Lord, seek the gift of the Holy Spirit, and receive the grace that will save us from all our sins. Come, Lord Jesus!

The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge though is to live faithfully now. When we live in conformity to the Word, hearing Jesus’ words and living them out, the future holds no fear for us.
As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul envelope, know that you are hearing the words of Jesus and living them out.

IS THANKSGIVING DAY A HOLY DAY?
Since the very word Eucharist means to Give Thanks, Catholic Christians get to celebrate Thanksgiving each and every time we gather for Mass. On Thanksgiving Day we are used to gathering around a table of plenty. But isn’t the real Table of Plenty to be found in the church?
For the last many years, we have been encouraging our most faithful parishioners to participate in the Eucharist on Thanksgiving Eve or Day. Each year, the numbers increase as more and more people realize that while Thanksgiving Day in not a holyday of obligation, it is a Holy Day of Opportunity for truly grateful Catholics.
In place of the homily at these Masses, everyone who chooses to may come and offer a short thanksgiving.
Everyone is also invited to bake or purchase a special loaf of bread that is blessed after Communion and is exchanged afterwards.

SO WHAT EXACTLY IS
ADVENT ABOUT?
John the Baptizer boldly calling for repentance.
Mary waiting in joyful hope for the birth of her very special baby.
All of us waiting in joyful hope for the second coming of Jesus.
Making efforts to not let the secular shopping feast of Xmas overpower the celebration of Christ’s birth.
This is huge challenge for parents since public schools focus on the winter holiday and its long vacation.
Advent devotions in the home including the lighting of an Advent Wreath accompanied by prayers could at least give families food for thought.
Encouraging children to take one of the tags on the Giving Tree could reinforce the importance of love and service for those waiting for the celebration of our Savior’s birth..
Prayer cards for the lighting of the Advent wreath and other blessings for the home will be on the table in the Commons.
WILL YOU BE AMONG THOSE
