The remaining intact ancient for-ests are distributed in 7 regions inthe world. These forests not onlyhouse around 2/3 of the world'sland-based species of plants andanimals and they are also homesto millions of forest people.Greenpeace has been devoting our-selves to push forward the protec-tion of ancient forests.

Amazon RainforestMuch of the Amazon rainforest fallswithin the borders of Brazil and it isthe largest remaining tropical forestin the world, which sizes as large asthe whole of the US. It is thought tobe the most diverse ecosystem onEarth, supporting around 60,000plant species, 1,000 bird species andmore than 300 mammal species. The Amazon rainforest in Brazilalone is also home to about 20 mil-lion people, these people rely on thisancient forest for their way of life.

90% of all logging in the Brazil-ian Amazon is estimated to beillegal. In recent years, the burningof large-sized rainforest for thegrowth of soya bean has acceler-ated the damage to the Amazon.

Where are the ancient forests?

Some of my friends were surprisedwhen they saw me participating inGreenpeace's "Sure Wind" windenergy promoting project.

Greenpeace is a radical organi-zation in their eyes, adopting ag-gressive means to fight for environ-mental protection. They stopnuclear weapon testing by breakinginto nuclear testing sites, block themain gates of GE food factories tostop GE food being imported intoChina. Most businessmen wouldnot like to be associated with suchactivities as some of them are po-tentially law breaking. However,I am proud to be part of it!

In fact, I don't agree to blind lawobedience. Human beings are coldnowadays. They tend to neglect theconsequences at the expense of ourenvironment for the sake of eco-nomic gain. Being a witness to theincreasingly bad air quality, pol-luted sea, more and more food con-tamination and animal extinction, how can I pretend that they don'tmatter to me and still be optimisticto the future?

Some of Greenpeace's activitiesmay have violated some laws, butthere were reasons behind. Thelaws that Greenpeace broke aredrafted by our own, but the lawsthat we human beings break arethose laid down by the Nature! When Greenpeace is being pun-ished by the legal system, we are allbeing punished by climate change!

It is a blessing for us to live onsuch a beautiful planet whereorganisms live in harmony. Thebalance of the ecosystem will bedestroyed and our sustainable en-vironment will soon disappear ifwe keep on ignoring the environ-mental problems we have createdwith our own hands. Our preciousEarth will die.

Frequent droughts and floods areevidence of global warming, whichalso contributed to the catastrophe

in New Orleans in September 2005.I realized that if we don't take ac-tions to protect our environment, the price we have to pay in the fu-ture would be unaffordable. That'swhen I started to embrace the ide-ology of Greenpeace – to force posi-tive changes through non-violentdirect action.

Oil can no longer support ourrapid economic growth. It is limitedand harms our environment. Oilwill be exhausted very soon and ifwe keep relying on it, we push our-selves to the dead end. Thereforeit's a matter of urgency to switch toclean, renewable energies, andthat's why I gave my full support tothe Greenpeace's "Sure Wind"project. No doubt, wind energy issomething worth investing in.

As a matter of fact, wind energycomes from the "Sun"! Sunlight al-ters the temperature on earth, thepressure created between hot andcold air form "Wind". There is nocost incurred on the usage of natu-ral resources and it is inexhaustible.Whenever there is sunlight, therewill be wind. It is clean, safe andshould be used on a large scale.

Most of the power companiescontinue to invest in fossil fuelsrather than wind energy because itis cheaper than building windturbines. The truth is, oil price wasrelatively cheap in the past but hasdoubled in resent years. Power gen-erated by fossil fuel is no longer asustainable option and it is time toswitch to wind! Skyrocket high oilprice makes wind energy the bestalternative and many advancedcountries have already acceleratedtheir pace on the development ofwind energy. Hong Kong, being aninternational city, is enormouslyslow in this area. I supportGreenpeace's advocacy on windenergy. Hong Kong power compa-nies should stop burning fossil fu-els and invest in wind energy now!

The African Forest of theGreat ApesIt is second in size only to the Ama-zon rainforest and is the most spe-cies rich place in Africa. The forestin the Democratic Republic ofCongo alone is home to over 1,000species of birds and more than 400species of mammals.

Overall 85% of this ancient for-est has been lost, and industrial log-ging threatens most of whatremains. Local culture and the lifeof forest-dwelling people are at risk.

Paradise forests of Asia PacificThe diverse tropical forests ofIndonesia, Papua New Guinea andthe nearby archipelagos form theParadise Forest of Asia Pacific whichis the third largest ancient rainforeston Earth. They support well over 500species of mammals and more than1,600 species of birds, not to mentionaround 30,000 species of higherplants. In New Guinea alone there aremore than 1,000 languages, one thirdof all the languages spoken on Earth.

Indonesia and Papua New Guineahave already lost around 65% of theirancient Paradise Forests.

The Snow Forests of Asian RussiaAsian Russia makes up the easternthird of the Russian Federation andcovers over 663 million hectares, more than 2/3 the size of the US.These diverse forests provide ahome to many species of plants andanimals, including the highly en-dangered Siberian (or Amur) tiger,Far Eastern leopard, the Himalayanbear, and the musk deer. Like otherforests, the Snow Forests of Asian

We are facing a growing wave ofocean extinction; our seas havereached a tipping point, with scoresof species, fish, birds and mammalsedging toward extinction. Inr e s p o n s e , G r e e n p e a c e h a slaunched our most ambitious shipexpedition ever to defend ouroceans and to call for a vast net-work of marine reserves that areneeded to protect and restore thehealth of the planets oceans.

The expedition began on No-vember 18, 2005 in Cape Town,South Africa. 2 Greenpeace ships, the Esperanza and the ArcticSunrise, left Cape Town to opposecontinued whaling in the SouthernOcean Whale Sanctuary.

Even though the ban on com-mercial whaling has been agreed, the international community hasfailed to stop the hunt. Starting withthe easiest whales to catch, vastwhaling fleets have pushed onespecies after another to the brink ofextinction. Greenpeace is headingonce more to the Sanctuary to de-fend the whales and call for an im-mediate end to the hunt. The per-secution of the great whales is atragic echo of what is happeningthroughout our oceans.

Every second breath we takecomes from the oceans - they givethe planet half of its oxygen. In re-turn we suffocate them withpollution, warm them with climatechange and empty them of fish.Countless factory ships scour anddevour all life in their path with

The Esperanza, the newest of the Greenpeace ships, has been fitted with newhi-tech equipment for the voyage, including 24/7 internet that will enable theship to interact with supporters, below the water line cameras, a RemoteOperating Vehicle camera and web cams. The crew will be blogging, podcastingand vlogging (video blogging) from the ship and producing programmes forthe newly created web-based Greenpeace TV.

destructive techniques like bottomtrawling. It is time to face facts, timeto begin defending our oceans.Only through establishing and en-forcing a vast network of marinereserves can we reverse the declineand guarantee our children's rightto inherit healthy seas.

After returning from the South-ern Ocean the Esperanza will con-tinue on its 14 month expeditionacross four of the five oceans, tohighlight their wonders and thethreats they face, all the while map-ping and demonstrating the needfor a global network of marinereserves.

During this journey, we wantyou to join us. Wherever you are inthe world, you can help defend ouroceans. Sign up as an Ocean Defendernow! www.oceans.greenpeace.org/en/ocean-defenders
