• Matched Node interconnection at VC4 signal level over STM-1o and STM-4o tributaries with redundant path protection.

• Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) allowing four separate transmission paths on a single fibre.

March 1997Release 4.2 Standard introduces the following TN-16X features:

• 34Mbit/s unprotected tributary card which maps three 34Mbit/s pleisochronous signals to a single AU4 signal.

• VC3 Drop and Continue

• Path Trace functionality at VC3 level which enables path overhead validation at the signal termination point.

• OSI (Q3) interface extended to support 34M (or VC3) equipment provisioning.

Recovery Procedures, 323-1211-545, Routine Maintenance Procedures, 323-1211-546 and Module Replacement Procedures, 323-1211-547 have been combined into a single NTP Replacement and Recovery Procedures, 323-1211-547.

October 1996Release 4.1 Standard includes the TN-16X features listed below for the preliminary release.

Nortel TN-16X documentation 1-Release information

The current release of this volume is Release 5 Standard and is defined as follows:

Documents in this suiteThere are five functionaly related groups of documents in this suite:

This basic grouping is used to help the user determine the particular Northern Telecom Publication (NTP) to reference for information. To assist in this a 10 digit code is used to identify an NTP and the last three digits of this code indicate the particular NTP and its group.

A letter following the 10 digit code is used to indicate the format:

• for B5 Wir-O bound the 10 digit number is followed by the letter ‘B’

• for A4 ring bound the 10 digit number is followed by the letter ‘A’

General safety guidelines 2-Hazardous materials

Small amounts of hazardous materials are used in the manufacture of some electrical components. The components are usually hermetically sealed and are quite safe in normal use.

Nortel Limited makes the following general recommendations for handling and disposal:

• Do not dismantle the component.

• If already broken, collect all the broken parts avoiding skin contact and inhalation. Place in a suitable container for disposal.

• Do not incinerate.

• Dispose of in accordance with local toxic waste procedures.

Optical safety aspects IntroductionThe TN-16X equipment has been designed to meet the requirements of Specification EN 60825 as if they were Class 3A laser products, under normal operating and single fault conditions.

Note: The lasers normally operate in the Class 1 band and only enter Class 3A under worst case fault conditions.

EN 60825 Class 3A requirementsThe Acceptable Emission Limits (AEL) for a wavelength of 1300 nm for Class 3A laser products is 24 mW (+13.8 dBm), reference EN60825-1 (IEC825-1, 1993).

The AEL for a wavelength of 1550 nm for Class 3A laser products is 50 mW (+17.0 dBm), reference EN60825-1 (IEC825-1, 1993).

Design featuresNormal operating conditions. Under normal operating conditions each optical fibre section is essentially a closed system permitting no human access to optical radiation.

Installation and system maintenance. There is no requirement during installation or maintenance for an operator to view a fibre end or connector whilst the associated laser is powered.

However, under these operating conditions exposure to optical radiation is possible under the following conditions:

• When an optical connection is unmated on an operational fibre section.

• When there is a break in the fibre section due to damage and when the section is operational.

As the type of optical connectors used on all the systems do not involve the use of lenses, both the above conditions can be considered to be equivalent, i.e. the safety consideration is equivalent to that for an exposed fibre end.

In these situations compliance with the Class 3A safety requirements discussed above is assured because the operating light power levels of these systems is below Class 3A limits.

Servicing. The optical units are not intended for servicing by the user. In the event of a fault, the optical units must be returned to Nortel plc for repair or replacement.

The customer should undertake to enforce certain engineering and administrative controls in the use of optical fibre systems, such as:

• Good housekeeping. Cleanliness and handling of fibres with care.

• Labelling is clearly visible at all times and not removed.

• Adequately trained staff.

• Although the TN-16X is designed to remain within Class 3A limits, it is recommended that the following safe working practices are observed:

— Never view an unterminated optical fibre or connector close to the optical transmitter, unless the optical source has been turned off. This also relates to a broken fibre in an optical cable section which should have the optical power removed. Removal of the optical power should be confirmed over a period of at least 2 minutes (due to the automatic laser shutdown and auto-restart facilities used on some systems).

