Suicide Prevention

Suicide Prevention

Amn Smith was a 21-year-old, single, white male who recently returned from deployment. When he returned home, some of his friends reported to him that they had seen his girlfriend with another guy on several occasions. When he confronted her about this, his girlfriend confessed she had cheated on him. Amn Smith began drinking heavily on the night he found this out. Later that week, when his friends asked him to go out with them, he refused, which was very unusual for him. That night, Amn Smith killed himself by overdosing on alcohol and over-the-counter medication.

101 Critical Days of Summer

Motorcycle Safety

Your friend, SSgt Will Ryde just told you he bought a new motorcycle. He excitedly tells you of his plans to spend the weekend riding with his friends. You respond by commenting that you never knew he had a motorcycle license. SSgt Ryde confides to you that he doesn’t have a motorcycle endorsement yet, but says he used to ride dirt bikes when he was younger and says he can handle it. “After all, it’s the same thing.” You ask him if he has taken a safety course (you heard it was mandatory). He tells you that he would have to wait a few weeks to get into the required Motorcycle Safety (continued)

(Motorcycle Safety continued)Foundation (MSF) Course on base and doesn’t want to wait to start riding. He doesn’t want to miss the big ride this weekend and he really wants to put some serious miles on the bike with his friends. You tell him that you think the squadron safety office is supposed to “fill out some sort of paperwork” to let the Commander know he rides. He comments that he is really too busy and has not had time to let his supervisor or the Commander know about the motorcycle. He goes on to tell you that the safety office rep was out this week, but he will take care of the paperwork sometime next week. SSgt Will Ryde says, “Dude it isn’t that big a deal. So, stop acting like my mom.”

101 Critical Days of Summer

Water SportsYou and a group of your friends are enjoying a day at Greer’s Ferry Lake. It’s a hot day, but everyone has enjoyed relaxing at the “beach” and the swim area. One of the group, TSgt Ryan, mentions to you that he is not much of a swimmer, but he is looking forward to getting into the water to cool off. Everyone spends several hours swimming and Ryan joins in a game of Frisbee in the shallow portions of the swim area. After a few hours (and a few beers) several people suggest moving the “party” to a small island abut 100 meters from the swim area because the “beach” has become overcrowded. TSgt Ryan looks nervous and comments that they would have to cross a boating lane. Another of your friends tells him to “Relax, the boat traffic is light today and it’s only 100 meters. Besides, everyone else is okay with it.” Ryan reluctantly agrees, not wanting to get harassed.

Personal Finance

Budget & Emergency FundPaul and Chanelle are married active duty airmen living on base. They eat out for lunch everyday together because that is all they have time for and it gives them a break from their offices. They also eat meal out three to four times per week because neither one likes to cook plus both are tired when they get home from work. They enjoy having time together and feel saving or investments can be achieved later in life. Paul and Chanelle have a truck and a Volkswagen. They still have several more payments to make on the truck. They got a great deal on a 2002 Mitsubishi from a family going to England. Paul had a mechanic check it out. They are selling the VW to a coworker.(continued)

Personal Finance

(Budget & Emergency Fund continued)The couple is glad they made the decision to live on base. Paul is deploying in October. Chanelle will feel more secure and has a good support system with lots to do on base. They also enjoy the lakes and being able to take walks and ride bikes with security. The couple plans on having a baby next year and need to start looking for a bigger place. However, today Paul had a blowout on the freeway today and discovered he needed 4 new tires to replace the bald ones on his truck. He knows they do not have the money to pay for the tires so he charged them on a credit card with the intentions of paying them off later down the road. Paul doesn’t know how they can afford a bigger place and the expenses that come with having a child.

Sexual Harassment

Sexual HarassmentYou are a female, AB, newly assigned (60 days) to the Security Forces Squadron (SFS) Commander’s Support Staff. You get along fine with coworkers and like your job. A GS 9, who has been assigned to the unit for over 4 years asks you to join him for lunch at the base dining facility. You agree to his kind gesture. After returning to duty, you call to thank him for treating you to lunch. Two weeks later, the GS 9 is sending roses, making phone calls, requesting dates, and sending sexually related e-mails to you at work. Many coworkers who have seen the gifts he sent to you are now not as friendly. You continuously refuse his advances but he persists. You begin to feel very annoyed and uncomfortable whenever he frequents the orderly room. Soon you discover he is viewed as “the best thing since sliced bread” because he has won numerous awards. After talking to a female civilian assigned to another section, you discover the GS 9 exhibited the same behaviors towards her a year ago. She refuses to tell anyone because it was a horrible experience and would be her word against his.

Sexual Harassment

Discussion Questions:

1. What possible impact could the GS 9’s behavior have on coworkers and

ultimately the orderly room?

2. Should you (AB) be concerned about having someone address this situation because YOU did go to lunch with the GS 9 and later called

him?

3. As the AB, what course of action, if any, would YOU take to address this situation? Who else might the AB talk to on base? Explain your rationale.

4. What do you think the best outcome would be?

Gender Bias

An airman is the only male working in the Base Information Transfer Center (BITC). He has always been a well-rounded, stellar performer, involved in squadron and off-base activities to include sports. He is always the first to volunteer to come in early or stay late to help get all mail out for the day. One day, while playing basketball at the Fitness Center, he falls and breaks his ankle. Suddenly, he is no longer able to perform duties of loading/unloading the mail truck or delivering mail, and is forced to perform administrative tasks behind a desk. At first, his female co-workers accept this, but as time goes on and he experiences complications with his ankle, he remains unable to help with mail deliveries. His co-workers start whispering behind his back things like: “Guys and their stupid sports”, and “just because he is a guy, he can get away with being irresponsible”. The whispers become louder and the comments start getting out of control. He is feeling uncomfortable, and doesn’t even want to come to work in the mornings. He finally approaches his supervisor (also a female), and she responds by telling him he needs to grow a thicker skin, and the comments are just harmless. With this, he does not know what to do next, or where to turn to get this to stop.

Gender Bias

Discussion Questions

1. Is this an example of unlawful discrimination? If so, on what basis?

2. What is the recommended course of action for the airman to get his concerns addressed?

3. What is the impact of this behavior on the male airman? What is

the impact of this behavior of the workcenter/mission?

4. What role does the supervisor have? What should her response have been?
