August 15th, 2017 Highlights from the last meeting

Back to regular meeting we had a very busy night, starting with our Four-WayTestlead by Wing-See. Visitors and guests were introduced by our good SergeantDavid. Then President Moto helped Marriott to advertise their moon cakes with a very special prize for RCS members and friends: RMB140 instead of normal market price RMB288.Few announcemtents followed by s tarting with the sad memory to PI PE Sam F. Owori who left us too early. For his position Barry Rassin has been selected and our Pres ident Moto-San told us which his vision is and how he wants to strengthen Rotary image to attract more people to become members and do more good in the world. Moto-San then ca lled for helpers for Expat Show (Sept. 8-10): we need helpers for Thursday booth set-up, and helpers for Saturday & Sunday. Don’t forget to offer your support and contact Thilo for more information i f you need.Tracy announced again our 8/29 fellowship dinner at the Moon’s (RSVP via WeChat or ClearCut by August 22)Moto’San presented InteRota Taipei (Rotaract World Conference 2017/ Sept. 2-6), RSVP please contact [email protected] announced the night was going to be very busy and we could not miss a very important ceremony: Pres ident Moto granted the Honorary Member certificate to Herbert Lau. You probably heard about Herbert in several occasion: Herbert is our Rotary Historian and we had the pleasure to have him visiting us on this night to let us know about himself and our Club. He is such a precious contributors to us . Time for Frank Yih’s guest to introduce herself: Lora Huang - The Story of Mine. Lora Huang, HuaQiao Foundation Medical Officer and Scholarship awardee of SiChuan University and on her way to s tudy in John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Delaware, USA, master degree in public health, she is from JingHongsouthermost of YunNan Province on the border of Laos. Lora spoke to ChengDuClub 3 weeks ago and IPP Harley rated her the best speaker in his club. Lora ta lked briefly what she does and is highly inspired by Rotary teaching and movement. Here is our new generation to report about their “Japan Exchange Tour” . Presentation was well offered by Moto’s son Takayasu Yamane and Dian Jiao (Pres ident of Nanmo Interact Club) who told us about the meetings, learning and communicating. The presentation has been very involving and i f yo u want to know more you can read next page article by our President.Saddle was taken by David Smith, supported no less than by President Moto!Incredible but true we were still in perfect timing and here comes Adam’s waited speech about Shanghai International District Index 2017, which is right to the interest of all participants. Want to know which is the most expensive district in Shanghai? Whoever missed the interesting report will find Adam’s presentation in RCS WeChat group Rotarians and Friends. To test participants’ China experience, Adam played a game similar to last year one. He started with most popular places in China (e.g. Suzhou) and dis tricts in Shanghai (e.g. Huangpu). When the mentioned places you did not visit in the past 5 years you had to sit down. Surprising i s, when XI’an was ca l led, only four remained standing, when Shenzhen finally ca lled, all sat down but not David.Adam received many questions afterwards and requests e.g. China Rotary Index, Charity Clubs Index would be very much welcomed .

Moto San gave a toast – cheers for the new generations.

Report of 2nd Interact Exchange Tour to Japan - Summer 2017

Wed, Aug. 2nd Visiting Disabled People’s home for sport exchange

Thu, Aug. 3rd Tokyo Shanghai

17 Interactors from Shanghai and Chengdu visited Japan for the exchange tour during the summer vacation, accompanied by 3 adults, led by Pres ident Moto.It was the 2nd trip of this kind after 2 years ago. The biggest difference from the 1st trip was that both the Conference and the trip were mainly planned and managed by the Interactors.Interactors in China learned from the Japanese conference 2 years ago as observers and successfully held the 1 st District Interact Conference in Shanghai on April 3rd

This time, we were invited to make reports of Interact activi ties in China and introduction of the Shanghai culture to the audience. Al l the slides and attractions including violin solo of “Shanghai Tan” and Shanghai Dialect practice were planned and jointly performed by SHSID and Nanmo Interactors. The Japanese organizer told me after the event that the China team was the best and Japanese Interactors should learn from us . We learned from Japan two years ago, and now we gave back to Japan by sharing our experience. Isn’t this a very good model of the purpos e of Interact- to provide opportunity for young people to work together in a world fellowship dedicated to service and international understanding? The team visited two different local Disabled People’s homes during this short trip. At the fi rst one, we showed music and dance performances. The audience was intellectually disabled with heavy level. When we discussed about the plan one week before the trip at Frank Yih’s office, we were afraid whether we could do any meaningful communication with them. But the students brought ideas and talents together and finally we could remove the barrier between the disabled and normal people in the room.At the second one, we participated in a sport exchange event with intellectually disabled people together with local middle s chool student volunteers. All our members were a llocated to teams paired with disabled people and joined the sport games together. We could learn how to help and how to respect people who have difficulty in moving and communication.A Japanese care manager admired to see one of our Chinese students helped wipe saliva of her partner quite naturally. He said that not so many Japanese volunteers can do that. Pampered Chinese kids are generally infamous for selfishness due to the one child policy. Bu t our Interactors were proved to be different. It was a trip full of fun and learning.