— When not connected, fit all optical plugs and couplings with captive caps.

— When making a connection, do not rotate the optical plug unnecessarily.

— Clean all optical plugs and couplings by an approved method before making any optical connection.

— Procedures detailing the work to be carried out on the system, thereby minimising any risk to the maintenance staff.

System operating levels. Laser output powers are set up and controlled within ±0.5 dB of nominal during manufacture.

The optical output power level above is the mean power value which is the most onerous from the safety point of view.

Identification. Laser output warning labels are fixed to the optical cards on laser based systems. The label is positioned close to the optical connector output.

This symbol is used on optical transmitter cards to alert you to the relevant safety precautions detailed in the handbook

For a Class 3A laser product the laser products safety standard EN60825-1 requires the following caution to be given;

A caution label similar to the following may appear on some of the older TN-16X optical circuit packs.

Conclusions. As shown above the accessible optical radiations available in these systems are within the Class 3A limits for unaided viewing and at a distance greater than 100mm from a fibre end. Furthermore, the equipment design minimises access to optical radiation both physically and procedurally during all phases of operation.

Optical connector/fibre handling

The following precautions must be taken when working with single-fibre optical cables:

• Safety glasses must be worn when installing optical fibres.

• Small bits of glass fibre are almost invisible. After handling single fibre cables, hands should always be wiped clean or washed before making any contact with the eyes.

Handle optical fibres carefully and always position them in a safe and secure location during installation.

• Do not handle pieces of cut fibre with bare fingers. Use tweezers, or the sticky side of a piece of vinyl tape, to pick up and discard any loose fibre ends.

• All fibre cuttings should be placed in a plastic bottle provided for that purpose.

CAUTIONOptical connectorsClean all optical connectors by an approved method before making any optical connection.

When making an optical connection, do not rotate the optical connector unnecessarily.

When not connected, fit all optical plugs and couplings with captive caps.

CAUTIONDamage to optical fibresWhen dressing fibres, take care not to exceed the minimum bend radius (typically 35 mm) and do not overtighten tyraps used for dressing as damage may result.

When connecting connectors, ensure that the optical fibres are not trapped by the protective cover on the unit before sliding the unit in position.

WARNINGDanger from glass chipsIf there is any suspicion of a glass chip in the eye, seek medical attention at once.

Static sensitive device handling precautionsMany items of electronic equipment contain components which are sensitive to discharges of static electricity. This can induce interference in working circuits and may damage small components such as integrated circuits.

The problem occurs when static is rapidly discharged either through the equipment or via the equipment covers and adjacent metalwork.

Products containing static sensitive devices are identified by a label (barred hand symbol), as shown below.

The risk of damage and interference can be minimised by following the precautions given in the British Standard basic specification for the protection of electrostatic sensitive devices, BS CECC 00015 Part 1.

Some of these precautions are summarised below:

• Personnel must wear conductive and bonded wrist straps which conform to BS CECC 00015 Part 1 and be connected to an electrostatic discharge (ESD) bonding point or, if there is no point available, via an ESD adaptor. Do not connect to anodised metal or equipment front panels.

• Always connect the ESD wrist strap to the equipment rack ESD bonding point before removing covers, cards or connectors.

• The wrist strap must be in contact with the wearers skin.

• Cards should only be handled by the edges, avoiding contact with the components, printed circuit board tracks and connectors.

• Spare cards should be stored in their original anti-static packaging. Any cards removed from the subracks should be placed in anti-static bags.

• Servicing of cards or units should be carried out in an electrostatic protected area as defined in BS CECC 00015 Part 1. If this is not practical, use conductive floor and bench mats connected to the equipment rack ESD bonding point.

• All test equipment and trolleys should be connected to the ESD bonding point.
