COSTS OF THE JOSHUA RESEARCH PROJECT

Budget and Costs

This project had many hidden costs such as missionary salaries, travel, existing

office space, secretarial help, phone calls, and use of office equipment. The duration of

the intensive project lasted approximately 13 months. This researcher spent nearly 40%

of his time on the project for 18 months. The following chart approximates time invested

by IMB and SEPAL personnel.

SEPAL and the Alianza Evangélica Launch a Sociological Study of theGuatemalan Church

Guatemala, 21 May 2001 . Early in the year 2000, several evangelical denominationsvoiced a concern for an accurate study of the Church in Guatemala. The evangelicalchurch has grown immensely in Guatemala in the past 10 years, but there have beenconflicting reports as to how large and healthy the evangelical church is. Some groupsclaim that the evangelical church consists of 50% of the population, whereas othersreport that the evangelical Church consists of 25% of the population. Many of thereports are based upon conjecture.

The purpose of the Joshua Project is to thoroughly investigate the state of the Church inGuatemala, both Catholic and Evangelical. The project is spearheaded by the EquipoSEPAL and has the backing and cooperation of the Alianza Evangélica. The projectdirector is Roger Grossmann (B.S Chemistry, M.Div., M.A. Anthropology) The projectalso has the assistance of Dr. Edward Buchanan of Southeastern Theological Seminary,Wake Forest, North Carolina, U.S.A., who is the director of the department of ChristianEducation and has expertise in the area of statistics and theological education. Dr.Samuel Bouchillon of Chicago, Ill, U.S.A., a biomedical researcher in the area ofdemographics and statistics, aids with data collection and processing. Other keymembers of the study include Kory Eller and Abner Rivera.

Although the study is primarily concerned with the state of the evangelical church, wewill learn about the condition of the Catholic Church, since the study measures attitudes,beliefs, and ethics of the adherents of all Christian groups. We will also measure thelevel of syncretism within the Church. Further, we will measure the level of literacy inthe general population and compare it to the Evangelical population. As we examine thequality and quantity of the evangelical church, along with her problems, we will share thedata with all major denominations so that they can take steps to strengthen the church.This study will serve as a tremendous cohesive factor within the entire evangelicalcommunity of Guatemala.

We will learn from the successes of the past and build upon them, learning from theweaknesses of evangelical church, and making recommendations to each denominationon ways to improve and deepen their ministries.

Some of the information that we will obtain from this study will be the following:

1. Overall percentage of evangelicals, Catholics and non-affiliated withinGuatemala.

2. Concentration and locations of the areas of where there is very little Christianwitness.

3. Factors which in the past led to rapid expansion of the church within certaindenominations.

4. Level and effectiveness of training and discipleship within the churches.

5. Level of syncretism within specific church denominations and geographicalareas.

6. The general level of training of pastors and leaders within all evangelicalgroups.

7. Level of literacy of laity and leaders within all denominations. (Andcorrelations of illiteracy to standards of Christian living.)

8. Current and projected growth rates of evangelicals in comparison to thepopulation.

9. Current attrition rates and factors that lead to loss of members.10. Level of missions and evangelism within each denomination.11. Identify and understand ministry areas that are particularly strong and

effective within various denominations.

Methodology:

In November of 2000, we entered into Comitancillo and two areas of Guatemala City tocomplete three pilot projects. Lessons learned from these projects are applied to thelarge survey.The data collection will contain three distinct information gathering tools:1. The general population survey

a. Areas of study. This will be administered to 19,500 individuals. The Capitaland the Interior will be treated distinctly. In the Capital, random surveys will be taken inareas that represent the cross section of the population. This includes a telephonesurvey of the upper class, and personal surveys of established communities of middleclass, middle lower class, lower classes, asentamientos, and new colonias of the middleand upper lower classes. In the Interior we have taken a random stratified sampling ofthe municipios assuring that 20% are urban and 80% rural. All major Indian groups arerepresented in the sampling, as we have sampled areas in the heart of specific Indianlanguage groups. We have sampled 46 municipios which represent all of theDepartments in Guatemala. In the interior, we are cautious to take proportionalsampling from the municipalidad as well as random aldeas and caserios. Within themunicipalidades, we sampled from established areas, the edge of town and new areasin order to get a good cross section of the local population.

b. Nature of survey. The survey itself contains typical demographic questionsabout race, age, gender, literacy, type of work, etc. In addition, we ask churchaffiliation, and frequency of participation. The survey also contains 40 questions whichtreat areas such as basic evangelical doctrine, cardinal Catholic doctrine, ethics,superstitions, Mayan beliefs, morals and attitudes about the church. The preparation ofthis part of the survey received input from members of the Alianza Evangélica.

c. Data collection. Trained survey teams were sent out in mid-November of 2000and completed the last data collection as of late April, 2001. Teams were monitoredweekly as their work was evaluated. Spot checks by supervisors were made in workareas each week to assure the integrity of data collection.

d. Processing of the data. Original survey forms were sent to the USA to bescanned into a database. The electronic data was then compared twice with the hardcopies of the surveys. Precision of data entry will be audited by the typical 5% audit thatstudies of this nature require.

The expected margin of error of this part of the study will be +- 0.5%

2. Pastoral surveyThe pastoral study is being administered randomly to 1000 evangelical pastors, with anexpected completion date of September, 2001. This part of the study was designed tounderstand some of the nature of the evangelical church. General information about thelocal church is being gathered in regards to: age of the church, income, language ofworship, etc. Other information about the pastor will be gathered such as: educationallevel and preparation, experience level, income, etc. One of more significant parts ofthe study will be the perceived needs and educational needs of the pastors. Our desireis to share this information with the appropriate denominational leaders in order to betterprepare the pastors.

3. Denominational leader InterviewsWe are interviewing leaders of the fastest growing or major denominations. We realizethat God has greatly blessed the Church and that each group has its specialty of work.For example, some denominations are strong in Indian work, others in urban work,others with the lower classes, and other with the upper class. Our goal is to makeknown strategies and reasons why certain groups have been successful so this can beshared with the entire church.

Conclusion: This study is the most comprehensive and carefully controlled study about the Churchthat has ever been done in Meso-America. The findings will be reported withoutinterpretation and with total objectivity. Currently, data collection continues and we arein the phase of data entry and verification. We anticipate we will have preliminaryresults by mid-July, 2001, with full results including values and the pastoral study to bereleased in mid-November, 2001. Our desire is that the church would use thisinvestigation to take a hard look at herself, rejoicing in Her victories and building upareas that need attention.
